Truly Devious
Truly Devious: A Mystery | Maureen Johnson
New York Times bestselling author Maureen Johnson weaves a delicate tale of murder and mystery in the first book of a striking new series, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and E. Lockhart. Ellingham Academy is a famous private school in Vermont for the brightest thinkers, inventors, and artists. It was founded by Albert Ellingham, an early twentieth century tycoon, who wanted to make a wonderful place full of riddles, twisting pathways, and gardens. A place, he said, where learning is a game. Shortly after the school opened, his wife and daughter were kidnapped. The only real clue was a mocking riddle listing methods of murder, signed with the frightening pseudonym Truly, Devious. It became one of the great unsolved crimes of American history. True-crime aficionado Stevie Bell is set to begin her first year at Ellingham Academy, and she has an ambitious plan: She will solve this cold case. That is, she will solve the case when she gets a grip on her demanding new school life and her housemates: the inventor, the novelist, the actor, the artist, and the jokester. But something strange is happening. Truly Devious makes a surprise return, and death revisits Ellingham Academy. The past has crawled out of its grave. Someone has gotten away with murder. The two interwoven mysteries of this first book in the Truly Devious series dovetail brilliantly, and Stevie Bell will continue her relentless quest for the murderers in books two and three.

The mystery is intriguing, the setting is incredibly detailed, but the teenage characters are tedious and eye-roll-worthy. Is this how you know you've reached adulthood? It seems like every time I go for a YA, it's a tough slog.
That being said, I can absolutely see why people like the series. If the summary sounds interesting, it's probably worth a read. Be warned, I've heard the mystery doesn't wrap up in the first novel.

These books were DELIGHTFUL. I found the series from a list of books to read if you like Only Murders in the Building. My husband and I are obsessed with Only Murders, so I gave this a try. Such a great series! Stevie is a complex young detective determined to solve a cold case - and deal with her extreme anxiety and her first boyfriend. Oh, and high school.

I got this for free from the Sync audiobook program - and picked it because I didn‘t know what to choose after all the series I had started recently. Little did I know that this would be a series too 🤦🏻‍♀️ This is not the book‘s fault, though. I truly enjoyed the story - the characters, the plot, the mystery. I‘m looking forward to reading the rest of the series… and seriously considering a new Audible subscription for all those sequels.

Book 43

Truly, Devious was a library summer reading program reward book and was incredibly engaging from the get-go. It's a double-mystery set in a boarding school--a mystery from the history of the school as well as one involving the current class. Unfortunately, the mysteries aren't resolved in this first book in the series (annoying), and the book doesn't maintain its compulsive readability. Still, I will read the next novel. 3.5 ⭐s

Dark and Gloomy with Claire

I was happy to sit down and talk to Claire, a reader from the upcoming generation. She likes dark and gloomy books! Jenny also took the opportunity to read a few YA books she had not yet gotten to, and went dark and gloomy too.

What are your teens reading these days?

Lindy This conversation with a 13-year-old reader was charming. Wait Till Helen Comes brings back memories of my early days at the public library. That book was on the PNLA Young Readers Choice Award list that we were promoting with school visits. Some schools forbade us from booktalking it because of the ghost element. 8mo
ReadingEnvy @Lindy both Claire's mother and I read it in elementary school. It's funny to see the same authors read now. And people dont seem worried about ghosts these days... 8mo

This one was a low pick for me, but I bet that‘s just because I‘m not the prime audience. Had I read it in high school, I think I would have been obsessed. It‘s got Sherlock Homes meets Harry Potter energy. Truman approved. 🖤

First in the series, this YA mystery novel is set in the Ellingham Academy which takes only those students who have talent and passion for any particular field. The lead character, Stevie is admitted to the Academy for her bent for solving mysteries and particularly her interest in solving a cold case of the kidnapping and murder related to the founder of Ellingham Academy, many years back.
Atmospheric and fast paced with cliffhanger in the end.

Hey, it‘s still Tuesday!

1. The tagged, The Other Black Girl, and Seek You: A Journey through American Loneliness

2. The tagged I‘ve just started, but I‘m intrigued and it seems fun. The Other Black Girl I‘m listening to, and it‘s read *SO* well - the story is also very interesting and kind of bizarre and I can‘t wait to see where it‘s going. I‘m about 1/2 done. Seek You is kind of a coffee table read for me 😉

My Blue Stack.

Dead Dead Girls isn't due until October so I'm concetrating on Last of #SummerReading2021.

The Indigo Spell I finished last week. LOVED IT! Can't wait to discuss with Fictional Hangover #VampireBookClub.

As for Truly Devious. My favorite parts are the mystery in the past. I like the main character but most of the modern day students are annoying, pretentious rich kids.

Cliffhanger ending. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Enjoyable. And I want to know who did it. But not so invested that I just have start Book 2 immediately. Willing to wait for Library Hold. 1y

This was a fun read in so many ways, from the mention of a discussion about dachshunds, to the fact that Stevie reminds me of myself when I was young and obsessed with all things serial killers, mass murderers and being a profiler for the FBI (which did not happen), but love of/fascination for all things true crime still present. Plus I loved all the literary references. #BookspinBingo

Fun first book of a mystery series. Stevie attends a boarding school with the goal to solve the cold case that still haunts the school‘s history. The founder‘s daughter and wife were kidnapped and killed years ago and the only clue was a poem signed off as Truly Devious. A student was also found dead at the same time but that may or may not tie into the case 👀 when a classmate is found dead Stevie wonders, is Truly Devious back?

This book was so fun! I didn‘t have any idea what it was about when I opened it, which is my favorite way to start a book. An elite and unusual private school in Vermont is the setting of a murder back in 1936 and also in the present day. Our heroine is a true crime addict and wants to work in forensics. It‘s YA so expect teen angst but the story is impossible to put down. Things are unresolved at the end so I look forward to the next 2 books!

I don‘t know about you but I like my mysteries to be resolved at the end of book. There were too mysteries in this book and niegue was fully solved by the end. It‘s a giant cliffhanger to get you to buy more books and I didn‘t like how slow the story progressed. I will not read the rest of the series.
