#TOB24 Longlist is here! I‘m a few days late in the news, but so excited to see all the books. These are the ones I‘ve read so far and not a dud in the bunch. Looking forward to seeing 👀 what makes the cut!!

BarbaraBB Such exciting times! You‘ve read 11 already. I am trying to catch up on a few before the announcement of the shortlist! 5mo
squirrelbrain You‘ve read quite a lot already! 5mo

3/5 ⭐️ a cute little story that made me chuckle. I loved that funky chicken, Charles Dickens!

Using my emergency chocolate bookmark with this one 🙂 the colors kinda match the book cover/back! 🍫🍫🍫

RavenclawOwlCat Thanks! I just found the image online and printed it out, cut it and pasted it onto card stock! @WorldsOkayestStepMom @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks (edited) 11mo

From an adult reader's perspective, this is just another opportunity to feast the eyes on Eric Carle's art, and I will happily take any opportunity to do so.

Seriously, how do you not fall in love with Eric Carle's command of colour?! 🐓

#BookReport 01/23

In this first week I read two #TOB contenders. I liked the tagged one but both aren‘t worth the Rooster imo. The Finlay was delicious: suspenseful and filled with twists. Overall a good start of the year!

squirrelbrain There are so many books that we don‘t think deserve the Rooster! 😬 1y
Cinfhen Agreed about the #Rooster and the Finlay 1y
Megabooks 💯💯💯💯 1y

Rissreads What is this rooster?🐔 1y
BarbaraBB @Rissreads It is the prize for winning the Tournament of Books (#tob23) that‘ll start in March. 1y
Rissreads So next question is 🤣 What is the #tob23 please? 1y
BarbaraBB @Rissreads It is a tournament in which sixteen books compete with each other. A couple of us read those books and choose their own winner. I‘ll add the announcement: https://themorningnews.org/article/the-2023-tournament-of-books-shortlist-and-ju... 1y
Rissreads It sounds interesting! Go the rooster! 1y

Esther says, “Sure, I will pose with the dang book.” I started with the eBook from Libby, then I got a notice that my hold from the library of a physical copy was due for pickup. Yep, large print! 😁

Suet624 Glad to see the final list. That long list is daunting! 1y
Ruthiella Yahoo! I‘ve only read one. 😭😂 1y
Megabooks I‘ve read most of them, but I still have a few to go. Pretty happy with their choices but some of my favorites aren‘t there (search, cyclorama, flight, now is not the time to panic) interesting field! 1y

kwmg40 The announcement made my day! I‘ve started reserving the books at my library. 1y
Hooked_on_books Such an exciting day! I think they came up with an interesting mix of books. I can‘t wait to dig in! 1y
BarbaraBB Very exciting!! 1y
squirrelbrain You‘re right @Suet624 - the (very) longlist is a bit long! 🤣 1y
BkClubCare @Hooked_on_books - yay! And so I missed you on initial tagging. 1y
BkClubCare @Ruthiella - I am going to utilize a more relaxed “if it is to be” attitude and not get too crazed on trying to read them all! (I hope) 1y
BkClubCare @kwmg40 - the first move I made was to see if it was posted here! Just making sure anyone who might be interested knows about. 1y
BkClubCare @Megabooks - Noted. I already have Cyclorama and the Wilson on my must-read. I also just started the Hannaham but it is not what one would call holiday upbeat reading 😳 1y
Cinfhen Why SUCH a longlist to cut it down to so few???? @squirrelbrain @Suet624 I‘m not wild about their shortlist 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1y
BkClubCare @Cinfhen - no one quite knows how they choose the longlist nor the shortlist. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y

Here are my suggestions for this year‘s #camptob. I went with nonfiction published in 2022 both because they will not be eligible for the actual #rooster and because I loved the year they did nonfiction for camp. #camptob22

Chelsea.Poole Oh I love your nonfiction choices! I adore NF and didn‘t know if we could select it for camp. I‘m a noob at #ToB! Really looking forward to 2y
thebluestocking @Chelsea.Poole I love NF too! It may not be what they were looking for, but they said they wanted to shake it up and not have books that would otherwise be in the actual tournament. 🤷‍♀️ 2y

Cinfhen I‘m soooo excited you chose to focus on NF!!!! 2y
vivastory That's a good idea about NF. I almost included the following on my list 2y
squirrelbrain Great idea to choose NF and some great choices! It‘s all new to me too @Chelsea.Poole so I didn‘t know they‘d had NF in the past either. 2y
Ruthiella Fantastic idea! I would love it if this were the real list. I don‘t read enough Nonfiction and need challenges like this to encourage me. 2y
Amiable Love the suggestion for NF. Because I love NF. Currently reading “Ancestor Trouble” right now, in fact! 2y
BarbaraBB I love that you went with NF. It would make me go completely out of my comfort zone but I‘d love that. 2y
ReadingEnvy Great idea! I nominated 5 novels I already had eARCs of. 🤭 2y
merelybookish That would be an excellent way to keep the two tourneys separate! And I'm dying to read Ancestor Trouble. I'm also curious about The 90s although worried the nostalgia might kill me. 🙈 2y
Megabooks Great choices! I‘d like a NF option. 2y

Setting out for his uncle's wedding in this cumulative tale from multiple Latin American traditions, Rooster is confronted with a quandary when he comes across an appetizing kernel of corn. Should he eat the kernel, even though it will make his beak muddy, and therefore ruin his appearance?

I found this an enjoyable tale, and was reminded of many other such cumulative stories, in which a series of exchanges or other interactions become necessary.
