White Priory Murders: A Mystery for Christmas
White Priory Murders: A Mystery for Christmas | Carter Dickson
4 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 3 to read
James Bennett has been invited to stay at White Priory for Christmas among the retinue of the glamorous Hollywood actress Marcia Tait. Her producer, her lover, the playwright for her next hit and her agent are all here, soon to become so many suspects when Tait is found murdered on a cold December morning in the lakeside pavilion. Only the footprints of her discoverer disturb the snow which fell overnight - and which stopped just shortly after Marcia was last seen alive. How did the murderer get in and out of the pavilion without leaving a trace? When Bennett's uncle, the cantankerous amateur sleuth Sir Henry Merrivale arrives from London to make sense of this impossible crime, the reader is treated to a feast of the author's trademark twists, beguiling false answers and one of the most ingenious solutions in the history of the mystery genre.

Mehso-so

A locked room mystery in winter is usually my kind of thing but this had a cast of unpleasant male characters & an undertone of misogyny that was ick. The mystery was not outstanding, although I admit the writing kept me interested. Being among male characters who either become violent or enamoured in the presence of beautiful women was not fun. Disappointing. I read this for the "classic mystery" prompt for #CloakAndDaggerChristmas @Ruthiella

Tamra Oh shoot. 😒 I do love the covers of this series though. 2y
batsy @Tamra I know! These covers get me every time 😆 2y
Ruthiella That is disappointing. ☹️ Simon Thomas, on the recent podcast episode #103 Tea or Books? was noticing that these kind of reissue series won‘t republish books that are racist, but misogyny is still “acceptable” apparently. Interesting that. 2y
batsy @Ruthiella Tbh, a good portion of golden age mysteries or books from this era in general will have a combination of all of it, which is a bummer to think about for sure. 2y

Pickpick

Impossible crime with no solution? Not for Sir Henry Merrivale! An excellently constructed plot with multiple solutions put forth by almost everyone involved, each one an attempt to accuse, cover-up, or mislead. The clueing is stellar, the impossible portion of the story so simple, yet so elegant. Perfect mix of atmosphere, toxic personalities, red-herring and clueing. Definitely did not disappoint and is well worth the read. September #bookspin
