In the Tall Grass | Joe Hill, Stephen King
47 posts | 59 read | 56 to read
Mile 81 meets N. in this eBook collaboration between Stephen King and Joe Hill. As USA TODAY said of Stephen Kings Mile 81: Park and scream. Could there be any better place to set a horror story than an abandoned rest stop? In the Tall Grass begins with a sister and brother who pull off to the side of the road after hearing a young boy crying for help from beyond the tall grass. Within minutes they are disoriented, in deeper than seems possible, and theyve lost one another. The boys cries are more and more desperate. What follows is a terrifying, entertaining, and masterfully told tale, as only Stephen King and Joe Hill can deliver.

Whew boy, this is a creepy story!! It started out with a very classic Stephen King feeling and then it got more and more bonkers as it neared the end. This one is wild, friends. There are some scenes that could have been deleted 💤 and some very detailed and nasty scenes 🤢 but overall it‘s a fun little tale by the master and his son.

This was a reread, but it was still good. I've seen the Netflix show, and it was filmed well, but the creepiness of this story was difficult to fully capture on the screen. I love the descent into madness that the characters go through.

In the Tall Grass by Stephen King and Joe Hill is a bizarre and horrifying tale of two siblings that walk into a field after hearing a young boy call for help. Once they have stepped into the grass, they very quickly realize that they should have heeded the warnings and small red flags that they had brushed aside just moments ago…

Words of warning: don't read this while you are attempting to eat, especially if you have a week stomach.

I can see why this story may not be for everybody but for me it classic King. It is creepy, suspenseful, and extremely detailed. It gives you the heebie jeebies, but in a good way.

JenlovesJT47 Have you watched the movie? I just read this last week. It definitely sticks with you! 😱 5y

Since all of my library holds have seemed to come in at once I don't think I will actually get to the original Stephen King book I picked for my TBR this month (the Shining). You can't have October without a spooky read though so I decided it was time to check out this novella, plus then I can finally watch the movie.

Slajaunie I saw this! I did not realize it was a book. Creepy!! 5y
jackilynn @Slajaunie It is a short story mabye 60 pages or so. I think it was originally published as a ebook but now may be available in a collection of short stories. I was going to read it all last night but decided I needed to get sleep at some point since I had be up early for work today. My goal is to finish it tonight. I am enjoying it so far though I can see why it may not be for everyone. 5y
Slajaunie I watched the movie. 5y

One word sums this short story up perfectly: Ew! 😱😭

I‘m giving it a pick because it definitely succeeds in being very disturbing/terrifying. But it definitely won‘t be some people‘s cup of tea.

I have to say that this is one of the few times that the movie is better than the book. I watched the movie last night and found it more interesting. The story has some good points but nothing great. So I read the book and watch the movie. How many points?

Watching In the Tall Grass. Already right out of the gate, the differences are glaring. But I suppose you don't really have a choice when the story is only 60-something pages and it's creepy because of its simplicity and its vast nothing but grassiness, you gotta flesh it out.

#scarathlon #teamslaughter @Clwojick

madamereadsalot1 Major departures from the novella, but they left my favorite quote in, so there's that 5y

This was my first audiobook I've ever listened to! I thought the narrator was great with his different voices for each character. The story was good and creepy (just what I expected with Mr. King and Mr. Hill). Basically a brother and sister are on their way to a new home and driving through Kansas and hear a boy's pleas for help in the tall grass. This isn't your typical grass and it gets really weird and creepy. 4 stars

Just in time for the #scarathlon I intend to win a point for #teamslaughter by watching this when it comes out next month! Although I see HUGE glaring differences between the novella and the trailer, I'm still excited to see it. The book was excellent, I'll probably hate the movie. Ha!

Anyone else read this and/or plan to watch the movie?

Clwojick Ooooh. *scurries off to watch the trailer* 5y
Clwojick It looks good, but I‘ll admit that I haven‘t read much King. I‘ll definitely watch this though! 5y
madamereadsalot1 @Clwojick if you have the chance to read it, you should! His son Joe Hill is my second favorite author (Gaiman being my first), and it feels like him more than King to me. (Maybe because I'm biased? 🤔 😆) It's very short, and it would definitely add points for our team! (black cover and one other I'm not saying) 5y

Clwojick Whoa. I just looked it up and its only 60pages?! I can definitely do that! I'm gonna see if my library has the physical book, since it's not available on Libby or CloudLibrary. I have some of James Patterson's Bookshots set aside for easy points too. 😉 5y
madamereadsalot1 @Clwojick I've never read James Patterson before but my stepmom just gave me one that other day and it's tiny, so I'm intending to read it for the points too! 5y
Clwojick Yes! I‘ve read a lot of his books, and enjoyed most. The book shots are perfect when you‘re in the mood for a quick one, and the Women‘s Murder Club series is great too! 5y
madamereadsalot1 @Clwojick I'll have to look up the Woman's Murder Club series. I've never heard of it! 5y

Creepy story by King and his son, Joe Hill. The premise was great. Two people traveling cross-country hear a kid yelling for help. They venture into the tall grass to help him and then the scare factor increases as they find themselves separated and lost. Things go extremely dark at the end and a little off the rails, which is why this is a so-so pick for me. Apparently, it is currently being made into a movie too.

I was recommended this by a friend. He said he couldn't get into it but I was looking for something....dark, non-fairytale, and grim. Sometimes the "Happily ever after" endings just get a bit mundane.
It is a novella, and indeed a quick read, but BOY WHAT A READ. It satisfied my dark, haunting hankering and this is a cautionary "Read at your own risk" book.

TheBookKeepers Sounds creeeeepy! Maybe I need to add this to a Halloween TBR list 😝 6y

I had heard this about Joe Hill, apparently he wanted to try to make it on his own and he did, long before it was revealed that he was King's son. I've read most of his books and he's a tremendous writer. Two of my favorites are this one and Throttle, both novellas he wrote with his father.
