Have you read Caraval? Opulent, delicious, un-put-downable? To be fair, some of the characters could have been more deeply fleshed out, and perhaps that happens in the next book. I simply devoured this one. If you like stylized YA Fantasy with a good helping of magical romance (f/m), then this is not a book to be missed. 😘🌹
A mixture of Night Circus, The Game starring Michael Douglas, and the Lotus Hotel from Percy Jackson, #Caraval is a story full of fun, magic, mystique, and intrigue. But there's a darkness there too, and a partial murder mystery. I know I'm late to the game with this series, but better late than never, right? I enjoyed this book much more than I had expected to and I'm going to buy the rest of the series as soon as I finish writing this review.
I can't help but feel really disappointed with Caraval - the premise sounded amazing, but everything fell flat for me. Nothing really felt fantastical or magical, and "the game" didn't make much sense. The characters were one-dimensional and not very interesting. I do wish I could see what everyone else does because I had high hopes and wanted to love it. I was tempted to read the second book for the hell of it, but think I'll give it a pass.
This was pretty good, though it made me think of the Night Circus, which to me is more well written. I found the main character frustrating and had to keep reminding myself that she was a kid who had been raised in an abuse-filled house, largely in solitude, which is why she seemed so naive. But the environment of the book was interesting, and the game aspect was also interesting. I don't know that I feel compelled to continue the series.
How was everyone‘s weekend? Our local beer fest was on so I spent the past couple of days drinking far too much ale! I‘m looking forward to a relaxed Sunday - hoping to smash through Caraval and drink lotsa coffee 😈☕️📚
#52 of my year & I‘m finally adventuring into this world. So far this year I have checked off several series that have been on my TBR for a long time and I‘m so proud!
Just finished the Caraval series, and I‘m taking suggestions on new #YAfantasy series. Some of my past favs are The Winner‘s Curse series, The Lunar Chronicles, and Shades of Magic series. I would also like for the series to be complete already. I hate having to wait for the final book to come out. What do you suggest, Litsy? #YA #Fantasy #summerreading
I tried I really did but I just could not stand Scarlet and it takes a lot for me to DNF a book. I might try reading the book to see if I like it but not yet.
So I started the Audiobook of Caraval today and so far it‘s okay but I am starting to get annoyed with Scarlet. I am finding her to be very whiny and I don‘t know if I am going to continue. Did anyone find the book version better? I am on Chapter 11 of the Audiobook.
Ok! I need opinions. The above mentioned title just didn't quite do it for me but I find myself being drawn to the 2nd and 3rd book....possibly just cause the covers are so pretty. Is it worth it? Do they get better???
The Fuzz, as always, is for attention.
Yet another book my aunt got me. This one I didn‘t like as much as some of the others. The main character was HIGHLY annoying throughout the novel, there was an insta-love, there wasn‘t really a setting, and Garber brushed off the magic rules by saying the characters didn‘t know the rules, so oh well! It felt like it was trying to be the YA Night Circus, and it just fell really short. 2/5
This book had so much potential and such an interesting premise but it really missed the mark by the end. The characterizations were so over the top and the motivations behind the decisions the characters made during the game were so confusing and overly complicated that it all ended up feeling pointless.
Decision made! Starting this tomorrow!
This is your first clue on the road to find her.
The others will not be so easy to retrieve.
Some will make you.....you‘re sanity and all that...eve.
Clue number two you‘ll discover in the rubble of her departure.
Number three you must earn.
Number four will cost you something valuable.
And number five requires a leap of faith.
Most of you will fail, but one will surely succeed.
You have five nights to find the four remaining clues.
Hope is a powerful thing.
Do you own any book related pillow cover? I have only one with this Caraval quote. It came a little demage😟 #februarycratephotochallenge Caraval sequins pillow cover- magical transformation! #litjoycrate #sharethelitjoy

Even though I‘ve had the physical book for awhile, I ended up doing the audio. I wanted to read this and Legendary before my preorder of Finale arrives from the UK. Now I‘m questioning it all. This was a little too scattered and confusing, and I didn‘t end up loving it. There was an interview with the author at the end of the audio where she said even she didn‘t know stuff as she was writing. Unfortunately, I think that was reflected in the story.
"Every person has the power to change their fate if they are brave enough to fight for what they desire more than anything."
Just finished my reread of #Caraval and I have to say, I enjoyed it much more this time. I think the first time my expectations were just too high which is why I was a little disappointed. ????
I love that #fairyloot is hosting readalongs in preparation for the last book in the series, #Finale, which comes out in May.
Honestly I think this book is a bit overrated. It's a sparkling YA fantasy stuffed full of dreamy descriptions and romance that glitters on the surface... and lacking in any real substance. All fur coat and no knickers, as my nan would say.
1. Caraval was a disaster, and would be more entertaining used as toilet paper than actually reading it.
3. Patricia Boyle, Sauny Williams; Stella Millen, Joseph Cicalese
4. I don't think I really had one. I'm more into music.
5⭐'s. Omg this was so good! Why did I wait so long to read this?! I need the next book like right now!
Caraval is absolutely magical. The characters are enticing and I just adored them! I would recommend anyone wanting a little magic in their lives to join Scarlett, Julian, and Tessa at Legend‘s Caraval. You won‘t regret it. 💕
I absolutely LOVED this book! It was truly magical. Reading it, I felt as though I was really a part of Caraval. There were some parts were my anxiety peaked and some parts where my intrigue soared.
Scarlett‘s need to care for her sister is so tremendous! She worries about it every step of the way. But you can feel her love for Tella and you don‘t doubt for a moment that she would literally die for her.
What are you reading this Saturday night? Getting some new bookmarks up, then planning on reading for a little bit before bed. Excited to show everyone the new bookmarks! As for the book, I picked this up on a recommendation by a blogger. Excited to read it since it is all over the internet and people seem to love it.
My first try reading this book was rough. I liked the world and the characters and the plot, but just couldn‘t get into it. I decided to try again, though, in preparation for reading Legendary, and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED it. This is definitely a book that you have to be in the mood for, you can‘t force your way through it, but if you are it is vivid and magical and captivating and mysterious and an overall great read. So excited for Legendary!!
I love this book so much. ❤️😅 usually I‘m pretty good at figuring out the twists of a book, but this one just kept my head spinning. I thought it would go one way, and it turned out the exact opposite. I‘m not one to reread many books, but I‘ll definitely be reading this one many more times!
“It came in cool shades of forget-me-not blue, which wrapped around her like evening fog, making her feel hidden enough to acknowledge that she wanted to experience more of Caraval‘s pleasures than she would ever have admitted out loud.”
I take my last final (which is prob & stats 😬) today, and I‘m nervous. 😅 Just getting in some last minute reading to calm the nerves so I can focus better. :)
I‘m so sorry I have been inactive on here! Life has been hectic and it‘s finals week at my college! Today has been the first day I got a moment to just relax! (And you know it‘s with a good book! 😉)
Here‘s my new adventure. :)
