Listened to the audiobook. Not too keen, the conspiracy stuff was too ‘out there‘, not enough light parts to lift the dark, and too many coincidences. Doubt I‘d have persisted if reading hard copy instead of listening.

Mostly narration about a shoplifter with few emotions who gets pulled into a giant conspiracy. The passage of time in this book was really weird. It would be described as if months had passed when it was only a week. I found the ending very anticlimactic and the book was overall dull.

What a pleasure to get to see 2 authors on my #TBR on the same night, and interviewing each other no less! Gus is the best kind of nerd and his novel was inspired by a specific piece from Duchamp (not the urinal), hence the name "Ready-Made". Alex was predominantly asking the questions but we learned that his character, Eastman, was loosely based on Norman Mailer.

Can't wait to push these up my stack. ??

seebiscan So jealous! The Readymade Thief was amazing. 7y

UrbanEx, mysteries in art, drugs, it's like Dan Brown meets Cory Doctorow and is a fun read. You'll be googling some things.

Today I'm dedicating to getting through some review copies. I'm on the verge of bailing on the Egan and just need to decide, and to try the others. There are many more but tackling four will help! Will link book titles below in case you aren't familiar.

A teenage girl caught up in the conspiracies of an artistic secret society- the start was promising. The building blocks of the story were good, but it tried to have it all: art, physics, history, crime...the details bogged down the pace (telling, not showing)and overshadowed the characters. I'm open to rereading in case something flew over my head, but I was hoping for more. 2.75/5

Publishers seem to have found a new front cover design and run full-tilt with it. I like it, especially the 3-d effect it creates to the passive glance. Have you seen other covers with a similar style of the title being placed "underneath" a messy, complicated hodge-podge?

LDuffN Into the Water 7y
NovelGirl82 The Lying Game is sort of that way. 7y
MrBook @LDuffN Yeah! That one fits the bill. @NovelGirl82 That's very similar to Thief. 7y

This book just didn't do it for me like I'd hoped. It started off interesting enough but the level of detail about art and conspiracy theories I had to retain in order to follow half the plot was simply too much. It became distracting and felt like this was an art version of The Following but less good. Lee's story and subplot was engaging enough but overall, I struggled with this one. However, I can absolutely see why people would love it.

Yeah, it has a great cover but the story is pretty good too. You can choose your friends but you can't choose your family (well, you can but that's another conversation). Both these truths work out poorly for Lee Cuddy who finds herself on the run after being betrayed by an erstwhile friend & her family. She is soon the target of a group of fanatics who want something she has. An interesting examination of the power art & ideas hold over us.

I have been waiting to share this with you Littens! This is a fantastic book about Lee, who is on the run from some of the strangest conspiracies you can possibly imagine. She isn't sure who to trust in this strange city and saying too much will give away the delight and suspense that make this such a wonderful read.

Lee is a girl used to being invisible. So when she finds herself in the middle of a secret societies obsession she doesn't know who to trust or where to turn. An impressively layered story filled with art history, conspiracies and betrayal. An unfortunate main character that seems to find herself on the wrong side of situations over and over. Lee finds herself in a twisted game and doesn't know which people are lying and which are honest. If I were her, I'd have been holed up in my closet forever. 😂

Thank you @PenguinRandomCa @penguinusa @PenguinPublishing @penguinrandomhouse for the ARC. I would have to say that this book was an "Art Mystery". But it has other elements as well that keep the story fascinating and unputdownable.

Inadvertently the artist Marcel Duchamp becomes a big character in this story. Try and find a copy when it comes out this summer.

I genuinely don't know if I liked this or not?? It was dense and disturbing and fascinating and unputdownable. A mix of art and urban exploration and physics and drugs and secret societies... I'm interviewing this author for Shelf Awareness next week and I am going to have to put a ton of time into thinking up my questions for him!

#TBRtemptation post 4! #BEA17 edition! Slated for an early August release. This debut novel is getting major props as an addictive literary puzzle involving a young heroine & a secret society. Lee's a homeless Philly teen taking refuge in the Crystal Castle, a co-op for homeless kids, & befriends Tomi, a young artist & hacker. The place is run by men seeking to decode Marcel Duchamp's art for dark gain. #blameLitsy #blameMrBook 😎#Coale photobomb
