Going Clear (Enhanced Edition)
Going Clear (Enhanced Edition): Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief | Lawrence Wright
National Book Award Finalist The enhanced eBook edition of Lawrence Wrights revelatory study of Scientology includes additional photographs and documents, plus more than thirty minutes of original videotaped interviews with former members of the church speaking about what drew them to Scientology and about discovering past lives, the churchs position on abortion and homosexuality, and how the Guardians Office functions; and in interviews with the author, Lawrence Wright speaks about his aims in writing this book, his respect for his sources, and methods of research. A clear-sighted revelation, a deep penetration into the world of Scientology by Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Looming Tower, the now-classic study of al-Qaedas 9/11 attack. Based on more than two hundred personal interviews with current and former Scientologistsboth famous and less well knownand years of archival research, Lawrence Wright uses his extraordinary investigative ability to uncover for us the inner workings of the Church of Scientology. At the books center, two men whom Wright brings vividly to life, showing how they have made Scientology what it is today: The darkly brilliant science-fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard, whose restless, expansive mind invented a new religion. And his successor, David Miscavigetough and driven, with the unenviable task of preserving the church after the death of Hubbard. We learn about Scientologys complicated cosmology and special language. We see the ways in which the church pursues celebrities, such as Tom Cruise and John Travolta, and how such stars are used to advance the churchs goals. And we meet the young idealists who have joined the Sea Org, the churchs clergy, signing up with a billion-year contract. In Going Clear, Wright examines what fundamentally makes a religion a religion, and whether Scientology is, in fact, deserving of this constitutional protection. Employing all his exceptional journalistic skills of observation, understanding, and shaping a story into a compelling narrative, Lawrence Wright has given us an evenhanded yet keenly incisive book that reveals the very essence of what makes Scientology the institution it is.

A lot of time has passed since the full horrors (and oddities) of Scientology were revealed. Even still, this incredibly researched and dense inspection of the so-called religion packs a mighty punch.

This was mostly interesting, but there were times where I just couldn‘t focus. I think I find the personal stories the most interesting (including the other books I‘ve read), though this is a very well-researched detailed account. It‘s pretty scary, though, that journalists, people who have left, etc, anyone who says anything against Scientology appear to be harassed, and in some cases, even framed for crimes they didn‘t commit!

For the publishing year 2013 I selected this one. This book covers the insanity that is this “religion.” Call it what you will this is a cult and it‘s beyond disturbing what goes on and how people are willing to turn their backs on their loved ones for this terrifying group of people. #19822022 #readingchallenge2022 #marchreadinglist @Librarybelle

AmyK1 Have you seen Leah Remini‘s show Scientology and the Aftermath? My family and I are watching it now. Seriously disturbing. 2y
KristiAhlers @AmyK1 yes! OMG I‘ve seen all the seasons. I cried so many times when I heard about all the abuse and brutality with how they just cut a family member out of their lives. So so sad. 2y

In the 1990s, the head of Cult Awareness Network in Chicago wrote, "Scientology is quite likely the most ruthless, the most classically terroristic, the most litigious and the most lucrative cult the country has ever seen." This book painstakingly lays out the truth of each point of that statement in shocking, horrifying details. Yikes. Definitely recommended.

AlaMich Yeah, this book was something else alright... 5y
Amiable @AlaMich It made me look at celebrities like Tom Cruise and John Travolta in a whole different light. 😳 5y

I just had to hear "fascinating man" hubbard's incredibly detailed daily affirmations about his sexual abilities. I can't do this anymore. ??

blurb
Bertha_Mason

I had known scientology was a vicious, life-ruining cult, but I hadn't known how ableist its doctrine is from top to bottom. Yet another reason the author's "neutrality" schtick is getting really old.

blurb
Bertha_Mason

The author has stopped saying "Hubbard claims [x]" and started saying "Hubbard notes [x]." That worries me.

quote
Bertha_Mason

""Exteriorization," the sense that one has actually left [one's] physical being behind, is a commonly reported occurrence for [s]cientologists."

