The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto
The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto: A Novel | Mitch Albom
103 posts | 101 read | 4 reading | 71 to read
Mitch Albom creates his most unforgettable fictional characterFrankie Presto, the greatest guitarist to ever walk the earthin this magical novel about the bands we join in life and the power of talent to change our lives. An epic story of the greatest guitar player to ever live, and the six lives he changed with his magical blue strings. In Alboms most sweeping novel yet, the voice of Music narrates the tale of its most beloved disciple, young Frankie Presto, a war orphan raised by a blind music teacher in a small Spanish town. At nine years old, Frankie is sent to America in the bottom of a boat. His only possession is an old guitar and six precious strings. But Frankies talent is touched by the gods, and his amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the 20th century, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, with his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Wynton Marsalis and even KISS. Frankie becomes a pop star himself. He makes records. He is adored. But his gift is also his burden, as he realizes, through his music, he can actually affect peoples futureswith one string turning blue whenever a life is altered. At the height of his popularity, Frankie Presto vanishes. His legend grows. Only decades later, does he reappearjust before his spectacular deathto change one last life. With its Forest Gump-like romp through the music world, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is a classic in the making. A lifelong musician himself, Mitch Albom delivers a remarkable novel, infused with the message that everyone joins a band in this life and those connections change us all.

This was a reread for me. I read it when it first came out 10 years ago and loved it. Time didn't diminish my love of this book. I had forgotten a lot of what happened so in someways it felt brand new. I would describe it as a cross between Daisy Jones and the Six and A Gentleman In Moscow. A character driven story with luscious prose. 5⭐️

I don't think I've ever read a book narrated in the 2nd person by an inanimate entity. I'm not opposed to it, but I'm not sure that it's done well. I really want to like this book. I think I might still be in a reading slump? Do I bail on this or is it worth sticking with it?

You guys, take advantage of this deal.

When my book club chose this book ages ago, I figured it would be corny. I had preconceived notions about Mitch Albom.

It is one of my top 5 favorite books.

So good.

megnews I love Albom. This is his only book I haven‘t read yet. 3y

Intrigued by music as a narrarator, I really liked this book at the start, but in the end I found Frankie's story overdramatic & completely beyond the realm of believable. It was for me a Forrest Gump story, a string of name dropping & event hopping. I didn't find it remotely magical at all.

This book is about Frankie Presto's journey to discovering himself through music. Narrated in the second person by the concept of Music itself, this story unfolds through important musical events and moments in Frankie's life. I loved this story and I would highly suggest anyone who loved “the Book Thief“ or loves music to read the book. A symbol in the book is the blue guitar strings as they detail the lives that Frankie changes with his music.

Nute This sounds like a book that I would really enjoy. Stacking! 3y

I needed an audiobook for my road trip to Carson City so I chose "The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto" even though I have already read it. I am loving the audio version with all the different voices and am remembering why I loved this story so much the first time I read it. One of my top 5 favs.

Here is a shot of Mt Shasta that I snapped this afternoon.

“Everyone joins a band in their lives. Not all of them are musical.” This story, told by the spirit of Music itself, as well as real musicians and industry legends (who actually participated in the story‘s development), is the story of the greatest musician who never was. It‘s funny, beautiful, sad, inspiring, and joyful in a way that only Albom can do. This is my book of the year.

So glad I finally read this one! Mitch Albom weaved a beautiful story of Frankie Presto‘s life from birth to death. A life filled with moments of happiness and even fame along with losses and tragedy. Parts of the story are told by famous musicians in attendance of Frankie‘s funeral. Clever writing style with lots of emotion and passion. 💜🎸 🎼 #MountTBR

I really enjoyed this one. Narrated by music itself, it tells like little puzzle pieces coming together, or perhaps more appropriately, little notes coming together to form a song. Lovely, and, despite its appearance, a quick read.

You know when you gift someone a book that was very special to you and you know is perfect for them and then they never read it. Or worse, they don't even acknowledge receiving it in the mail until you ask them. That's it...Frankie Presto...a gift to a wonderful musician friend. The other two were wonderfully received. :)
