The book is beautifully written and flows well. The reader definitely gets a feeling for life at the dump, and although the ending has a fairy tale quality to it, I found this story to be thought provoking and uplifting. The Rent Collector is one of my favorite reads of the year.
While the writing left a little to be desired the story and the messages the book portrays are important. Learning about how the people of Cambodia live in Stung Meanchey (the dump) and how resilient they are gives you hope for society. Although there was very little about the Khmer Rouge - it is always sad to read about - especially when we see the same in other countries to this day.

Haven't been able to get much reading in lately so this book is taking a bit longer to read. Im thoroughly enjoying it though. Going to enjoy some reading this evening with a lime Vodka Soda. This heatwave could break any day now please!!

After a fun day of water play in the backyard with the kiddos it is time to read. It is a perfect evening to do some backyard reading with a cold dragonfruit tea. I'm quite enjoying The Rent Collector so far. It has captured me since the first page.

Another 3x3 grid with a 5* read - can‘t beat that. I‘m not disappointed that I don‘t always love my monthly Reese and Jenna reading assignments. They challenge me!
5* = Loved It, want non-reader IRL friends to read. I do/will own a physical copy. A+
4*= I liked it, would love to discuss. Solid B
3*=Meh, no need to discuss. Average C

This is a beautiful story, a work of fiction using real people who forged a living in the largest municipal dump, Stung Meanchey, in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It is a testament that as avid readers we are better than we might otherwise be without our stories. It is heart wrenching. It is hopeful. It is humanity. I will never forget this book.
They knew everything about literature except how to enjoy it.
Living in the largest trash dump in Cambodia, a family tries to make a better life for themselves. Although the writing was not great, the story itself was very interesting. I am conflicted on the idea that the characters are real people but the story is made up. I would rather read their true story. Despite my misgivings, it did make me ugly cry at midnight as I finished it so it ends up as a pick.

Reading a book about Cambodia while in Cambodia. Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat is a must see. Celebrated my birthday here. I love Cambodia.
#WanderingJune #Bono ♥️Love the music of U2, almost every song speaks to my soul 🎶 Tagged book is based on actual individuals living in Stung Meanchey, Cambodia‘s municipal waste dump. #WhereTheStreetsHaveNoName and yes, they live on grounds of a municipal waste dump 😭😭😭😭😭 The writing wasn‘t great but this story of resilience and hope is worth more than 5000 stars.
Grab tissues‼️‼️While the writing was uneven, this heartfelt story of resilience, hope, redemption and hidden treasures was an absolute stunner. “It doesn‘t matter where you live, but HOW you live.” Based on actual individuals living in Stung Meanchey, Cambodia‘s municipal waste dump.
#GetMovin My current read features Sang Ly a wife /mother living in Stung Meanchey, Cambodia‘s largest municipal dump. She‘s a #fighter willing to do whatever it takes to feed her family and save her ill son. It‘s a novel based on actual people, the story is an eye opener but I‘m not impressed with the writing. It‘s a short read, so I won‘t bail. Sang Ly pictured above ( what a gorgeous smile!) ✳️I‘ve finished the book & Im pleasantly surprised❣️
I wandered into an independent bookstore in Columbus, Georgia about a year ago. The man working there recommended "The Rent Collector," saying it was the best book he had read so far that year. I took his word for it and bought the book. Today I finished reading it for the second time! It is really good, and I highly recommend it to y'all. It shows how literacy can change lives and give hope.
Read it! You won't regret it.
This is the story of Sang Ly, a young mother, who is fighting to survive by picking through garbage in Cambodia's largest municipal dump. She survives by scavenging recyclable items from the trash. To complicate matters, she has a sick son and can barely afford the exorbitant cost of his medicine. I love reading stories that take place in different countries and about different cultures. I think this is the first one I have read from Cambodia.
#FallIntoBooks Three more books from my #SuperSummerBookHaul this time with #occupationintitle @RealLifeReading
I am loving this audiobook so much. I started it as part of my "exploring other cultures" reading initiative, focusing on books without a white protagonist. It's giving me Man Called Ove vibes ... I love cranky older characters who are inherently good. Beautiful story telling and wonderful premise. #notawhiteprotagonist
My #litsypartyofone was eventually joined by others but I got to enjoy a few hours of the Rent Collector on Audible and this cookie dough dip 😍
Can get sappy at times but still worth the read! Especially since books and literacy are a main theme of the book.
Next up: The Rent Collector. I've had this one recommended to me twice this past week. I feel like I've been missing out so this is on my agenda for the evening.
Definitely a pick! The set is in municipal waste dump in Cambodia. People live and work here because the dump is a better place then province for a living. The dump is always on fire, there no clean water, their homes are just three wall shacks, there is food deficiency and theirs bodies are unhealthy. But the book not about the straggles. It is about that humanity and literature can do in such place to enlight lives.
"Finding beauty in either place simply depends on where you decide to stand" -- The Rent Collector
When you find your purpose-and you will find your purpose-never let go. Peace is a product of both patience and persistence.
I just discover a treasure! The book is full of thoughts!!! I'll be post the most wonderful quotes during couples days for sure;) Quick inside story: there is a biggest municipal waste dump in Cambodia where people live and struggle. What if the gift of literacy were given to one family? "Their struggles aren't always evident. In almost every story, the fiercest battles often take place within" - The Rent Collector
A simple story about a family living in a trash dump in Cambodia. There was nothing exciting or interesting about this family.
Hero - saves a drowning child
Cures a wasting disease
Hero - lands the crippled airplane
Solves great mysteries
Hero - not the handsome actor
Who plays a hero's role
Hero - not the glamor girl
Who'd love to sell her soul
If anybody's buying....
- Nobody's Hero by Rush

I love when I get #bookmail! When I saw that this book takes place at a dump, it didn't sound too appealing. Then I looked closer and saw that though the book is a work of fiction, it's based on a real place and real people. The signed bookplate by the author and signed bookmark by the MC is a nice touch too!
This book was so good. It has the most beautiful and peaceful death scene I think I've ever read.
The end of Rent Collector will have to wait. Today, we show off @outofprint to NYC! #giftshow #javitscenter #bookswornwell #oopsummer
