The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl
The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl | Issa Rae
In the bestselling tradition of Sloane Crosleys I Was Told Thered Be Cake and Mindy Kalings Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, a collection of humorous essays on what its like to be unabashedly awkward in a world that regards introverts as hapless misfits, and black as cool.My name is J and Im awkwardand black. Someone once told me those were the two worst things anyone could be. That someone was right. Where do I start? Being an introvert in a world that glorifies cool isnt easy. But when Issa Rae, the creator of the Shorty Awardwinning hit series The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, is that introvertwhether shes navigating love, work, friendships, or rappingit sure is entertaining. Now, in this debut collection of essays written in her witty and self-deprecating voice, Rae covers everything from cybersexing in the early days of the Internet to deflecting unsolicited comments on weight gain, from navigating the perils of eating out alone and public displays of affection to learning to accept yourselfnatural hair and all. A reflection on her own unique experiences as a cyber pioneer yet universally appealing, The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl is a book no oneawkward or cool, black, white, or otherwill want to miss.

Lucky for me, I found this signed copy at Ollie‘s!! 🥳 (Probably unlucky for the author ☹️) After sitting on the shelf for two years, I picked it up, and I really enjoyed it!

It‘s a memoir in non-chronological essays where she writes about growing up half Senegalese, her parents divorce, not fitting in at a south central LA high school, dating, making friends, trying to “find yourself”, and being successful as a web series artist. 4⭐️

k.reads.5 I have this and need to read it! I'm a big fan of Issa! 4mo

Post 1 of 3. I've been falling behind on reading updates! I've finished a few audiobooks recently so time to catch up. This was a nice glimpse into to the life of Issa Rae, who I only knew from Insecure. I thought I would relate to her story a bit more since the title basically describes my life. But she doesn't seem that awakrd honestly. Her story was inspiring and entertaining none the less, I definitely want to see more from this chick.

📸 Awkward selfie alert! 📸 So I love Issa Rae and was prepared to love this book. But while a few of the essays were excellent and chuckle-quietly-funny, a lot of them fell flat, Issa‘s unique voice and perspective not coming through the pages. Still, I‘m glad I got to know a little more about her.

Doing some #audiobaking this afternoon. An attempt to use up leftover Halloween candy! I‘ve chopped up all those little Twix and 100 Grand bars and am adding them to oatmeal cookie dough. Also, I replaced half of the plain flour with white whole wheat. So it‘s a healthy cookie 🍪 right?

[Book 11 of 2018] Funny yet honest memoir. I wasn't into some of the "ABG guide" chapters but I highly enjoyed the rest. I loved listening to Issa Rae read the book, and I was able to get into it a lot more than when I read the first few chapters in print.

I relate to Issa Rae. I enjoyed this book. Very few people understood me growing up because I was so awkward. Hell I‘m still awkward at 30. I have to make a point to stop talking because my anxiety makes me talk too much. I have to tell myself to speak to strangers when they speak to me. It‘s hard work being awkward lol... oh and I can‘t dance. There I said it. I‘ve got all this ass and I cannot move it. It‘s a burden 😂😂

Besides, my great-grandmother‘s oak grand piano was just sitting in our living room, collecting dust (and random stickers, much to my mother‘s annoyance. “Who keeps putting stickers on the piano?!”).

#IssaRae's book was ok. She has some interesting but familiar insights into being half Senegalese & half Black American, growing up in the 90s, pop culture, family relationships, & media. Her humor shines in some portions. Overall, I enjoyed what she had to say more than how she said it. Borderline thumbs up/so-so. #blackwomenwriters #diversebooks

Realized today that I had this is both print and audio. Made it easy to finish today while working.

The tone of this book is different than either her web series of the same title or her HBO series, Insecure [which I HIGHLY RECOMMEND].

The memoir is more a series of autobiographical essays. It is better look at each chapter individually than the entire book.

I enjoyed it immensely.

Question to the community! Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fit reading into a busy schedule? I've been doing well with adding in audiobooks to my daily walk but as work has been in a busy season, struggling to find time to read physical books which makes me sad. What are some things you do to fit reading into your life? #asklitsy

Notafraidofwords I don't think about quantity. I used to stress out about how much I read. Now, just reading 10 pages a night makes me feel better. Oh, and I always try to read on my lunch break. 2y
Sace I always try to read with my morning coffee and at least 10 minutes before bed. 2y
PandaPanda I agree with reading before bed. I find I sleep a lot better too if I disconnect and read a bit as well. 2y

laurencjay @Notafraidofwords I definitely stress out about how much I read. Social media networks like these can be a blessing and a curse in that way. I just get too much book FOMO 2y

Issa Rae calls herself a "moderate feminist" and I think that's why aspects of this fell flat for me. I was hoping this would be more intersectional, but it's riddled with microaggressions toward disabled, trans, and Native folx. But I did enjoy the conversational tone, as well as her stories and insights about her childhood, adolescence, and later, interacting with her (then divorced) parents as an adult.
