7 posts | 7 read | 1 reading | 8 to read
From bestselling author Laura Zigman comes a heartfelt novel about two offbeat and newly divorced sisters who move in together as adultsand are finally forced to reckon with their childhood losses A year after her divorce, Joyce is settling into being single again. She likes her job archiving family photos and videos, and shes developed a secret comforting hobby: trolling the neighborhood social networking site, Small World, for posts that help solve lifes easiest problems. When her older sister Lydia, also divorced, calls to tell her shes moving back east from Los Angeles after almost thirty years away, Joyce invites Lydia to move into her Cambridge apartment. Temporarily. Just until she finds a place of her own. But their unlikely co-habitationnot helped by annoying new neighbors upstairs--turns out to be the post-divorce rebound relationship Joyce hadnt planned on. Instead of forging the bond that she always dreamed of having with Lydia, their relationship frays. And they rarely discuss the loss of their sister Eleanor, who was significantly disabled, and died when she was only ten years old. When new revelations from their familys history come to light, will those secrets further split them apart, or course-correct their connection for the future? Written with wry humor and keen sensitivity, Small World is a powerful novel of grief and hope a reminder that sometimes you have to look back in order to move ahead.

Bailedbailed

I really do hate to DNF when I‘m this close to the end but I can‘t. I think people know that people with intellectual disabilities where once referred to as something else and when authors use the “r-word” I usually bail right away. The author decided this needed to be explained. So I gave this a pass at the beginning, the author has now used this word at least six times and I can‘t let it go. If your job is words, choose a different word. ⤵️

Prairiegirl_reading On top of that these characters were SO immature! It made me angry. 6mo

And yet: reacting feels involuntary. As long as we‘re both breathing, we‘ll probably forever misread each other‘s faces; second-guess and misinterpret each other‘s thoughts, feelings, and motives in the worst possible way 👭

Pickpick

This one was a soft pick for me. I found it easy to read and the mix of heartwarming moments and funny moments made it a quick read for me.

The two sisters are a bit eccentric and their relationship felt genuine. The storyline from their childhood was stronger than the present day. Also, I enjoyed the ads turned into poems. Although I'm not sure they added much to the story, I still found them entertaining.

Mehso-so

This has some past family issues- living with a disabled sister and those effects on their family- and current issues with 2 sisters living together after 30 years. I wanted to like the sisters more which would have improved my overall impression of the book. Great idea for a book, some good plot lines, but slightly off the mark for me.

Pickpick

I had never read Zigman before, and after finishing this, I‘ve already started another title from her backlist! She‘s at my sweet spot between hilarious and heartwarming. 💜

Middle-aged sisters Joyce and Lydia have just moved in together after each divorcing. They‘re still dealing with losing their third disabled sister as children and the effect her death had on their mother. Will new, New Age neighbors divide these sisters or bring them closer?

squirrelbrain Sounds great! I‘ve not read any by this author before either - stacked. 1y
