Booked to Die
Booked to Die | John Dunning
25 posts | 41 read | 62 to read
First in the Cliff Janeway series from national bestselling author John Dunning. Denver homicide detective Cliff Janeway may not always play by the book, but he is an avid collector of rare and first editions. After a local book scout is killed on his turf, Janeway would like nothing better than to rearrange the suspects spine. But the suspect, local lowlife Jackie Newton, is a master at eluding the law, and Janeways wrathful brand of off-duty justice costs him his badge. Turning to his lifelong passion, Janeway opens a small bookshopall the while searching for evidence to put Newton away. But when prized volumes in a highly sought-after collection begin to appear, so do dead bodies. Now, Janeways life is about to start a precarious new chapter as he attempts to find out whos dealing death along with vintage Chandlers and Twains.

This was such a good read. An interesting premise and main character. A cop, who gives up his job reluctantly, but has a taste for old and valuable books. When a “book scout” gets murdered and word of a highly valuable book collection goes missing, Cliff Janeway steps up to the task of trying to find out who and why they wanted him dead. When 2 more bodies are found it becomes much more personal. I gave this 4 but definitely a 5 ⭐️ book.

TiredLibrarian Great series! 11mo
mesquite @TiredLibrarian I‘ve got the first 2 on Kindle and on Audible Plus. I‘ll try to get to the others ASAP. I really did enjoy this one. George Guidall is one of my favorite narrators. 11mo

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description or reason for wanting to read the book. Some are old and some will be new. Don't judge me - I have a lot of books.

#20series20days Day 18 One of my favorite series from back in the day about a retired detective turned bookseller. I was sorry the series ended so soon. I should probably reread the one day.

Andrew65 Another interesting looking series. 4y

Congratulations on your big 200k, @vivastory ! I‘m sure glad we “met” here on Litsy. ❤️

I was trying to think of a different sort of fictional bibliophile than all my usual childhood favourites and remembered this series of “Bookman” mysteries I‘d read years ago. It may be time for a reread!

Thanks for the fun giveaway! 😘

#vivabibliophile

EadieB I enjoyed this book too! I need to read more of this series! 4y
Owlizabeth Oh man, I forgot about this series! So good!! 4y

BookishMe I remember enjoying this!! But didn't get to continue the series ;( don't think the subsequent titles were available in the library 😔 The other Bookman story that got me fascinated in book restoration - 4y
vivastory Thanks, Leah! I'm also really glad to have met you on here. I had never heard of this one before, definitely intrigued! 4y
Amiable I really enjoyed this series! Although my (possibly faulty) memory is telling me that the earlier books were better than the last one or two ... ? 4y

This is the first in a series about Cliff Janeway, a cop-turned-bookseller. Once he opens his used/rare bookstore, Janeway gets involved in three murders in the Denver neighborhood around his bookstore and puts his former policing skills to good use. A fairly good beginning for a series that only gets better. 👌 👍

A good read for those interested in book collecting. Cliff Janeway moves from being a cop to owning a used/rare book store. He gets involved in the deaths of his store clerk and two book scouts who search for used and rare books to sell to bookstore owners. Janeway has strengths and foibles as a cop (he has it in for a grownup bully) and a person (he's protective of the clerk and wants justice for the scouts). Fairly good pacing and read.

Deblovestoread I really liked this series when I read it years ago. 5y
MaGoose @Kdgordon88 That's good to know. I'm starting the second book in the series and find there's a lot of exposition about book collecting and the Grayson Press and the two brothers who ran it. I'm fairly interested so I'll read on, but it may be kinda dull for someone who just wants a good mystery. 5y
Annl I really enjoyed the series. I still have one book left to read. 5y

I really didn‘t like this one...and it‘s weird, since it‘s set in the book world. But, I really didn‘t like Janeway, the cop turned bookseller. It‘s almost like Dunning tried to make him too tough, while throwing every tough guy cliche he could find into the narrative. Plus, there was a dig on librarians. You don‘t, even in jest, say bad things about librarians. This had a 100% rating on Litsy - definitely #unpopularopinion ! #24B4Monday

Andrew65 That‘s really disappointing! Well done on the time! 5y

CarolynM This is another series my husband really likes but I've never tried. Your review isn't encouraging. 5y
Librarybelle @CarolynM I‘ve heard rave reviews about it from others, and everyone else on Litsy liked it. I just have a hang up on male characters that almost force their toughness on the reader. That and wise crack jokes that just didn‘t add to it. It‘s probably just me! 5y
RamsFan1963 I got this book from Goodwill. It sounded interesting, but now I'm having second thoughts 5y
Librarybelle @RamsFan1963 It‘s probably just me. I may try another in the series, just to see if I like that one better. 5y

Originally kicked off 30th birthday celebrations yesterday when my dad came through town. The day isn't till tomorrow, but we decided to get going early with a new bookshelf (squee!) and a trip to our local indie bookstore. Illustrated Neverwhere and two mysteries! #bookhaul

Pruzy How are the Neverwhere illustrations? 7y

Simply adore this series by John Dunning. In the 80's, Dunning opened a bookstore specializing in used and rare books. In the 90s, he published his first Cliff Janeway mystery about a man who opens just such a store and solves mysteries involving rare books. Extremely well written and highly recommended. #setinlibrariesbookstores #SeasonsReadings2016

I loved it! Before I started it I figured it would be another mystery novel that was good but nothing to get excited about. I was so wrong. I don't know why I enjoyed this book as much as I did, but I will be diving into the second one immediately :)

Until about three years ago, I was a strict book monogamist. I absolutely had to finish a book before starting another. But now I'm all over the place with my reading lol! Like this: @jennirl just posted a photo that reminded me I have had this forever and not read it. So here I go!

mkindness I read those way back when... Lots of fun! 8y

Bookquilter I just purged this from my TBR pile on Monday... I've had it for 10 years and it never got to the top....maybe I will go dig it out of the Friends of the Library box 8y
Liberty @Bookquilter Haha, I have seriously had it since 2001 in a box and last night was just its time, I guess. I highly recommend it - you'll whip right through it. 😀 8y
mkindness I'd forgotten about his middle name! 8y
SaraFair It blew my mind when I saw people reading several books at once on the Goodreads challenge!! What???!! So I tried it, and actually read more and faster cause I can grab what I am in the mood for with about 5 to choose from at any time. Feels like cheating but makes sense! 8y
