Behold the Dreamers | Imbolo Mbue
post image
Pickpick

An emotional rollercoaster of a story that gives the reader a glimpse into immigrants‘ lives. Mbue does a great job of sharing each character‘s point of view. I finished it last night at 11:55 at night...I just couldn‘t put it down. Needless to say, I am a bit tired today. We also had our first snow of the season during the night.

TheBookAddict @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks yes, they are. We are lucky to live in a place surrounded by big beautiful trees. 😊 🌳 🌳💕 3w
Cathythoughts I loved this book ❤️. And I love my country but I wish we had snow too 3w
TheBookAddict 🙌🏽 💕📖💕 Where are you from? It‘s very pretty to look at and enjoy when you can be at home or if you like to be out playing in it, but it‘s not that great when you have to drive in it. 😔 3w

Might as well read while we wait for the class to show up, since everything else is done.

Cathythoughts Loved this one 4w
TheBookAddict @Cathythoughts I am enjoying it so far. I‘m not that far into it, but I‘m already bracing myself for what feel is coming. It‘s making me hurt for what will probably happen to Jende and Neni, all they want is a better life for themselves and their children. 💕💕💕 4w

How to Be an Antiracist | Ibram X. Kendi
post image
Pickpick

This book is effective at unpacking the details of racism, anti-racism, and all of the dreaded middle ground terms like colorblind and “not racist.” Kendi makes a strong and intersectional case. Now that I‘ve listened to it front->back, I will keep it for future reference. His chapters are organized so you can easily just grab parts.

BarbaraTheBibliophage The content is amazing, but I‘m mixed about his narration. Sometimes his passionate delivery worked for me, but other times it just felt strident and like he was yelling at me. YMMV (edited) 2mo
Amandajoy I was thinking about getting this on audible, but sounds like I may enjoy it in print better. Thank you. 2mo

Wow...It hit me in the feels. Marcus Vega, a middle school kid, has a lot on his plate. He loves his brother and his mother, who works really hard to make ends meet. When things get a bit out of hand his mom decides to take her family to visit family in PR. She‘s trying to spend time with her boys and regroup, but Marcus‘ focus is on finding his father who left them 10 yrs ago.

Enjoyed this #YA #QPoC read. I usually don‘t read romance, but I liked this one. I couldn‘t stop reading so I didn‘t go to bed until 4am this morning 🤦🏽‍♀️. I liked that it was natural and normal to be queer in Bird‘s community. It wasn‘t about the turmoil of Bird accepting who he was, it was about him coming to terms with the unpredictability of life, of him letting himself love and be loved, and coming to terms with loss. #diversereads

Definitely a #mustread. A wonderful story about doing what‘s right and finding your voice to speak up for yourself even when hope seems lost.