Uh, that's called dissociation. A thing that can happen when one is under extreme stress. Such as, I don't know, when one is sitting uncomfortably close across from a stranger who stares continuously into one's eyes, says everything possible to provoke one, and screams "Flunk!" whenever one moves. ??

A few years ago my father was in the hospital at Kaiser Sunset, located on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood. From his hospital room we could see the Scientology building across the street. It was fascinating to witness, strange and creepy to see people running, not walking, at all hours made me think #🤷🏻‍♀️

The used books gods have been good to me this week. Dropped off the recycling on my way home and what was sitting on the top of the book recycling box, a book that's been on my to-read list since I read Troublemaker (tagged below) and one of the few Peabody series that I didn't get at the library sale earlier this week.

It's not the first time I've picked up new or used books out of the recycling book bin, try not to judge me too harshly 🙈🙊🙉

Sneaking in a #recommendsday pick🙂.
I saw the HBO doc made from this book, & was disappointed. It didn't cover new ground.
But the book covers it ALL! It's very thorough, rich in detail, well-sourced, fact-checked, & still riveting.
As a person who lives in a stained-glass house, I try not to judge other faiths. But Wright leaves little doubt that Scientology is exactly what's accused of being: a cult. Hard to read at points, but worth it.

respekt1111 So weird! I just posted about scientology too! 7y
Sweettartlaura @respekt1111 Great minds...🙂 7y
Joanne1 I read this last year and am now reading the Australian perspective. A cult aimed to make money and cause suffering! 7y
See All 8 Comments
Smrloomis I was surprised by how engrossing a read this was. I really appreciate Wright's work and feel for the people caught up in it, but it's also the last Scientology related book for me (at least for a while). Really good, though! 7y
Sweettartlaura @Joanne1 I never thought of them as having the purpose of causing suffering. Making money, yes, sure. But causing suffering... Interesting perspective... Thanks for sharing! 7y
Sweettartlaura @Smrloomis It was SO engrossing, wasn't it? I also have Beyond Belief to listen to, written by David Miscavige's niece. But I'll put that off for a bit, too - this was more intense than I expected. 7y
Joanne1 @Sweettartlaura probably not its original purpose but under its current leadership I think suffering and humiliation is a major motivating factor. At least as I understand it. 7y

Here is my freaked out face after finishing this book. In middle school, I got mildly obsessed with Charles Manson after seeing Dianne Sawyer interview him and some of the Manson Family women in 1993. It sparked a lifelong fascination with religion, including cults and new religions, and what compels people to follow a master so absolutely. This is a very in-depth look into Scientology. (More in comments)

BeckyWithTheGoodBooks Wright provides vivid details about Scientology's founder, L. Ron Hubbard (a prolific science fiction writer), the religion's organization, and its dispute with the IRS to gain tax-exemption status. It also explores the religion's desire for celebrity spokespeople, most notably, Tom Cruise. (edited) 7y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks Using interviews with people that have left the Church, it also examines allegations of abuse by its highest ranking members for doing anything perceived as bringing criticism upon the Church. If half of the stories within this book are true (and there is no reason to believe they are not), Scientology is truly a frightening organization and a horrifying example of how absolute power can erode the minds of those wielding it. 7y
BeckyWithTheGoodBooks I highly recommend reading this book (and watching the HBO documentary of the same name) if belief systems, scandal, controversy, or comparative religion are interesting to you. 7y

I gave this a "pick" because the material fascinates me, but if you're not obsessed with cults, then this would probably just be "so-so." There's a lot about the history of Scientology, Hubbard, the current crazy leader, Miscavige, and celebrities (far too much about Tom Cruise). Learning about the beliefs of Scientologists, I'm even more fascinated. As for the writing, the author loses focus occasionally, but eventually circles back to the topic.

Hooked_on_books I agree--I found this book fascinating! (And I'm not obsessed with cults. 😉) 7y

4.5🌟story & narration Listening to this nearly back to back with Inside Scientology was interesting. While IS looked more at the rank and file members of both the church and Sea Org, GC looked more at the celebrity members and the top Sea Org brass. The book was told through the lens of Paul Haggis, a famous Hollywood writer. Both books did a fairly similar job of portraying LRH and David Miscavige. Overall, I recommend them both.
