Raina Telgemeier's #1 New York Times bestselling, Eisner Award-winning graphic memoir based on her childhood! Raina just wants to be a normal sixth grader. But one night after Girl Scouts she trips and falls, severely injuring her two front teeth. What follows is a long and frustrating journey with on-again, off-again braces, surgery, embarrassing headgear, and even a retainer with fake teeth attached. And on top of all that, there's still more to deal with: a major earthquake, boy confusion, and friends who turn out to be not so friendly.

I had some vicious orthodontia from ages 7-21, including various surgeries, so this incredible graphic memoir really resonated with me. (The scene where Raina is mashing her face into the couch cushions because it's the only thing that makes the pain better...literally me.) Loved it.

I see why this is a popular book amongst my scholars. @rainatelgemeier touches on a few topics that happens in middle everyday. The bullying, gossiping and teasing are hot takes for many of my scholars and showing them how to navigate through this and dealing with the growing pains of becoming a teenager can be a lot. #smile #rainatelgemeier #middleschool #middleschoolteacherwholovestoread

Oh this page! Late 80s and early 90s captured. I remember buying a bottle of Exclamation! And washing my face with noxzema nightly. I can still smell it. Loving this graphic novel of middle school in 89-91.

I love this book! This book helped me a lot when I had to get braces in high school, but would be a great read from third grade to freshmen year of high school to help kids who have to get braces and are a bit worried about it.

The book “Smile“ is written by Raina Telgemeier. I really liked this book so far. I really like the illustrations and the way that the words are laid out on the pages. I have seen several of my students read these books. I think that they are good coming of age books for middle school aged kids.

Smile, published in 2010 was such a cute read about someone not fitting in based on something she could not help. It showed how she got hurt in the story and then had to have many dentist appointments with braces and all. The cutest read about fitting in and standing out.

I see why it‘s such a popular book among tweens. The dental drama aside, there‘s a whole story about finding yourself and insisting on being treated well by friends (and if they won‘t, they‘re not friends) that a lot of kids can identify with. I really enjoyed this. It‘s for a slightly older reader than I thought, as Raina goes from 7-10th grades through the book.

5✨ I really enjoyed this story. It was suggested by my 12 year old niece to read this year. Junior high and high school are not easy. Raina not only was getting braces for an overbite, but she knocked her two front teeth out too! She had a lot of dental procedures in that time to make her teeth look normal again. This is a true story by the author that can help a lot of kids know what to expect. I need the next one immediately!

Smile, written by Raina Telgemeier is a super fun RF novel recommended for grades 3-5. Winner of the Eisner Award, this hilarious book, based on a TRUE story will have you rolling on the floor! Read as the author looses her front two teeth, and deals with the social aspect of it for years. Will she ever have perfect teeth again? Read to find out! #ucflae3414su20

ashleyshugars This cute story would best serve as a LC novel. Check out these awesome discussion questions to be used: https://www.scholastic.com/teachers/lesson-plans/teaching-content/discussion-que.... This would be perfect with UDL strategy 3.2 and ESOL strategy 2. 4y

#recommendsday #webtoons #graphicnovel

My 13 year old is looking for a new graphic novel to read. She has read Raina Telgemeier‘s books and enjoyed them. She is asking for recommendations based on her favorite Webtoons: Gourmet Hound, True Beauty, Castle Swimmer, Edith.

Help me out, littens! I don‘t know a lot of graphic novels. Anyone?

Purpleness Try Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy by Rex Ogle and maybe El Deafo by Cece Bell 4y
LibrarianRyan 5 Worlds (series), Akward (series), Cleopatra in Space, Castle in the Stars (series), Rapunzel revenge (series), Real Friends by Hale (series), Invisible Emmie (series that is half gn half novel), Tea Dragon Society, Cucumber Quest (Series), I have not read the webtoons you mentioned these are just some of the MG GN series that I like. 4y
CSeydel @Purpleness @LibrarianRyan Thanks! I asked her what she liked about her Webtoons and she said, the romance. Do any of the ones you mentioned have a romance aspect? I already requested Invisible Emmie from our online library and I‘ll look for the others! 4y

Loved the art, loved the story - even if it did bring back some traumatic memories of my own orthodontic experiences. Although to be fair now I‘ve finished I feel like I got off lightly with just headgear, train tracks, two extractions and various removable braces because compared to Raina that‘s nothing!

Smile by Raina Telgemeier is a NF graphic novel about a middle school girl who has to work through a personal crisis. After Girl Scout camp, Raina suffers a freak accident where she severely damages her two front teeth. This graphic novel follows Raina all through middle school to tenth grade as she struggles with friends, boys, and surgery. This is a great book to introduce as a IR to students about to enter middle school.

gabbymartin @apeacock12 I've never seen that award before! Nor have I heard of the book! It looks and sounds like something that would be perfect for a 5th grade independent read or even a literature circle, to promote discussion about personal crises which can really benefit the classroom at that age. Can't wait to check out this book! 5y

This website has a great lesson plan where students can create a graphic organizer. Students will be asked to create a web of when someone may be feel embarrassed, angry, or uncomfortable. This book and lesson can be used to satisfy ESOL strategy 7 and UDL 5.2.
