Truly Devious
Truly Devious: A Mystery | Maureen Johnson
New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson weaves a delicate tale of murder and mystery in the first book of a striking new series, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and E. Lockhart. Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early twentieth century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. “A place,” he said, “where learning is a game.” Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym “Truly, Devious.” It became one of the great unsolved crimes of American history. True-crime aficionado Stevie Bell is set to begin her first year at Ellingham Academy, and she has an ambitious plan: She will solve this cold case. That is, she will solve the case when she gets a grip on her demanding new school life and her housemates: the inventor, the novelist, the actor, the artist, and the jokester. But something strange is happening. Truly Devious makes a surprise return, and death revisits Ellingham Academy. The past has crawled out of its grave. Someone has gotten away with murder. The two interwoven mysteries of this first book in the Truly Devious series dovetail brilliantly, and Stevie Bell will continue her relentless quest for the murderers in books two and three.

This was fun easy read. I don't read a lot of YA but i am glad i remembered i wanted to read it when i saw it on my library stacks. Stevie is selected to attend a private boarding school based on her talent of sleuthing. She plans to solve the decades old disappearance of the schools founding mistress and daughter. Then a current student is found dead and Stevie has another mystery to solve before this school keeps claiming victims. Fun 4 stars.

Checked this out from the library and am nearly finished with it. Enjoyable and a mellow read. I‘m not sure if I‘m in for a trilogy here but I‘ll probably give the second book a chance.

I was left a little confuse after finishing this book. It left a lot of unanswered question but after reading and hearing other people thoughts I know why. This book did not wrap up anything that was going on to make you as the reader to pick up the 2nd book. I felt a little bored reading this book. Even though the pace was not so bad. I might pick up book 2 just to have some of questions answered.

Do you like Sherlock Holmes and/or Hercules Poirot?
Do you like murder mysteries?
Do you like YA books?

If the answer is yes, then you need to pick this one up.
I really love it. Everything about it. The writing, the mystery, the characters... it's all really good.
Though if you love to binge read books, you might want to wait for the series to be complete, I believe it is a trilogy.

Also.. Gimme book 2!

Hestapleton I just finished Book 2 and I need Book 3 IMMEDIATELY. 4mo
BooksAndTea97 @Hestapleton that's why I need to stop myself from getting book two. I know I'll just want more. 4mo
BooksAndTea97 @Hestapleton also a question I need to ask out of curiosity. Did you have that TD poem/letter stuck in your head, or is it just me? 😂 4mo
Hestapleton @BooksAndTea97 I did! It lingers very creepily and I love it. 4mo

In the 1930s, Ellingham, a rich tycoon, opens a free school for the gifted on a secluded mountain. Shortly thereafter, his wife and child are kidnapped and the case is never solved. Decades later, Stevie, and amateur sleuth, begins at school hoping to solve the crime, but there's more going on.
I really enjoyed this read and motored through it. It kept me interested and i appreciated the author touching on the MC's battle with her mental health.

I like Nate. Nate‘s a solid investment. But then again, it‘s MoJo (would that the author and I were friends! I feel like I just gave her a nickname!). She‘s a slippery little writer. One minute, I got it 🤜🏻 we‘re good. The next, nope never had it. Just thought I did. What a lovely palate cleanser after The (equally brilliant) Priory of the Orange Tree. 4.25 solid ⭐️! Lost a little momentum around ch. 10, but she was back in the game by ch. 16.

A fun and gripping read. Quirky interesting characters and a spooky eclectic background with hints of boarding school, 1930‘s prohibition, a little bit Gatsby and lots of YA charm. My only complaint was the cliffhanger ending - eased only by the immediate Kindle purchase of the sequel. A 4 stars out of 5 for me. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

My first YA murder mystery and I really enjoyed it! Stevie Bell is obsessed with crime. When she gets accepted into an eccentric boarding school famous for a murder/kid napping in the 1930‘s she sets out to find the real culprit. then another body is discovered on campus and Stevie is determined to solve this new mystery too
