City of Dark Magic
City of Dark Magic: A Novel | Magnus Flyte
40 posts | 55 read | 51 to read
Cosmically fast-paced, wildly imaginative, and with City of Lost Dreamsthe bewitching sequelon shelves now, City of Dark Magic is the perfect potion of magic and suspense Once a city of enormous wealth and culture, Prague was home to emperors, alchemists, astronomers, and, as its whispered, hell portals. When music student Sarah Weston lands a summer job at Prague Castle cataloging Beethovens manuscripts, she has no idea how dangerous her life is about to become. Prague is a threshold, Sarah is warned, and it is steeped in blood. Soon after Sarah arrives, strange things begin to happen. She learns that her mentor, who was working at the castle, may not have committed suicide after all. Could his cryptic notes be warnings? As Sarah parses his clues about Beethovens Immortal Beloved, she manages to get arrested, to have tantric sex in a public fountain, and to discover a time-warping drug. She also catches the attention of a four-hundred-year-old dwarf, the handsome Prince Max, and a powerful U.S. senator with secrets she will do anything to hide. And the story continues in City of Lost Dreams, the mesmerizing sequel, which finds Sarah in the heart of Vienna, embroiled in a new web of mystical secrets and treacherous lies.

This is hard to describe. It mixes magic, time-bending, music, history, and a spy thriller set in Prague. It somehow all came together, and I enjoyed it. My first book finished for #20in4 relaxation. @Andrew65

This book was. A. TRIP. And not just because of the copious drug taking. Music and history and time travel (sort of) and love (maybe) and charm to the gills. Secrets and mysteries; sly agents and murder and mayhem. The characters weren‘t 100% likeable, which normally turns me off a book, but they and the story were compelling enough to keep going. Not sure if I want to go for the sequel or not… I want to put this somewhere between so-so and pick…

Another #tbrpile deep dive, keeping me company on my lunch break. I have a strong inkling that this one will be VERY entertaining…I mean, the cover quote alone… “This deliciously madcap novel has it all: murder in Prague, time travel, a misanthropic Beethoven, tantric sex, and a dwarf with attitude.”

Not sure why I waited so long😂

It was different than my usual like but I actually like historical stories so I found it very interesting!

1. I'm blanking! Off the top of my head, I don't think so, but I have a couple that I'd like to read.

2. Not much recently, but I've shared on Goodreads, Amazon, NetGalley, Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook.

3. Maybe the tagged book or The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon.

Consider yourself tagged if you want to play! #wondrouswednesday @eggs

A good one, but I wish there was more magic involved. It was a more of a mystery novel than a supernatural one, but still intriguing. This one qualifies for #bookspin and #screamatblon. Total points for #teamharkness and #scarathlon is 195. I‘ve been super behind in posting, so for #outstandingoctober, I hit both my goals of 24 hours and finished 3 books!

I'm joining @Andrew65 and sharing some of my favorite series.

Day 6: City of Dark Magic (complete)

The blurb on the cover by Conan O'Brien sums this up for me. "This deliciously madcap novel has it all: murder in Prague, time travel, a misanthropic Beethoven, tantric sex, and a dwarf with attitude."

This won't be for everyone, but it was wacky enough for me. An easy read but some sexual situations.

Nute I always thought that Magnus Flyte is a super cool name for an author. Do you think that is his real name? Even cooler if that is the name bestowed upon him by his parents! 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Nute Magnus Flyte is a fantastic name but sadly it is made up. It is actually two women writing as Magnus. 4y
Nute OMG! Made up name, but things just got a whole lot cooler with that little tidbit of information. Leave it to women to come up with a dope name like that!🙌🏽 4y
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Nute I'm sad that these are the only two book "he" wrote. They aren't literary masterpieces, tours-de-force, or unputdownable, but they were damn fun! Yay women! 4y

It's hard to narrow down (and might not have been 5 stars) but these were the first ones to come to mind:

1. City of Dark Magic by Magnus Flyte
2. The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon
3. Daisy Jones & the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid

I've been reading very slowly lately 🤔 Even this fast paced (and large print) book took me over a week...
Anyway, I did enjoy this one! Not perfect by any means, but a fun sort of mystery/almost action movie plot. It kind of reminded of the Da Vinci Code but more supernatural.

I'm also almost finally finished with Little Women! Only 150 pages left

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I never saw this cover before! 💛 I feel the same way about this book - not perfect, but fun! It stands out in my mind so I do recommend it often. 4y

If you‘re interested in Beethoven, this book is for you. Otherwise I was annoyed at the use of the word frisson and amazed at how much sex Sarah is getting. Plus I‘ve been to Prague and it never felt like it rested on a portal to hell to me

Okay. I make this a pick, however, it's not going to be for everyone. If you like Discovery of Witches, this is for you. There's fewer supernatural elements and less romance and more characters, but it's entertaining even in its erudite delivery. The time traveling device was AMAZING. I wish it had been shown more & earlier because it was riveting. I'll read the sequel in hopes there's more to come!

BethM I got this on sale years ago and have never read it. But I like DoW so maybe I'll have to move it up the list! 6y

The best thing I can say about this novel was I finished it. But I had to push myself to do so. My overall opinion is this book is a boring, hot mess.

#QuickBookQuiz
1. I haven‘t thought about it, but looking at my book shelves, I think it‘s about even.
2. 13 if I include the endorsement statement - but none in the title & only 1 in the author‘s name.
3. ? - can‘t think of one
4. Black seems to be predominate
5. Paula Hawkins
6. magic (because the name of the book is at the bottom of the odd number pages) - otherwise it‘s “curled”

Newest book club read. Even if I didn't think this book sounded amazing, I still would have read it based solely on the blurb from Conan O'Brien, "This deliciously madcap novel has it all: murder in Prague, time travel, a misanthropic Beethoven, tantric sex, and a dwarf with attitude. " ??

“Prague is a place where the fabric of time is thin.” This aptly suggests the magic and mystery wrapped up in this wholly entertaining tale. There is mystery, suspense, castles, Prague, a 400 year old dwarf, Beethoven, and sex. What more could you ask for? 😉

Serotonin My sister read this and enjoyed it! I actually have the first two volumes on my Kindle TBR - hahaha! I'll get to them someday 😉 7y

Falls somewhere in between the epic urgency of a real page turner and the trudging monotony of a snoozefest. Feels similar to A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. But with more drugs and Beethoven!

Bailedbailed

Was intrigued by the back cover and picked this up at a used bookstore. With promise of magic, mystery, and some musical history, I thought it be a cute, quick read. Just something in between more serious novels. However, the writing is confusing, amateurish, and not believable. Maybe later? Eh. 😒

BethFishReads I bailed too and gave the book away 8y
JPeterson @BethFishReads That will most likely will happen with my copy. If I had heard otherwise, to stick it out a bit farther, maybe I would try it again. But doesn't seem to be the case 8y

This book had a good opening and I enjoyed the main character initially. However once the handsome prince shows up she is ruled no longer by her studious nature but instead base female urges. The character is finally defined by this relationship. The sex scenes are annoying and ending is just bad.
