Venetia
Venetia: a heartfelt and charming clean Regency romance | Georgette Heyer
28 posts | 36 read | 27 to read
Reading Georgette Heyer is the next best thing to reading Jane Austen." Publishers Weekly Beautiful, capable, and intendent minded, Venetia Lanyon's life on her family's estate in the country side is somewhat restricted. But her neighbor, the infamous Lord Dameral, a charming rake shunned by polite society is about to shake things up. Lord Damerel has built his life on his dangerous reputation, and when he meets Venetia, he has nothing to offer and everything to regret. Though his scandalous past and deepest secrets give Venetia reason to mistrust him, a rogue always gets what he wants. As Venetia's well-meaning family steps in to protect her from potential ruin, Venetia must find the wherewithal to take charge of her own destiny, or lose her chance at happiness. Charming characters and flawless prose make Venetia a fan favorite from the Queen of Regency Romance. Fans of Mary Balogh, Elizabeth Hoyt and Jane Ashford will be delighted by this story about finding love, redemption, and the courage to follow your heart. Other Regency Romances from Georgette Heyer: Frederica a woman seeking security for her family finds love where, and when, she least expected it Sylvester-She meets none of his requirements for a wife. He is the chief villain in her novel. Cotillion- A sham betrothal isn't the only thing that gets Kitty and Freddy into trouble, but it's definitely the beginning. What readers are saying about Venetia "There are no cardboard cutout characters, they are multi-layered, full of life whether you hate them, love them, laugh at them or barely tolerate them." "Not only do I think that Venetia is Georgette Heyer's best novel, I think Venetia is one of her best characters and certainly one of my favorite heroines in all romance fiction." What reviewers are saying about Venetia "A wonderful story whose characters, settings and, most importantly, dialogue combine to create such a well-crafted story."-Bags, Books, and Bon Jovi "Wonderful characters, elegant, witty writing, perfect period detail, and rapturously romantic"-Katie Fforde "Wonderful and lovely and perfect! Venetia is one of the most charming characters EVER." Once Upon a Bookshelf "An absolutely rollicking Regency romp. I loved it from the first page." Library Queue What everyone has to say about the Queen of Regency Romance Georgette Heyer "Georgette Heyer was one of the great protagonists of the historical novel in the post-war golden age of the form. Her regency romances are delightful light reading..." Philippa Gregory "[Heyer's] characters are witty and beyond charming, her prose is flawless and lighthearted, and her historical detail is immaculate."-Read All Over Reviews "Georgette Heyer is unbeatable." -Sunday Telegraph

Absolutely delightful! Venetia is one of my favorite Heyer heroines - they are always uniquely unconventional, but she was exceptional! Good thing she was of strong character, because she had to endure some infuriating people!

What a great choice, Chrissy! Such a fun round #LMPBC #GroupL !

#1958 for #192025

Chrissyreadit Yay!!! 1y
Librarybelle I should read some of my Heyer for the challenge! 1y

Not a lot to say for this week's #BookReport - I had an insanely busy week at work, plus my husband was off this week so we used the extra time to bring the neverending bathroom remodel up to around 95% done and it's AWESOME!! Like a real room instead of a construction zone!! But not a lot of reading time!! Finished the next Leaphorn & Chee mystery, which was really good. Read about half of The Chosen Twelve and it just wasn't jiving for me so I ⬇

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) bailed. Also read ahead & finished The Flatshare, which I just so thoroughly enjoyed. Currently halfway through Venetia for #LMPBC & it's pretty delightful. Work continues to be crazy mostly because we hire people who show up for maybe one day and then just no call no show so we are perpetually shorthanded and constantly trying to train new people - so frustrating! So I'm not particularly optimistic about upcoming reading time this week! 2y
Cinfhen Shelf looks like it‘s dwindling - and I‘m soooo excited about your bathroom renovation- can‘t wait to see the finished project 2y

I loved this book! Hard to believe it‘s my first Georgette Heyer. I‘m so glad my #LMPBC #GroupL buddies introduced me to her. I adored Venetia. She is such a wonderful example of a strong, smart, kind woman, who knows her mind and follows her heart. So modern for her time.

