Nowhere Girls
Nowhere Girls | Amy Reed
"A call-to-action to everyone out there who wants to fight back." --Bustle "Subversive anti-sexism--just try to put it down." --Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "Cuts straight to the core of rape culture--masterfully fierce, stirring, and deeply empowering." --Amber Smith, New York Times bestselling author of The Way I Used to Be Three misfits come together to avenge the rape of a fellow classmate and in the process trigger a change in the misogynist culture at their high school transforming the lives of everyone around them in this searing and timely story. Who are the Nowhere Girls? They're everygirl. But they start with just three: Grace Salter is the new girl in town, whose family was run out of their former community after her southern Baptist preacher mom turned into a radical liberal after falling off a horse and bumping her head. Rosina Suarez is the queer punk girl in a conservative Mexican immigrant family, who dreams of a life playing music instead of babysitting her gaggle of cousins and waitressing at her uncle's restaurant. Erin Delillo is obsessed with two things: marine biology and Star Trek: The Next Generation, but they aren't enough to distract her from her suspicion that she may in fact be an android. When Grace learns that Lucy Moynihan, the former occupant of her new home, was run out of town for having accused the popular guys at school of gang rape, she's incensed that Lucy never had justice. For their own personal reasons, Rosina and Erin feel equally deeply about Lucy's tragedy, so they form an anonymous group of girls at Prescott High to resist the sexist culture at their school, which includes boycotting sex of any kind with the male students. Told in alternating perspectives, this groundbreaking novel is an indictment of rape culture and explores with bold honesty the deepest questions about teen girls and sexuality.

The Nowhere Girls is about a group of girls who create a feminist movement in their school and fight against misogynist behavior and rape culture.

The book introduces us to three girls: one has aspergers syndrome, another is latina and lesbian, and lastly, we have the new overweight girl in school.

I simply loved this book and I will protect it with everything I‘ve got. Such an important story with a powerful message!
Rating: 5.0/5.0

It started off with only 3 dogs in bed with me tonight, now I have all 5.
Oh, the joys of dogsitting for my family.
They were giving me space earlier on in the night (as seen in the photo), but now I barely have any room. It's not comfortable. I'm losing sleep, but I hope they are at least enjoying the company.😂

blondie @Trashcanman @GrilledCheeseSamurai Thank you both for checking in. Things haven't been good, I'm not okay, but I will be. I probably won't be on much for awhile. I'd prefer not to talk about it on here, but as of today people are aware of my situation and have offered support. 2mo
Trashcanman @blondie Have you tried the national suicide hotline? I have, no joke many times. I never give me name and I don't have someone telling me all the ways I've done this to myself. It might help, please consider it. If you ever need to talk to someone I'm always here. I know we don't know each we'll be were are the same in many ways. I know you want the pain to stop and I hope it does soon. You matter and are worthwhile. 2mo
blondie @Trashcanman Thank you. I appreciate it. Unfortunately it's more to it than my mental illness, that part of it has just made it much worse. I've caused so much chaos and pain recently. I'm trying to make things better. My family called me and had a deep talk with me last night. I'm still emotional over it. I'm hoping things will start looking up after facing them last night. My heart aches, but I know it has to get better eventually. 2mo

Rape occurs frequently in h.s. & 3 girls decide enough is enough. They anonymously start a girls' group called “The Nowhere Girls“ where girls meet to talk about guys & create a manifesto with one item being girls will no longer have sex with guys. There is an online blog called “Real Men of Presscott High“ where one of the anonymous rapists brags about all of his conquests. It takes awhile for adults to do the right thing, but justice prevails.

