This is listed as a romance, but I feel like it‘s much more than that. This book is much more emotional than I usually read. It‘s a #soldiersstory, plus has a character that has muscular dystrophy and one that is being abused. I liked the way the story began before the solider went to war, spent a little time with him during the war and then mostly focused on the aftermath and dealing with tragedy. #booked2019

4thhouseontheleft Good pick for this prompt! 5d
Cinfhen Sounds like you found a perfect pick 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 5d

Such a vivid story - I felt I was sitting with the characters. Meditations on : dying without reconciliation , immunity to violence, love , youth & old age ... war ... 5⭐️ Soldiers Story

A bit #MoreMehThanYeah. While I did like the setting and premise of the book, it was just a bit too boring to really wow me. The characters felt flat, and some parts moved way too quickly, while others were way too slow.

I‘m counting this as my #SoldiersStory for #Booked2019, since the MC is serving out his compulsory military service for most of the book.

TrishB I‘m probably going to wait for an offer on this one. Curious but can definitely wait! 2w
Cathythoughts I was going to let it go ... but #SoldiersStory is a book I need to tick 🤔 (edited) 2w
Cinfhen I‘ve seen lots of mixed reviews 2w

Kalalalatja @Cathythoughts it is relatively short, if that helps 🤷‍♀️ @TrishB @Cinfhen definitely a #borrownotbuy or a cheap kindle deal. It wasn‘t bad, but it wasn‘t great either 2w
TrishB @Cathythoughts I really recommend this one for soldiers story 2w
Cathythoughts @TrishB thanks ! I just took a screenshot of your suggestion- I‘ve never read John Boyne.. so maybe it‘s time to give him a go 👍🏻 2w
Cinfhen Thanks, Katja 👍🏻 2w

Odette Sansom deserves to be more well known. After volunteering in WWII she was sent into occupied France where she successfully ran missions until betrayed by a member of her unit. Imprisoned & tortured by the Gestapo & was eventually sent to Ravensbruck concentration camp, put in a dark isolation cell & left to die. She survived all of it & was the most decorated spy of WWII #NonFiction2019 #SomethingInspirational #Booked2019 #SoldiersStory

Riveted_Reader_Melissa Stacking! That sounds excellent, and definitely like someone we should all know more about. 3w
Cinfhen Sounds great!! Thanks for posting & sharing ♥️ 3w

Henreich Böll is a gifted writer, there is no doubt about that. I enjoyed this more from the historical perspective and context of its publishing. A posthumous publication, German publishers were not ready to publish a novel set in the days immediately following Capitulation, when this was written in the late 40‘s. The storyline was very unstructured which made it hard to follow at times.

4thhouseontheleft Many of the scenes are set in various locations in a Catholic Church and hospital, so I‘m counting this for #pop19 : set in abbey, cloister, monastery, vicarage or convent. Nuns and priests factor in heavily in the story. This was the popsugar prompt I had no idea what I was going to read for it, so 🎉🎉🎉🎉. 3w
4thhouseontheleft This is also a perfect fit for the fall #booked2019 prompt #soldiersstory 🎉🎉 @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage since the main character is Hans, who deserted the Nazi Army and his struggles surviving without being punished as a deserter, even after the war ends. 3w
Cinfhen Oh yay!! A #DoubleDip 🍦🍦 3w
BarbaraTheBibliophage Nice job and review! 3w

I'd never heard of this book until @Centique and @ReadingEnvy disused it on jenny's podcast recently. I'll finish it tomorrow and review it but i keep reading bits i want to share and this stood out. It is an incredible story which captures the voice of a soldier experiencing horrors which seem alarmingly routine with astonishing skill.

Centique I‘m so glad you‘re enjoying it! 1mo
ReadingEnvy Wow that is vivid indeed 1mo
Cathythoughts Very good. I might read for #soldiersStory ... beautiful writing 1mo
