I‘m not quite sure what I just read! 😂 The bizarre title and kinda out-there premise caught my book club‘s eye and so we decided to give it a shot. I had fun discussing it with them but the story itself was a little all over the place. I didn‘t go in with very high expectations, and so I wasn‘t really disappointed. It was a quick, mostly enjoyable read, and the audiobook narrator was good. Not sure I‘ll continue on with the series, but who know!

Happy New Year! Here‘s a look at my 2019 stats! Audiobooks were my # 1 format again, and I beefed up my library check outs, which I‘m really happy about. My Sci-fi reading jumped up as my Fantasy reading went down from my 2018 stats. I didn‘t read as many Memoirs or Non-Fiction as 2018 either, but my general Fiction reading increased (in part to rereading almost all of the Austen books). We‘ll see what I feel like reading in 2020!

Pitched as Boyz n the Hood meets A Christmas Carol, this short book packs a punch. Lyrical. Powerful. Poignant. I love that it‘s written in verse and the author narrates the audiobook. I‘m definitely looking forward to reading more from Reynolds!

This book was fun! I haven‘t seen any of Wong‘s stand up specials, but I loved “Always Be My Maybe” on Netflix, and now I feel like I know all about her. Funny, at times gross, and at other times educational, this book was written as letters to her young daughters, which starts w/ a disclaimer for them to not read it until they‘re at least 21 lol. I‘d definitely recommend the audiobook and I‘ll be adding her stand up to my Netflix queue for sure!

Seekingtardis I love her stand up and I wasn‘t sure how the book would turn out but I am very glad to hear that it‘s good!! I‘ll be adding it to my list asap! 1mo

I found this YA paranormal thriller to be a painfully slow, confusing novel. I finished my library ebook hours before it was due; it shouldn‘t take me 21 days to get through a thriller. There were a few vaguely creepy parts, but nothing was all that scary, and I have a low threshold for scary things. The “twist” didn‘t make sense at all, and felt completely out of place. That type of twist wasn‘t earned and cheapened the rest of the book.

Merethebookgal (This next thought is kinda spoilery but not actually the twist) I feel like the twist was just like an updated version of “it was all a dream.” Anyway, I only finished it because it‘s a book club book, but if I‘d had my way, I would have DNF‘d this pretty early on. It‘s too bad, really, because the premise sounded cool. (edited) 2mo

So, so good! Compelling, educational, personal. I loved learning about these amazing women, their lives, and their important roles during WWII. I actually started googling some of their names because I wanted to put faces with names. I must admit, I couldn‘t always keep track of everyone with how the narrative skipped around, but it didn‘t take away from my enjoyment. And the audiobook narrator was great! Definitely would recommend!

I finished Schwab‘s first book a few days ago, and it‘s interesting to see how her writing has grown. The setting was an integral character in this book and it was very atmospheric. It took a few chapters to feel like I was in the story (probably because I listened to the audiobook) but then I just wanted to keep listening! Getting different points of view, especially from two of the “mean girls” helped them to seem more like real people, and not just one dimensional villains. (Not that it made the terrible things they did okay!) I‘m not usually into drama-filled stories, but I‘m definitely looking forward to book 2!

There There: A novel | Tommy Orange
post image
Pickpick

I just finished reading There There to hear Tommy Orange talk last night & I‘m feeling lots of feelings. It‘s thought-provoking, insightful, and brutally heartbreaking at times. It really brings to question what does it mean to be a Native American when you don‘t live on a reservation; what does it mean to be an “urban Indian?” I enjoyed all the different points of view, and the story behind the title is interesting (I‘ll put it in the comments)

Merethebookgal The title actually comes from a passage in an autobiography by Gertrude Stein, who grew up in Oakland and talked about how the place had changed so much that the “there” of her childhood, the “there there” was gone. The line is “There is no there there.” 3mo

Merethebookgal @Chrissyreadit A bunch of the surrounding counties in the Washington, DC area have an agreement with each other that residents of their counties can get library cards from the others, so it works like a normal library card with the same benefits. I love listening to Carrie Fisher‘s books via audio. This was such an interesting book! Having a tidally locked planet as the setting was different and add that to the themes of time, climate change, colonialism, the “alchemy of being seen,” and transformation was ambitious but done so well. There were many times I was disoriented, or it felt like the story dragged a bit, but I think that was the point. This is a super smart book that I‘d recommend if you‘re looking for a different type of story.
