I heard about the Sirens conference here on Litsy last year so I just wanted to let you know I came, I conquered the Colorado altitude, and I am enjoying every minute!

A sassy half-Indian, half-black girl who identifies as a boy has her eyes opened to a mysterious Wild West full of mythical creatures + monsters preying on unsuspecting humans. Nettie finds her calling fighting these evils alongside Rangers & skinwalkers. Lots of action/adventure + great characters & surprising creatures. I love that this is my second book recently with the message that you don't have to be what others tell you to be. PICK!

So I enjoy a good map at the start of a book, but I assumed some of the items on this one (dwarfs, roc aerie, cockatrice infestation) were an amusing case of 'here be dragons' - but after surviving the chupacabra territory and tackling a Siren, I can only assume the rest (satyrs, wyverns, sasquatch!) are all real and will be appearing at some point!

After reading NK Jemisin's The Broken Earth trilogy, and Octavia Butler's Kindred, I needed a light romp with a middle grade novel. And what a delight! I've never seen the movie, but I assume the book is better. 😜 #womenauthors #middlegradenovels #sirensreadingchallenge

I now understand why I've heard this novel should be placed among literary classics. In a nutshell: A black woman finds herself mysteriously tied to her white slave-owning ancestor. She finds herself leaving her time period for his whenever his need is great. She not only witnesses history, but takes part in moving it along. A powerful and thought provoking story. #diverseauthors #scifi #fantasy #sirensreadingchallenge

You know how some books take a little while to get going? This is not one of those! By the end of paragraph 2, I am fully invested in this strange wild west with dark scary magical monsters and my undervalued main character with her sassy narrative voice. Consider me IN this...

While I was attracted to the premise of a magical mistress of spices and the way this is absolutely packed with a mix of cultures and immigrant stories, the overly poetic language simply got in the way for me. I say this knowing perfectly well that is exactly what others may love! So decide how you feel about flowery poetics and a few plot holes, and then dive in.

What is this feeling? Oh, THIS is what it feels like to read a life-changingly fantastic book.
I really can't put words to how amazing and masterful this book is. It's farther out of my comfort zone than I thought - more scifi/speculative fiction and tough to read than my usual, and it has rearranged my brain with its beyond belief greatness.
Socks, blown OFF.
And advice for any & all - have book 2 ready. #sirensreadingchallenge
