As I‘ve mentioned, I have appreciated Carter for years. I especially loved Vanity Fair when he was editor from 1992-2017. So I am partial to enjoying this book. If you didn‘t get to experience the brilliance of the writers & articles in VF you probably won‘t like this. Everyone he talks about is familiar to me, it feels a bit gossipy, and really ramps up halfway through. The money spent! The parties orchestrated! And Trump and his short fingers!

dabbe Another thing we have in common! I ADORE Graydon Carter and subscribed to VANITY FAIR the entire time he was editor. Dominick Dunne, Christopher Hitchens, the Proust Questionnaire, .... L♥️VE! #stacked 3d
Suet624 @dabbe LOL. YES! I‘m embarrassed to admit that my children knew better than to open up that plastic cover that the magazine came in. It was my one present to myself every month and I wanted to be the one to open up that package. so many great writers, so many great photos. There really was nothing else like it. 3d
dabbe @Suet624 I've even bought all of the big picture books from that era, especially the OSCAR ones. I loved how meaty the magazine was, too. The articles were in depth and LONG! The ads were gorgeous! Now, it's quite sad.

Suet624 @dabbe exactly! Carter mentions in the book that the magazines were 400 pages, including the ads. The current magazine is a far cry from that. 3d

My son & I picked it up today, & fell into the rabbit wholeheartedly into the rabbit hole of contemporary composer Eric Whitacre. We listened to his rendition of Lux Aurumque,or Light and Gold, based on a poem by the poet Edward Esce.Whitacre said of this poem: [whose] “genuine, elegant simplicity…[means] “A simple approach was essential to the success of the work, and I waited patiently for the tight harmonies to shimmer and glow.”His chorus shines.

Lcsmcat @kspenmoll You‘re welcome! There‘s a women‘s choir version of it that my husband does with his women‘s choir. I like that version even better, but couldn‘t find it quickly. 6d

#FridayHappyReadingHour a day late so it‘s more like Saturday happy hour 😬, but it‘s getting cosy now. Wine and black Moroccan olives. I finished reading Astray for Bookclub and I would highly recommend. Haunting short stories, memorable, beautifully written. People whose lives and fortunes have gone astray one way or another. Loosely based on true stories.
Happy weekend x

I annotated the shizz out of this book, and it brought me back to my days of teaching The Crucible, focusing on the harmful power of fear and how quickly people‘s common sense can be swept away and replaced with rumor-fueled hysteria. There‘s a lot to be said about the way the world treats our girls, especially those with grit and courage. The cover is perfection; this reading experience has been perfection. Loved every minute.

JenlovesJT47 @dabbe yes!!! He and Cary Grant are my 2 faves from Old Hollywood. I fell in love with Mr. Holden watching this episode long before I started watching classic movies. He was a great actor. 3mo
JenlovesJT47 @lil1inblue me too! They‘re the best ♥️♥️♥️ 3mo
lil1inblue @JenlovesJT47 I was just looking for something to watch, too. I think I'll hit Lucy up. 🥰 3mo
dabbe @JenlovesJT47 And so damn sexy... just like Cary. I loved him in SABRINA, and I loved that he was with Stefanie Powers at the end of his life (adore her in HART TO HART). 3mo
JenlovesJT47 @dabbe I LOVE Sabrina. They were in love with each other during the filming and he was going to leave his wife for her but he had had a vasectomy and Audrey wanted children. There‘s a really good book about it 3mo
JenlovesJT47 @lil1inblue can‘t go wrong with Lucy! There‘s an I Love Lucy channel on Pluto which is free, plays 24/7 so I have it on quite frequently. ♥️♥️♥️ 3mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Current front runner for my best nonfiction read of 2025. This is going to piss you off, but it‘s an important read, so please I urge you to pick it up. So many scandals. These companies DO NOT CARE. They just don‘t. Please also add Empire of Pain by the incredible Patrick Radden Keefe to your TBR, if you haven‘t read it yet.

#coverlove

Amiable Reading this right now! And I wholeheartedly second your recommendation of “Empire of Pain” —that is a fabulous, infuriating read. 3mo
