Whiskey When We're Dry
Whiskey When We're Dry | John Larison
A gritty and lyrical American epic that follows the journey of a young woman who disguises herself as a boy and heads west - and introduces a blazing new literary voice In the spring of 1885, seventeen-year-old Jessilyn Harney finds herself orphaned and alone on her family's homestead. Desperate to fend off starvation and predatory neighbors, she cuts off her hair, binds her chest, saddles her beloved mare, and sets off across the mountains to find her outlaw brother Noah and bring him home. A talented sharpshooter herself, Jess's quest lands her in the employ of the territory's violent, capricious Governor, whose militia is also hunting Noah--dead or alive. Wrestling with her brother's outlaw identity, and haunted by questions about her own, Jess must outmaneuver those who underestimate her, ultimately becoming a hero in her own right. Told in Jess's wholly original and unforgettable voice, Whiskey When We're Dry is an epic as expansive as the West itself--at once a classic American legend and a reckoning with the myths that bely our history.

Today I heard Elton John's 'Ballad of a Well-Known Gunman' as I was driving through the brilliant foliage of Vermont on a deserted road. It brought this book immediately to mind. There is a section in the book where a gunman hides in the mountains and this was the Vermont image that I had in my mind as I read it. The book clearly has been dogging me since I finished it. I'm double-thumbs-upping it.

4.5 Stars. It‘s rare that I read westerns, but for some reason I chose to read this one. It kept me riveted from start to finish. The story of an orphan, a young woman who must pass as a man as she pursues her brother, a wanted gunman.

I liked it, but didn‘t love it. For some reason I had a difficult time staying engaged with the MC after she set out on her journey. Good writing though, I would‘t shy away from another of Larison‘s books.

Unseasonably chilly, hence the hot tea in the afternoon. I‘m trying to soak up some sun between the clouds. 🌤

Is it my imagination or have there been several stories recently told of women disguising themselves as men in the “Wild West?”

This is an incredibly good audiobook. I say that both a person that isn‘t drawn to westerns, and as a woman who is often disappointed with how male writers write female characters.

Pointing that out as this is a western, written by a white man, about an absolutely brilliant, strong, unforgettable female mixed-race character. This book is beautifully written, heartbreaking, and does not shy away from race, gender, class or sexuality themes. ⬇️

sprainedbrain I went in not knowing much, and actually had to check the author name halfway through. Jess as a character is so well-written, believable and deep. I really wish her story could go on and on. After I finished, I looked up Larimer, and I may have a bit of an author crush now. This guy can write. https://vimeo.com/331129553 4mo
sprainedbrain The audiobook is very well done. Sophie Amoss captures the language and voice of these characters and just brings them to life. Can‘t recommend it enough for audio fans who are interested in this book.

This was also my #genrebusting book for #booked2019, and it certainly did that. It is gritty and violent and set in the old west, but such a fresh take on the old westerns. I loved everything about it! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Savoring my time reading and buying flowers and daydreaming and organizing for next year before heading back to work in a couple of weeks. I‘m moving through this book slowly and deliberately, and it‘s really gotten into my bones. I don‘t read westerns nearly enough. They are always so soul-satisfying.

An epic western with an unforgettable main character. The plot itself is fairly classic, but she's what makes this stand out. Her tale is harrowing and her journey takes her far from home, and even further from the girl she once was. This is violent without dwelling on it or glorifying it, humorous in places, heart-wrenching in others. Induces cravings for whiskey and fresh air.

Excellent story of a teen girl who goes in search of her brother after he leaves home due to an altercation with their father. She travels west in her search. The story takes some unusual twists and her life certainly doesn‘t turn out as expected. Good old fashioned storytelling. 5 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Such a great book about a girl who sets out to find her older brother after their father dies leaving her unable to manage their land alone. She dresses as a boy to be able to travel safely and finds herself hired as a gunman for the Governor. Beautiful writing and filled with characters that I won‘t soon forget, I tore through this book on the plane today. Between this and Heresy 2018 may go down as the year I discover I am a fan of westerns.

Damn this is good. I don‘t usually (or ever) read westerns, but this is fantastic. Rough, gritty, stark, tragic, and real. I like that the characters are full of the diverse humanity that really made up the Old West, with all kinds of motives and honor and ideas and love and history.

4 ☆ A western setting in 1885 post Civil War this novel tells the story of Jessilyn who‘s one unforgettable female protagonist! Whiskey is a very creative + unique story about coming-of-age, gender ambiguity, and how the power of friendship + love can blur the lines of race, class, and sexuality.
Already optioned for film. If you‘re in the mood for a western this is one I‘d recommend.

I am enjoying this book because I like the main character and the writing is great. it is also making me anxious because I am worried something bad will happen to her or an animal (any animal). I know the anxiety is also part of what makes it such a good book but I don‘t know if I can take it. Is it worth it to finish it if I can‘t enjoy myself?

I saw this described as Arya Stark meets True Grit and I don't think I can do better than that. It took me a couple of chapters to get into the writing style, but once I was in, I was immersed in the West of the 1870's. Excellent writing, strong characters, and a solid plot. Westerns aren't typically my go to read, but I appreciated the craft in this one.

Just finished this gorgeous, heartbreaking book and am still trying to process it. All I can say is get your hands on a copy when it‘s published in August. Reminiscent of the best coming of age westerns, this one blows them all away. It‘s News of the World meets The Sisters Brothers meets McCabe & Mrs. Miller meets Butch Cassidy. One of the best of the year.
