Library at the Edge of the World
Library at the Edge of the World | Felicity Hayes-McCoy
November 2017 LibraryReads PickIn the bestselling tradition of Fannie Flagg and Jenny Colgan comes Felicity Hayes-McCoy's U.S. debut about a local librarian who must find a way to rebuild her community and her own life in this touching, enchanting novel set on Ireland's stunning West Coast. As she drives her mobile library van between villages of Ireland's West Coast, Hanna Casey tries not to think about a lot of things. Like the sophisticated lifestyle she abandoned after finding her English barrister husband in bed with another woman. Or that she's back in Lissbeg, the rural Irish town she walked away from in her teens, living in the back bedroom of her overbearing mother's retirement bungalow. Or, worse yet, her nagging fear that, as the local librarian and a prominent figure in the community, her failed marriage and ignominious return have made her a focus of gossip. With her teenage daughter, Jazz, off traveling the world and her relationship with her own mother growing increasingly tense, Hanna is determined to reclaim her independence by restoring a derelict cottage left to her by her great-aunt. But when the threatened closure of the Lissbeg Library puts her personal plans in jeopardy, Hanna finds herself leading a battle to restore the heart and soul of the Finfarran Peninsula's fragmented community. And she's about to discover that the neighbors she'd always kept at a distance have come to mean more to her than she ever could have imagined. Told with heart and abundant charm, The Library at the Edge of the World is a joyous story about the meaning of home and the importance of finding a place where you truly belong."Heart-warming . . . reminiscent of Maeve Binchy and Roisin Meaney."--Irish Examiner

Started slow, picked up speed, and then I couldn't put it down. The setting is the quaint village of Finfarran, filled with quirky characters. A story of going home, of starting over, of villagers coming together to support one another, and for the common good. Feel good vibes and heartwarming fellowship.

This was fairly cookie cutter divorce, sandwich generation, woman whose not where she wants to be in life, community coming together to save a cultural institution chick lit. The saving grace was the library (which was but wasn‘t a huge focus) and Irish settings.

Andrew65 Ooh, I need to read this! 2y
Crinoline_Laphroaig @Andrew65 While some complain about the main character being a Librarian that didn't like Book Clubs or people hanging about the Library she had her reasons why and in the end her character grew and opened up. As for complaints about her awful mother, well not all mothers are nice. Trust me I know. And I appreciate it when Author's don't have the unrealistic redemption of the mother. It doesn't happen in real life. 2y

I wanted to like this one more but it was just okay. I didn‘t care much about the MC or any of the other characters. The story was a bit slow too. The one thing I did like about it was the conveying of how essential a library can be to a community!

I don't usually like general fiction, but I've been surprised before. Not this time. I picked this up because it sounded like a healing story about a woman recovering from a major life change and running a mobile library. I couldn't get into the story or characters. I also just didn't understand why after a decade or two, the woman felt entitled to ask her ex for money and wasn't set up at all. POV shifts felt weird throughout too.

Thanks, @Ast_Arslan for the tag! #WonderousWednesday

1. This is tough because I often ship characters 🤔 Seyonne & Aleksander (Transformation), Calcifer & Sophie (Howl's Moving Castle), and Aster & Charlie (Hidden Witch)
2. Many! Sometimes I'll take long breaks from one, or havr several mood books.
3. A small town in Ireland I think? (I'm not really into the book so some details are lost!)

Who else wants to play?

Eggs Thanks for joining in 👏🏻🦋👍🏼 3y

The main character is the WORST public librarian! The story, once you get past the MC, is good, and shows how a library can be essential to a community (in spite of the librarian) and the way the politics of the county are described is fantastic. Lame characters and dragging story make this not worth reading the sequel. 2.5/5 stars. Don‘t read this if you are a #librarian and love the profession.

Until she finds out the library is going to be closed and sets out to save it with the help of an elderly nun, a cantankerous builder and the rest of the town.

When I began this book, I thought I was going to put it down. It seemed disjointed somehow. But I continued and I'm glad I did. I enjoyed the story. The story became more fluid as I read. Hanna is a 51 year old librarian living with her mother, she is kind of crotchety till she begins to help the town. 4 ⭐

BarbaraJean I picked this up for a friend a couple weeks ago, because it seemed to have the same vibe as The Bookshop on the Corner—glad to hear you ended up enjoying it! 5y

For #Booked2019 winter season: #Irish author accomplished! The MC frustrated me at times, but I loved the secondary characters and will probably continue with this series.

I read enough mysteries that I‘m not worried about catching up with the female detective task in another season. Meanwhile, I heard there‘s a google form I probably didn‘t fill out?

Though I was frustrated with the main character at times, overall I found this book charming. Hanna‘s life is shattered when she catches her husband with another woman. She returns home to the town where she grew up and moves in with her mom. Just when she decides to take out a loan to remodel a small home, she finds out that she may soon lose her job at the tiny community library. I love the way the library becomes the heart of the community.

I really struggled through this one... and by the end I was more skimming than reading... This has plenty of things I usually enjoy- characters who are book lovers, an Irish setting... but I couldn‘t connect with any of the characters and I just didn‘t care what was going to happen in this snail-paced book....#NotForMe (but the accompanying #AvocadoToast was delicious!!)

emilyhaldi Your toast looks fab though!!! 🤤 5y
TorieStorieS Thanks, @emilyhaldi - I cannot take any credit! My husband is the toast-master of our house!! 🤣 5y

TorieStorieS @emilyhaldi Though we live in the Chicago area, my husband‘s office is actually in LA so avocado toast is something he was excited to make after eating it there first! 😂 5y

“She told herself that a letter was nothing but words on paper. But a librarian should know better than anyone how written words, moving through time and space, could change a person‘s life.”

Any book titled Library at the Edge of the World, which begins with this paragraph is worth a read! I liked this book. It was a book of redemption, where we follow Hanna on a journey to find herself. Set in Southern Ireland, it help up the Irish charm.

Always love books with a fresh start because who doesn‘t need one? It‘s always encouraging to me to read about women who find out they are independent and strong when maybe they thought they weren‘t or didn‘t need to be.
