"Congrats to Rhiannon Navin--this is an outstanding debut."--Harlan Coben "An astonishing debut novel."--Louisa Ermelino, Publishers Weekly "One of the big debuts of next year."--Barbara Hoffert, Library Journal "A powerful exercise in empathy and perspective."--Kirkus Reviews For fans of Room and the novels of Jodi Picoult, a dazzling, tenderhearted debut about healing, family, and the exquisite wisdom of children, narrated by a six-year-old boy who reminds us that sometimes the littlest bodies hold the biggest hearts, and the quietest voices speak the loudest. Squeezed into a coat closet with his classmates and teacher, first grader Zach Taylor can hear gunshots ringing through the halls of his school. A gunman has entered the building, taking nineteen lives and irrevocably changing the very fabric of this close-knit community. While Zach's mother pursues a quest for justice against the shooter's parents, holding them responsible for their son's actions, Zach retreats into his super-secret hideout and loses himself in a world of books and art. Armed with his newfound understanding, and with the optimism and stubbornness only a child could have, Zach sets out on a captivating journey towards healing and forgiveness, determined to help the adults in his life rediscover the universal truths of love and compassion needed to pull them through their darkest hours.

I should have loved this book but for some reason I just couldn‘t connect with the parents. It‘s a ripped from the front page story about a school shooting and the aftermath. #StarTrekSummerMay #TheChild @Megabooks

8little_paws Interesting how they changed the cover. I really prefer the hardcover version. 2w
Cinfhen I don‘t think I‘ve seen that cover @8little_paws but this cover is sort of bland. 2w
Megabooks Hmmm... I have not liked the school shooting books I‘ve read so far. There was a recent kerfuffle in Indiana about teachers in multiple schools getting shot with non lethal rounds during lockdown drills! I never saw on the news if they got to why. They literally got the teachers on their knees and shot them execution style. 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ 2w

Reviewsbylola Ok, send it on my way. I‘ll give it a shot. We all know I don‘t mind reading about school shootings. I just usually go the nonfiction route. The Sandyhook one is the book that really got to me. I remember watching the documentary about it afterward and being so depressed. 2w

I almost removed it from my TBR a few times thinking that I would not like it. When I saw that my library had the audio version available with no wait I decided to give it a try and found myself tearing up within the first few minutes. Hearing the book read by a child narrator as he describes being in lock down during a school shooting and his confusion and loneliness in the aftermath as his family grieves really tore at my heart.

Very emotional read. I was able to relate with Zach so much especially because I had a bad childhood with my parents being engaged in their work and they had rarely given much attention to spend time with me. But the story is not about this part, it is about losing someone and dealing with separation.

After the horrific event that occurred on Saturday, this book about a shooting in a “safe place” was extra painful to process. Using the voice and eyes of a 6 yr old was strongly effective, but at times tiresome. I found parts of the story dragged and I was unprepared to “dislike” the parents when I should have felt only sympathy & compassion. I‘ve seen mostly 5 star reviews but this was only 3 from me. #PlaneRead

Listening to a little boy read this audiobook made it all the more difficult to get through a story about a school shooting. That being said, this was a great book. Sad subject, but great storytelling.

Well, get your tissues and your hold-me-I‘m-so-sad blanket because this will tug at your heart and squeeze out all your tears. If you loved Room by Emma Donoghue then you‘ll love this heartbreaking story about a 1st grader that survives a school shooting. The story of how his family deals with the aftermath of this destruction is just terrifying to read because, sad to say, we all know it can happen at any school these days.

LiteraryinLititz Completely agree with your review. I loved the way this was written, but it was a sob-fest for sure! 8mo

Wow. Heartbreaking and so well done. The author created a compelling and believable narrator in this 6-year-old boy who survived a school shooting. I agree with the comparisons to Room; this one also takes an impossibly hard story and tells it through the more innocent lens of a child. This is Navin‘s first novel, and I will absolutely read whatever she writes next. This is a special book, and I recommend it highly.

You guys. This was a punch in the gut, ugly cry book. It‘s raw and realistic from the perspective of a 6-year-old who survived a school shooting with fatalities. The writing is beautifully written considering the age of the narrator, random thoughts of a 6-year-old and all. I do think some of the actions and thoughts of the boy are slightly unbelievable but most were true to the narrator‘s development. 5⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was an insightful testimony to how important and wise children are and how we need to use caution when interpreting their actions. We also need to listen to them more, too, as this six-year-old narrator often offered a deeper realization of loss than many adults. It could‘ve been better edited; a few portions were repetitive. However, I enjoyed this child‘s insight enough to overlook that. Wonderful read.

Only Child is about one family‘s struggle with the emotional consequences of a school shooting. So soon after Florida, this one was both taxing to listen to as well as compelling and addicting. The narrator is first-grader Zach. As a therapist + school counselor, I thought Rhiannon Navin did justice to the emotions and grief that a child and family experience, and also explored a plethora of coping strategies so organically that I was impressed.

Only Child is about a school shooting from a six year old‘s point of view. Zach‘s story is about sorrow, and fear, and trying to explain his truth to the grown ups around him.

I thought this was well done. I got frustrated along with Zach as his parents couldn‘t understand him, or were too absorbed in their own struggles to listen.

I wish this was a little shorter, some of the middle felt draggy, but ultimately it was enjoyable. 3.5 of 5 ⭐️.

Although school shootings are very much a buzz issue at the moment, I appreciated that this novel didn‘t focus as much on why such events happen; it‘s not a politicised statement about gun control. Navin‘s novel is an exploration about how loss affects a family, and how isolating it is. The real focus is the ways we try to hurt each other, to distract from the hurt we feel ourselves. Navin uses a child narrator to great effect.
