"Greenwood's glowing dark ruby of a novel brilliantly transforms the true crime story that inspired Nabokov's Lolita. Shatteringly original and eloquently written....So ferociously suspenseful, I found myself holding my breath." --Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Pictures of YouCamden, NJ, 1948. When 11 year-old Sally Horner steals a notebook from the local Woolworth's, she has no way of knowing that 52 year-old Frank LaSalle, fresh out of prison, is watching her, preparing to make his move. Accosting her outside the store, Frank convinces Sally that he's an FBI agent who can have her arrested in a minute--unless she does as he says. This chilling novel traces the next two harrowing years as Frank mentally and physically assaults Sally while the two of them travel westward from Camden to San Jose, forever altering not only her life, but the lives of her family, friends, and those she meets along the way.Based on the experiences of real-life kidnapping victim Sally Horner and her captor, whose story shocked the nation and inspired Vladimir Nabokov to write his controversial and iconic Lolita, this heart-pounding story by award-winning author T. Greenwood at last gives a voice to Sally herself.

This is really well-written and the story is poignantly told, and still, it didn't wrench me out of this slump. I haven't rated anything 5 stars pretty much the whole year. I thought for sure this one would do it too. I did love the way the title/book cover is woven into the story.

This is a fictionalized account of the kidnapping and imprisonment of Sally Horner. Sally is often thought of as being the inspiration for Nabokov‘s Lolita. The innocence of Sally, and her sheer gullibility juxtaposed with the depravity of her captor is heartbreaking. While there are obvious TW for child abuse and rape, the author does not delve deeply into the actual deeds, instead focusing as it should be on the victim, and her family.

Herschelian I was intrigued to read this book when I discovered it was the fictionalised version of a true crime, and that crime greatly influenced Nabokov‘s controversial classic ‘Lolita‘. Given the distasteful and disturbing subject matter I had been slightly hesitant despite being intrigued, however the author handles the sexual content very carefully and it is not at all prurient. All in all a very well written book. Recommended. 5y

The author didnt sensationalize the rape scenes or linger longer than necessary to get the point across. But each characters perspectives seemed redundant & kept reading the same sentences over & over. I dont need the author 2 keep reminding me of things she‘s already told. Either give me more emotions, more depth, or cut out those chapters. This is a hard subject 2 approach & w/o a clear purpose from the author, I found it disappointing.

vkois88 Hmmm I'm glad I read your review, it was a freebie on NetGalley and I didn't pick up that it was about that subject (or maybe I'd blocked it out???), but now I'm not sure I want to read it 6y
Jess_Franzino I enjoyed it. Then again, I went in knowing what to expect. I already knew quite a bit about the Sally Horner case, and knew this was a fictional rendering. It was decent for a quick read, but I agree that I would have thought the characters to be a bit “flat” if I wasn‘t simply reading it as a more “expanded” version of the event. 6y
TheBookKeepers @Jess_Franzino I had no knowledge of the Sally Horner case prior to reading it, and maybe if I had done a little research I would‘ve viewed it differently. Maybe! Lol It was a quick read though!!! 6y

Shereader Reminds me of “The Fact of A Body” by Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich, which I recently finished. Pedophilia is the focus. Beyond striking the chord that as a society we are hellishly terrible on how we handle pedophilia, I couldn‘t pull anything more from the text (i.e. so what do we do?). I know not always the point, but I‘d like to read something that does engage that question thoughtfully. Any recs Littins? P.S.: pretty kitty, looks like mine! 😸 (edited) 6y
TheBookKeepers This book was hard to read. And I too kept thinking, what‘s the point? Why fictionalize such a horrific event...hoping for some type of redemption or central message so I kept reading. But after finishing (literally moments ago) I find myself speechless. I don‘t think this is a book I‘d recommend. @Shereader 6y
Shereader Thanks for letting me know that @TheBookKeepers. I think so many books (and readers) get stuck in that shock and disbelief on this topic, but how is that making the read/knowledge matter? I‘m stuck there too after “The Fact of a Body.” Please let me know if you read something that builds traction in the conversation. (Also, please keep the cat pics coming too!) 6y

A work of fiction based on the Sally Horner kidnapping .Any book like this is a gut punch, I like that it is told from different points of view, not only how it effects family, but also the chance encounters with people met along the way.Buzz of course , there is a nonfiction book soon out about Horner and the questions of how the real case influenced Lolita. When I recommend a Nabokov, it‘s always Transparent Things.

Tragic and heart-wrenching. Based on the experiences of real-life kidnapping victim, Sally Horner, and her captor. While this book isn't a real true crime book, I appreciated the author's speculation and fictionalized story, flipping between viewpoints, to understand how Sally's kidnapping touched family, friends, and strangers.

5 Tear-filled ☆ This is the heartbreaking story of abducted 11yr old real life Sally Horner whom the book ‘Lolita‘ was inspired from. A chilling tale starting in 1948 tracing 21mos (from NJ to Calif) of mental + sexual abuse Sally suffered at the hands of her captor. A very tough read bringing me tears + filling up my heart with sorrow. It will rip your heart to shreds while pulling you in hook, line + sinker. 💔

Cinfhen I thought this was really well done without exploiting or over sexualizing the heart of the story. That mom, though😡 6y

I only recently heard of Sally Horner, which is surprising since “Lolita” is one of my all-time favorite books, and this was the real life case that inspired Nabokov. While this book is fiction, the main events of the story actually did happen. It‘s extremely heartbreaking. However, the writer did an an amazing job of examining the emotional effect of the kidnapping from several POVs. I also must give props for the title‘s nod to “Lolita”.

I received this on #netgalley in exchange for my review. This is a fictionalization of the real-life abduction of Sally Horner in 1948. Her abductor was a serial rapist of young girls. Tough subject matter that is believed to have inspired Nabokov in his writing of “Lolita”. The title is a phrase from that book. As terrible as Sally Horner‘s ordeal was, the book seems to try too hard to make us feel bad for her and the writing is very simplistic.

Upfront. First thing - I am recommending this book. It is a well developed story about a horrible event. But it is a difficult read. Sadness, anger, depression, impatience become the readers constant companions during this reading.
I will not ruin the book for future readers by disclosing the ending. I will call the ending most satisfying and poignant. received an advance copy of this book from Netgalley. Full review at thejwordpress.wordpress.com

Fictionalization of the true crime that loosely inspired Nabokov‘s Lolita. In 1948, 11-year old Sally Horner accepted a dare by some classmates to steal a notebook from Woolworth‘s. Her crime was witnessed by Frank Lasalle, who under of the guise of an FBI agent, kidnapped Sally telling her she had to appear before a judge. Sally, confused and afraid, wound up staying with Lasalle for two years while they traveled from New Jersey to California.

#FierceFeb This is a fictional account of a true crime and real #criminal Frank La Salle who boldly kidnapped 11yr old Sally Horner in 1948; and whose story inspired Nabokov‘s Lolita. My heart was in my throat pulsating with trepidation for the first fifty pages. Gripping from page one, the sheer innocence of Sally ripped my insides to pieces. Compelling and engaging this true story was one I was not familiar with. Brilliantly told, tragic. ✨TW✨
