Spiky, sardonic, and reclusive Loveday Cardew prefers books to people. If you look carefully you might glimpse the first lines of the novels she loves the most tattooed on her skin. But there are secrets that Loveday will never share...
Fifteen years ago, in one unspeakable, violent moment, Loveday lost all she knew and loved. Now, she finds refuge in the enchanting little book emporium where she works.
But something shifts for Loveday when a performance poet comes in to the shop, looking for something he lost. Between them, there's a spark...
Not long after Nathan's arrival, mysterious packages begin arriving for Loveday. Each one contains a seemingly unremarkable book. But each book stirs unsettling memories for her - some bittersweet, some too painful to bear.
Someone is trying to send Loveday a message, and she can't hide any longer.
It seems someone knows.
It's time for Loveday to take charge of how her story unfolds. She must decide who around her she can truly trust and find the courage to right a heartbreaking wrong. And if she does, she might just find her way home...

I can‘t even express how much I love this book. How much I love Loveday and Archie and Nathan. I am leaving this book crying - tears of sadness, tears of happiness, and tears that this book is over. This was a book that found me. I was looking for something else in the library that wasn‘t available and this was another recommendation. A much much much better book in my opinion!!

Things have been stressful so I really needed a reas that I could sink into like a bubble bath and this book really helped me turn my brain off. Loveday has worked in a bookstore since she was 15 years old. She loves her job, its paternal and eccentric owner, and books. She really does not need anything else in her life. Suddenly pieces of the past she is trying to put behind her start turning up as well as compelling stranger she cannot ignore.

Mimi28 I hope things calm down ❤️❤️Sorry I haven‘t written in so long. Email me if you‘d like to 😊😊 4mo

Latest #bookhaul from the Dorchester (UK) Waterstones store. A question, #littens - how do you find out about new authors to read? I tend to browse when I‘m in a bookshop to see what takes my fancy, but I‘m also dependent on friends‘ and bloggers recommendations and what I see here on #litsy. Thoughts?

janeycanuck I listen to podcasts - Book Riot has a few, including some genre-specific ones. 4mo
JillR More recently it‘s been entirely Litsy recommendations for me in terms of new authors and books 😊 4mo
RachelAmphlett @janeycanuck yes, I‘m a fan of podcasts too - esp the shorter ones of, say, 30 mins that I can fit in around work! 4mo
See All 6 Comments
RachelAmphlett @JillR I love mooching around here and finding new ideas for what to read, but I like it when someone discovers an old favourite of mine that I haven‘t read for a while, too! 4mo
mcipher So much Litsy - I‘ve branched out tons since joining and learned to love new genres. I also get recs from family, friends, book club, Goodreads... and I pick up random things at the library far too often. 4mo
RachelAmphlett @mcipher yes, my historical fiction TBR pile has grown since I‘ve been here! 4mo

I‘m still on the fence about Loveday constantly talking about how broken she was. When a character refuses to talk to the people in the story but shares everything with the audience, I always feel a little off. BUT this was a lovely book. Not the fluffy piece I was hoping for but it was a beautiful exploration of the effect of constant trauma on a person and I‘m glad it ended with Loveday realizing how important accepting help is.

I‘m feeling iffy at the start of this as I‘m not big on characters that promote themselves as “not like others” and this feels a bit like that, but it seems like it‘ll be cute and endearing so still keeping it up!

This story was told by hopping back and forth between 1999, 2013, and 2016. Intricate characters were developed as the protagonist, Loveday Cardew, told her story. Abusive relationships, mental illness, foster care, grief and despair, forgiveness and love of all sorts are the main themes of this fascinating story. Another winner.

An understated but lovely story that reminded me a lot of The Storied Life of A J Fikry. The main character in this book, Loveday, has a past she guards fiercely. A rather closed character, it gradually becomes clear over the course of the book the troubles Loveday has faced and the reason for her aloofness. An easy to read book that tugs at your emotions. There are some nice book references too. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

What a TREASURE ! Be warned- the cover is very deceiving. I got this one because I was in a Book Slump and needed a Light Breezy Read. This book has its hilarious parts, and amazing lovable characters, but Loveday has been through heartache, and much pain has been done to her and been felt by her. HOWEVER, happy tears were shed! Bittersweet ending, but a wonderful story full of surprises !

Loveday is a bookseller at the bookshop the novel is named after & she was basically adopted by the owner after she stole a book & eventually found solace in the shop. The chapters flit between 1999, 2013, & 2016 and are catalogued according to the contents, either named as Crime, History, Poetry, Memoir, and Travel. I felt so much comfort in her likes (books+writing poetry), dislikes (people+being social) & insecurities (her family's history).

TrishB I enjoyed this one too 👍🏻 9mo

I found this in my library's book nook recently and requested it on audio via Overdrive. It was an acceptable entry in the seemingly booming bookstore genre—not extraordinary, but good enough.

This morning's toast came from my second loaf of bread made after a very long hiatus. I'll have to tinker with the whole wheat:bread flour ratio. Tomorrow I may venture into pizza dough. Doing what I can to stay out of the polar vortex!

The best way to describe this book may be one of the reviews on the cover: “Burns fiercely with love and hurt.” This isn‘t just some cutesy novel about a bookshop. Yes, book lovers will enjoy the setting, book references, etc., but this is a deeper story of dealing with trauma, loss, vulnerability and love.

Enjoyed it more than I thought I would, likely because the story was more than I thought it would be!

If it wasn‘t for the #readathon I don‘t think I would‘ve finished this. I felt like I was reading a totally different book than everyone else!
