The Night the Lights Went Out
The Night the Lights Went Out | Karen White
75 posts | 42 read | 53 to read
From the New York Times bestselling author of the Tradd Street series comes a stunning new novel about a young single mother who discovers that the nature of friendship is never what it seems.... Recently divorced, Merilee Talbot Dunlap moves with her two children to the Atlanta suburb of Sweet Apple, Georgia. Its not her first time starting over, but her efforts at a new beginning arent helped by an anonymous local blog that dishes about the scandalous events that caused her marriage to fail. Merilee finds some measure of peace in the cottage she is renting from town matriarch Sugar Prescott. Though stubborn and irascible, Sugar sees something of herself in Merileesomething that allows her to open up about her own colorful past. Sugars stories give Merilee a different perspective on the town and its wealthy school moms in their tennis whites and shiny SUVs, and even on her new friendship with Heather Blackford. Merilee is charmed by the glamorous young mothers seemingly perfect life and finds herself drawn into Heather's world. In a town like Sweet Apple, where sins and secrets are as likely to be found behind the walls of gated mansions as in the dark woods surrounding Merilees house, appearance is everything. But just how dangerous that deception can be will shock all three women....

Reading this via audiobook which makes it extra fun! Was hesitant at first having not read Karen White, but glad I jumped in. My new favorite phrase is, “Well bless her heart”. This is the best transition to use before slapping someone with an insult.

SO GOOD. Long story short - Southern charm with a little mystery & a lot of real life. I don‘t think I quite understood what this book is about when I started reading it. I expected some kind of love story - and it is, but not what I expected. Nor did I expect the murder. Somehow missed that little detail. Either way, I highly recommend reading this beautiful & beautifully written story.

Things aren‘t as sweet in Sweet Apple as they appear. The residents‘ true agendas run far deeper than you realize at the start. While I had one of the main characters pegged from the beginning, I would have never guessed how everything would conclude. It was easy to become invested in the characters and I anxiously awaited the next plot twists along the way. This was my first Karen White book and it most certainly won‘t be the last. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Sins

LOVE her books. ❤️

I am going to parallel the word SECRETS with the word SINS for my post today. :)

Readers of women's fiction will again be transported back to the days of Southern hospitality and then brought back to current day with women who keep secrets and have everything and like to flaunt it.

I thoroughly enjoyed the way the writer made all of the character‘s lives here so interesting that I forgot it was even a mystery til 3/4 of the way in. Recc‘d for: anyone who feels like immersing themselves in a southern-fried Big Little Lies. Also, anyone who every now and then find themselves missing those little things that make the south such a unique place. Just make sure to have some sweet tea and biscuits handy. You can thank me later.

Still loving this book(and it‘s intermittent blog posts!). I especially appreciate the above passage. I would give it five stars and some 🙌🏼🙌🏼 emojis- but instead I think I‘ll go with true stereotypical millennial style and give it five avocados of approval 🥑🥑🥑🥑🥑

mrsmarch And just WHO was giving out "participation awards" to all the little kids so no one's feelings would be hurt?! The parents of those millennials! They're complaining about a phenomenon because they feel guilty for doing wrong by their children but I think millennials will improve the world by leaps once they become the leaders. 2y

tjwill What's your favorite epistolary book? I need a good recommendation. 2y
Laalaleighh @tjwill one of my favorite books is slightly epistolary, and has a really interesting skewed timeline aspect done by an author that really knows how to do an ending is Stone's Fall by Iain Pears. For something lighter, I personally really enjoyed Where'd You Go Bernadette by Maria Semple. On a more YA theme Eliza and Her Monsters is one of my favorite YA contemporary novels I've read. One I haven't read but plan to soon: Possession by AS Byatt. (edited) 2y