It‘s on its way to you today, @TheAromaofBooks . I didn‘t finish in time to make yesterday‘s mail. 🙄

1. I love to pick up any of Georgette Heyer‘s Regency romances in between other reads. All of her stories submerge you in a well-built regency world, razor-sharp wit, and exquisite writing! ❤️❤️
2. My favorite place to read is in my big comfy armchair & ottoman in my library or my new recliner in my living room.
3. Coffee ☕️ or diet blackberry sweet tea 🧋

This was exactly as Georgette Heyer should be. A feisty main character, a bunch of silly situations, and a Rake of all Rakes (im still a little worried he is not fully rehabilitated) #lmpbc

March was for two books. Keeper n Me by Richard Wagamese and Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. Both books were a revelation but have left me drained. I need to indulge in a Regency romance and Georgette Heyer is my go-to author. #currentlyreading #palatecleanser

Aah, I get it now, Heyerites! I'd read a couple of her romances in my late teens & thought they were sweet. But reading this, something went "whirrrr, CLICK" in my brain. ? I devoured it. Venetia is a spunky, clever woman who knows her own mind. I love how Heyer indulges in the atmosphere & setting of a Regency romance as it exists in the modern reader's mind, then slyly subverts the tropes with her characters. A perfect read to end the year!

batsy Thank you @Moray_Reads for including this in your list; I truly enjoyed the fizzing romantic vibes & the crisp, witty prose. (I hope it's OK that I got a bit of a headstart on #NewYearWhoDis I'm kind of a slow reader 🙈 @monalyisha) 5y
Moray_Reads This is of my favourites. I love Venetia and Damerel, they're so funny. I recommend Arabella or Frederica next but I've loved almost every one I've read 5y

batsy @LeahBergen I was scrolling through some Heyer posts here and drooling over your hardback collection 😁 5y
LeahBergen @batsy Why, thank you! I need more! 😆 It‘s strange. I was standing in front of my shelves last night, trying to decide on my next read, and I thought “it‘s time for another Heyer”. I now realize that it was this post of yours that subliminally planted it in my brain. 😆 I‘m now currently reading 5y
batsy @LeahBergen Oh, that's great! What is Litsy if not some next level Inception stuff about books to read and buy 😆 I read Venetia on ebook but I feel like Heyer is the kind of author where you want the physical books. I have a couple of the paperbacks but can't resist looking at Abebooks for some vintage hardbacks... 😉 5y
LeahBergen @batsy 😆😆 Right? And yes, I think Heyer is definitely a “paper copy” read. I‘ve found all of my vintage copies at book sales and never spend more than a few dollars on them. 5y

It's been such a busy couple of weeks with work and family stuff I picked this book up at just the perfect moment. This is now my favourite Georgette Heyer with all her trademark humour and silliness but it's the wonderfully unconventional central couple and Venetia's utter determination to have the life she wants - and a fig to anyone who disapproves! - that really make it.

saresmoore Sorry to hear that life is so busy! I‘ve missed your posts. 6y
jillrhudy Is this Venetia or a devilishly handsome “Corinthian” talking? (edited) 6y
Moray_Reads @jillrhudy I would love it if it were Venetia but it's her charming rake 6y

jillrhudy Naturally. All Heyer‘s rakes have really weird swearing like this. “M‘oath! It‘s a catsguts moonswoggling buffoonery! If I weren‘t a gentleman...” 6y
Moray_Reads @jillrhudy 😂😂 you capture it perfectly 6y
Moray_Reads @saresmoore it's been good busy for the most part but it's definitely cut into my Litsy time! 6y

This book held up to the hype as an essential romance read.
I enjoyed the dialogue in this book. I had to take my time, afraid If i skimmed through I might miss some of the witty and clever banter.
This was my first Georgette Heyer novel and I have to say I am a bit sad because I have no clue what to read next (she has written soooo many books) I will find another I‘m sure but for now...

Lord Damerel (reputed rake of the first order)

"Since that date he appeared (if only half the stories told of him were true) to have devoted himself to the pursuit of all the more extravagant forms of diversion, going a considerable way towards dissipating what had once been a handsome fortune, and neglecting no opportunity that offered to convince his critics that he was every bit as black as he had been painted."

My first foray into the romance novel & the first time I've grappled with my own problematic biases against the genre. Venetia was a light & easy joy to read- like a saucier Jane Austen, surprisingly frankly sexual, feat. an opinionated, liberated heroine and stark condemnation of societal mores. Cons: the narration is EXTREMELY BIZARRE sometimes. Pros: everything else. 💕🔜📖

bibliobets Going on that same journey. 7y
elle.noel @bibliobets this is a great one to start with! 7y
bibliobets I have this idea to form a book club for formerly precocious librarians who were brought up believing genre fiction is inferior to lit fic with the obvious goal of eradicating snobbery. This sounds like a good pick for that! 7y
See All 6 Comments
Jayorwhatever I've also been tryna get into the genre.....or at least read like ONE book from it. Maybe a gay-ish one? Still on the hunt for that. But maybe I'll try this one! 7y
elle.noel @Jayorwhatever RIGHT like this genre is HUGE, there's so much varying content to sift through- how explicit you want your material to be, what other genre elements you want it to include, the era you want it set in, characters' sexualities, etc. I have yet to read it and it's M/M but I have heard Call Me By Your Name is a good one for LGBTQ+ romance. 7y
Jayorwhatever @elle.noel oooh I'll look into that! 7y
