Here‘s another fox story. 🦊

“Because I am exactly where I should be, doing exactly what I should be doing. That is peace.”

The story of a boy who is being pressured to abandon his pet fox, and their struggles to return to each other, and in the process, discover themselves. Told in alternating narratives between the boy and the fox, it‘s an #animal story with a difference, for older children or adult alike.

Not what I expected from a middle grades hit at all! This is definitely the most literary novel I‘ve ever read for that age range. Slow, quiet, and emotionally wrenching, I‘ve continued to think about this for days after finishing. Michael Curran-Dorsano is an excellent narrator as well if you‘re considering the audiobook!

A moving story of the extraordinary friendship between a boy and his fox, and their epic journey to be reunited. Beautifully illustrated by multi-award winner, Jon Klassen. Pax was only a kit when his family was killed and he was rescued by ‘his boy‘, Peter.

#ANewChapter Day 7: While I loved reading this story, I am not sure how much this would resonate with a lot of restless, young readers, impatient for the next #BiggestPlotTwist or quick adventure. Yet, I did find this novel to be somewhat quick-paced, while at the same time there was also a lingering quality that enabled the reader to sit still for a moment, and calm one‘s restlessness. I read this book with my 7 year old son and we give it two thumbs up!
A young boy leaves his pet fox in the woods when he goes to live with his grandfather while his father is away at war. The book is about the journey both the boy and the fox make to get back to each other 💙

Wife How would this be for a 5-yr-old? 9mo

I listened to this book and loved it. I was expecting to cry as I usually do with animal books, but I miraculously did not. Just the text alone was beautiful, but I look forward to re-reading it with the pictures.

Intellectually: Pick
Emotionally: So-So

As someone who has never had a pet or been emotionally connected to an animal in a significant way, this book was hard for me to relate to. I kept getting distracted by subplots like Peter's dad & why there was a war going on, instead of being invested in Peter & Pax.

On the whole though, the book was very well written & I can see the value of having kids read it. It teaches some very important themes.

Started a new read-aloud today. We only read the flap copy before the kids announced, “Mom‘s gonna cry in this one!” I have a bit of a history. And they were proven correct before we even finished the grueling first chapter. Peter has go live with his grandfather while his dad goes to war, so his father makes him abandon Pax in the woods. Pax just thought they were playing a game. 😭😭😭

(Quote on p. 5; I made it to “careless” before sniffling.)

Moray_Reads A lovely story and a gorgeous book. Have you seen the binding underneath the dust jacket? So pretty 😍 1y
TheWordJar @Moray_Reads I usually take the dust jacket off when I read hardcovers, but I hadn‘t with this one yet. I just peeked underneath, and it is adorable! I love that they are running to each other from the covers. So sweet! 1y

batsy I have this one and have been putting it off because I know I'll be snivelling 😢😢😢 1y
TheWordJar @TrishB Man, that first chapter! 😭 It was tough. But I‘ve read ahead of the kids a bit now, and I‘ve actually laughed out loud in places, so hopefully it will be a nice balance! 1y
TheWordJar @batsy Tears for me in the first chapter. That was a first! But there have also been a few lighthearted moments as well now. The chapters alternate between Pax‘s and Peter‘s POV, and I absolutely adore how the author is writing Pax. 1y
batsy Oh, that sounds better! I knew it would be a moving story based on reviews but it's good that there is lightness and levity, as well. 1y

I loved this #MGNovel! I could not put it down! Like so many boy and his dog/horse/whatever-kind-of-animal stories, it covers some heavy themes about love, loss, duty, and, interestingly enough, the costs of war and the interconnectedness of everything. I liked how the fox‘s point of view made up half of the story, showing the importance of the theme of “two but not two” as part of the story format itself.

Not a book for my young kids - heavy themes. I enjoyed it, especially the storyline with Vola, the woman in the woods. I could envision her in a separate adult novel. This isn‘t a classic ala Where the Red Fern Grows or The Red Pony, but it does make your heart heavy. I liked the “two but not two” theme. 👌🏾

I read this aloud to my 7 and 9 yr old daughters. It was a lot more serious and deep than I was expecting. I don't think my younger daughter got much out of it, but the older did. She's an animal lover and was enthralled by the Pax chapters (the chapters alternated btw the boy's storyline and the fox's). The ending had her in tears. If I had known it was so much about war and other dark issues, I would have waited. But I'm still giving it a pick.
