Moments that I loved and some parts that I found a bit dull…but overall 3.5 🌟

CarolynM How are you Sally? Scary times 1w
Freespirit Hi Carolyn I am good. We are busy at work with increasing numbers of Covid patients, and staff shortages due to illness☹️I have avoided it so far but it is probably inevitable that we all get it! Wearing all that PPE is a pain! How are you going? Hope you are well. I partly blame our PM and premier for a lack of leadership!! @CarolynM 1w
CarolynM We are ok, getting our boosters on Tuesday - I've been on tenterhooks since Christmas about picking it up before then. I can't believe how the federal govt seems to be taken by surprise by every predictable consequence of their decisions. Thinking of you and your fellow health care workers💕 1w
Freespirit I agree totally. I feel like we‘ve had 2 years to watch what happened OS and plan for the best way to manage this virus. We could have been so organised!! Stay healthy @CarolynM 1w

And with this book, SJM loses me a lot. Aelin is conniving, and after 5 books her lack of communication is so frustrating. Especially when combined with SJM‘s habit of springing “known” info on the readers, it was a slog. Also, the repetition is a little annoying. “Rutting” isn‘t a great word, and absolutely does not replace the f-word well. Just say f*ck with your whole chest, please.

Pickpick

The last book I finished before camp ended! Heir of Fire and Queen of Shadows are probably my favorite books in this whole series. Chaol can jump off the tallest glass spire, but I enjoy everyone else. Rowan and his cadre are still my favorite characters, and Elide/Manon‘s storylines are more compelling than the others, but I still had a good time.

Pickpick

If you are looking for a beach read this will be perfect. Clarke sets the mood quickly as you feel Erin's desperation to find out what has happened to her sister, Lori. Regrets and secrets follow every character as the truth unravels. With hints of 'Lost' and 'Castaway' this is a quick read mystery.

There were parts that I really loved but it didn't blow my socks off. I wish the entire book had been Jenny and Boot, I lost interest in the last part.

Spoilers in the comments, but this book really pissed me off in a couple places. I do definitely remember liking it, and apparently I gave it a “pick” rating before, but now? Again, after growing up, I‘ve changed and so has my rating.

MsRadioSilence Why - *why* - did Nehemia have to die? Answer: she didn‘t. Chaol could‘ve died and Celaena could‘ve been radicalized that way, or Dorian. She had other friends besides Nehemia that could‘ve served the same purpose. Her death was just a waste of such a good character, and also dropped the diversity of the book back to zero. 6mo
MsRadioSilence I also hate the casual mentions of new characters? And like, ones that had an IMPORTANCE to Celaena‘s backstory too. Sam wasn‘t mentioned until pg 70 in ToG, and Farran seemed like an afterthought. And some reviews I‘ve read discussed how Celaena killed Archer, and she 100% stabbed him in the heart at the end, not gutted him. 6mo

I remember liking this a lot more the first time I read it, but a lot has changed since then. I‘m older than Celaena, which shouldn‘t make so much of a difference but it really does. She seems childish, and makes observations that should seem obvious that aren‘t. Also, I really hate love triangles. I think they‘re dumb, and this one sets up a triangle that‘s…dumber than most. Nehemia is by far one of my favorite characters, but she‘s used so (1)

MsRadioSilence irresponsibly. I can‘t remember if she plays a bigger role in the next book, and I think that speaks volumes. Anyway. 2/5 stars for YA mediocrity. #summerreads #rereads #camp (2) (edited) 6mo