Hi guys!
So I know I don't have that many followers here and I'm not that popular, but I would really like to try this.
March is the #internationalwomensmonth
Since it's ending, I'd like for you to recommend books with strong female characters and have a good message to send to all the women/girls around the world so we could read them all year long not just in March.
I'd like for you to comment here or create your post and tag me. ❤📖
👇more

BooksAndTea97 I'm not trying to exclude men out of this. But where I live, a lot of women tend to think they're not that good/worthy and that men are truly superior. I just want to expand my (and your) bookshelf with good books that show how strong and amazing women can be and with books that can help women struggling with their own insecurities. My recommendation is tagged. I already wrote about it previously. Now I'd really like to see yours. ❤ 8mo
Naj This is such a great idea. I'd recommend the tagged book. Great women characters and checks all the boxes you mentioned in your post. 8mo
Freespirit Women are awesome😊I can think of quite a few books with strong female characters . The tagged book, Emma by Jane Austen, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and I am reading European Travel for the Monstrous Gentlewoman 📚 8mo
AmyG The first book that popped into my head was a book I read last year, and loved. (edited) 8mo
BooksAndTea97 @Naj @Freespirit @AmyG thank you guys for your recommendations.❤❤ I have read some of those, others are now on my tbr. 😍 8mo

'In a town somewhere a girl named Lucy Moyniham knows her parents are talking to their lawyers again. She knows her rapists have been arrested and her case will finally go to trial. She knows her ghosts have been turned into news... Who knows what will actually end up happening? Who knows what justice even looks like? ... Is there even such a thing as justice? Nothing can bring back the girl Lucy was. Nothing can undo what happened.'

3% of rapist only spend a day in jail.

This story is about girls who are tired of the rape culture in their town. They band together and creat a group called The Nowhere Girls, where they can just be them and talk freely.

It took me awhile to read this book because it made me ragey. It made my stomach hurt because of the truth of how are society treats people are are sexually assaulted.

Warning: A LOT OF TRIGGERS.

On #AdventRecommends Day 6 I present to you The Nowhere Girls.

Everyone should read this book because it is so good and it deals with such important topics.
-This book shows the bad side of our society that tries to put on a perfect facade ignoring serious problems within.
-Multiple POVs.
-The characters are really well developed (and diverse) and I love them so much.

CW: rape, sexual assault,...

Do read it. You'll probably love it.

I heard it‘s compares to Moxie, which I enjoyed, although I thought it a little too white-feminist and a bit too tame.

A must read YA book in my opinion. (Trigger warning: Rape and sexual assault) I love the way the story was told by not only the 3 main characters, but there were chapters with the point of view of anonymous people as well. (I am awful at writing reviews, just trust me when i say this is SO worth reading.) ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Just read it! Girl/woman empowering, great message. Characters are very relatable. Since it‘s a YA novel, there is a bit too unrealistically perfect of an ending.

Three misfit, unpopular girls help unite all the girls at school to take a stand against rape culture, misogyny, and three serial gang rapists. 4.5⭐️

Obviously “heavy” doesn‘t begin to describe it. All the trigger warnings apply, but if you‘re able to read it, it‘s worth it if just for seeing this shit explored so well, the reality & hell of rape culture. I appreciate the author treating it right. Do wish there‘d been a better attempt at inclusion of the trans character & girls of color beside Rosina. Also the end felt a bit after school special-ish. But still powerful & important. 4/5 ⭐️

Feminism to the max, including 3 unlikely teen avengers: Rosina, a lesbian Mexican American; Erin, Star Trek-loving & on the autism spectrum; and Grace, a fat new girl in town. Their target is rape culture in their school. Excellent incorporation of additional viewpoints, providing a wide variety of attitudes towards self-image and sex. The #audiobook has a small flaw: it‘s obvious when narrator Rebekkah Ross had to stop and restart mid-chapter.

TrishB Sounds good 👍🏻 2y

Amy Reed's novel is probably one of the first YA stories I've personally come across that really delves into rape culture and its connection to the toxic online environment young men have cultivated thanks to the internet's gift of anonymity. I also really appreciate the frank discussions the girls have about sex and sexuality. It was really refreshing to just see girls open up to one another like that.
