Night Shift
Night Shift | Alex Finlay
From the author of the breakout thriller Every Last Fear, comes Alex Finlay's electrifying next novel The Night Shift, about a pair of small-town murders fifteen years apart--and the ties that bind them. One of the Best or Most Anticipated Books of 2022: Newsweek - PopSugar - E! News - Goodreads - Book Riot - BookBub - The Nerd Daily - SheReads - Novel Suspects - Crime by the Book - London Times A Library Reads Selection--Best Book Voted By Librarians for March 2022 "The night was expected to bring tragedy." So begins one of the most highly-anticipated thrillers in recent years. It's New Year's Eve 1999. Y2K is expected to end in chaos: planes falling from the sky, elevators plunging to earth, world markets collapsing. A digital apocalypse. None of that happens. But at a Blockbuster Video in New Jersey, four teenagers working late at the store are attacked. Only one inexplicably survives. Police quickly identify a suspect, the boyfriend of one of the victims, who flees and is never seen again. Fifteen years later, more teenage employees are attacked at an ice cream store in the same town, and again only one makes it out alive. In the aftermath of the latest crime, three lives intersect: the lone survivor of the Blockbuster massacre who's forced to relive the horrors of her tragedy; the brother of the fugitive accused, who's convinced the police have the wrong suspect; and FBI agent Sarah Keller who must delve into the secrets of both nights--stirring up memories of teen love and lies--to uncover the truth about murders on the night shift. Twisty, poignant, and redemptive, The Night Shift is a story about the legacy of trauma and how the broken can come out on the other side, and it solidifies Finlay as one of the new leading voices in the world of thrillers.

My first thriller by Alex Finlay and definitely an author I‘d read again. Audio was a mixed bag…it‘s a multi cast narration but one of the readers had this annoying over exaggerated tone which drove me bonkers!!! Still a great #twisty plot told in #DualTimeLines - I loved the 1999 Blockbuster setting - #BeKindRewind

BarbaraBB Good to know. I loved his 1y
Cinfhen Im definitely going to add that one for next year @BarbaraBB 1y
Megabooks I liked ELF better, and the narration was better too, but this was definitely enjoyable. Great review! 1y

Needed a breather from some of my heavier nonfiction reads. This is fun so far! #DualTimeLines a copycat killing? 15 years since a murder took place at a NJ Blockbuster, 4 teens were killed only one survived. Now 4 teens are killed at an icecream parlor one town away and again there‘s a sole survivor.

BarbaraBB Ooh sounds good!! 1y
Cinfhen It‘s the right type of seasonal thriller @BarbaraBB with some really solid twists!!! So far I‘d recommend 1y

Wow…. Not disappointed at all with Alex Finlay‘s second book. He‘s going to be on my auto buy list from now on. Very similar to Ever Last Fear with a little timeline hopping and a tragedy. I loved it! So good. 🌟🌟🌟🌟

BarbaraBB I was on the fence about this one but your review convinced me. Stacked! 2y

I don‘t read a lot of thrillers - but once I heard massacre at Blockbuster - I was like, yes I need to read this immediately ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The first major twist had me like ? but subsequent twists and timeline reveals had me like ???

I wasn‘t even in the vicinity of working out who did it - which is an interesting change of pace for someone who usually has more of a clue ?️‍♀️

This was a good weekend/summer read. It‘s well paced and twisty. Not totally believable but who needs that in a thriller? I thought it was going to be scarier but it wasn‘t too bad!

This was my #BookSpin for June.

Wow. I really enjoyed this one! I usually don‘t love thrillers because I can usually figure out what is happening within the first 100 pages, but it wasn‘t like that with this one. I really like the timeline, the characters, and the writing! I felt the ending was a little rushed, but alas!

On New Year's Eve '99 the crew on the closing shift at a Blockbuster are murdered, leaving one survivor. The main suspect flees & is not seen again after being released for insufficient evidence. Fifteen years later a similar event happens at an ice cream parlor, leading many to think that the murderer has returned. Having worked at Blockbuster from 97-98, I have a bit of a soft spot for that connection with the novel. Although not as clever or👇

vivastory well-constructed as his previous novel, & I found myself frequently exasperated by some of the teen characters, (although TBF I am sometimes exasperated by teens IRL, too, so kudos for the realism) I still enjoyed this one.. (edited) 2y
Prairiegirl_reading I also worked at blockbuster around that time! 2y

Audiobook pick:
This was a decent thriller with some unexpected turns. The narrators weren't my favorite though. I might have enjoyed reading this one more.
