Moonstone | Wilkie COLLINS

Well, it's not the 300+ that I read last year, but I'm still quite pleased. The Moonstone was a great one to finish the challenge with. So, what has my reading year been like? I spent quite a bit of time with mysteries (Dublin Murder Squad #2-6 & the first 3 Cormoran Strike), I read several classics this year that immediately became all-time favorites (Northanger Abbey, Crime & Punishment, Great Expectations) & several astonishing contemporary 👇

vivastory works that are destined to become classics (Half of a Yellow Sun, House of Leaves, The Blazing World, Song of Achilles). I read a lot of titles that have been on my TBR for years, & they did not disappoint. I participated in several enlightening, fantastic buddy reads ( #littleraskols The Blazing World, Confederacy of Dunces, Les Mis) & read mostly backlist titles. A good year! 5y

Hey, #LittleRaskols, does this passage remind you of Raskolnikov‘s dream in Crime & Punishment? I don‘t remember if there was a footnote to reference the poem mentioned here in The Brothers Karamazov.

vivastory Absolutely reminds me of Raskolnikov's nightmare. I was immensely disturbed by the dream. This is a powerful quote. 6y

saresmoore @vivastory I was disturbed by it, too. The discussion goes into descriptions of even more abominable violence from there, in The Brothers. Whereas C&P felt almost surreal in its anguish, TBK is jarring in its realism (albeit still with plenty of melodrama). 6y

batsy Yup, it totally did. And I found this passage so hard to read, how Dostoevsky doesn't just "psychologize"(?) people but animals too, so you really feel for them. 6y

Moray_Reads Definitely. I'm not up to this part yet, I may have to skim it carefully, the passage in C&P was bad enough! 😖 6y

saresmoore @batsy It was so hard to read and it just kept getting worse! When Ivan started talking to Alyosha about loving children, I immediately thought about Lise 😝 and it was all downhill from there... @Moray_Reads I think you could get away with skimming all of book 5, chapter 4. 6y

LauraBeth What I noticed about Quixote was that the description and characterization of DQ‘s and Sancho‘s donkeys seemed to reflect their owners. And when Sancho muses on Dapple, he‘s actually musing on himself. 🤔 I‘m not sure what my point is though 😂 6y

saresmoore @LauraBeth Probably the same as Dostoevsky‘s! That we tend to project our emotions, triumphs, shortcomings, even (and maybe especially) our aggressions onto those beasts who are closest to us. I think it‘s sort of fascinating! 6y

All if the recent talk of #Russia literature has me eager to read Dostoevsky. What do all of the #littleraskols out there think about the different translations?? I know what I would choose judging in the covers 😍 but want to pick a good translation!! Help!

doodlebug55 I read Larissa Volokhonsky and Richard Pevear‘s translation, was pretty good. The prose flowed naturally and wasn‘t stilted, unlike some other translated works I‘ve read. 6y

KarouBlue Pevear/Volokhonsky are purists. Their motto is language for language‘s sake. Theirs will hug the original text the most accurately. I think you‘re pretty cover their may be the Oliver Ready translation - British and enjoyable. The Katz translation wasn‘t my personal favorite. Too heavy and I felt like it deviated from the original a little too much! 6y

emilyhaldi @MellieAntoinete Sounds like you're the true Russian literature expert!! Your thoughts echo most of what I have read- it seems that Ready is maybe a bit more modern and maybe has a better flow. I considered the Katz for a bit but glad I didn't go that route! 6y

LeahBergen I read the old translation by Constance Garnett and really enjoyed it. 6y

saresmoore I started out with Oliver Ready (and kept the copy because it‘s so pretty!) but it was TOO British/modern for me. It felt a bit jarring. But then again, it might be effective in bringing out more of Dostoevsky‘s own tone. P/V are meticulous and I‘ve really enjoyed their translations of Anna Karenina and now The Brothers Karamazov. It was McDuff‘s translation, though, that “felt” right and made the book more readable for me. 6y

saresmoore There are some interviews and articles with Pevear & Volokhonsky that I‘ve found really fascinating. Their process is impressive! 6y

emilyhaldi Interesting! @saresmoore Did you alternate the different translations as you read or once you tried McDuff did you stick with him? It would be curious (but time consuming) to have a couple different options while reading. 6y

saresmoore I cross-referenced with any passages that seemed weird or striking. The Penguin Classics Deluxe edition also had excellent footnotes, so I kept going back to those. I tend to be a slow & deep reader and I love falling down rabbit holes. Ultimately, though, I found McDuff‘s translation to be so effortless that I eventually got lost in the story. 6y

saresmoore @batsy I was still harboring hopes of doing Moby Dick for M until I looked at my pathetic list and realized the half-finished Middlemarch was a better choice than a fully unopened monolith! And really, I don‘t know if I‘ll ever finish The Brothers Karamazov. I‘m on page 20 out of 7,000,000 and I‘ve already read three different stories?! Gosh, sorry, I‘m being bleak. *ahem* We can do it! 💪 6y

batsy Hahaha! It's totally fine to be bleak, we're reading Dostoevsky and that means we're getting right into the spirit of things 😂 To be honest, I've been too terrified to start because it's been a busy few days. I'm hoping to *really* get started this weekend. 💪🏽👊🏽 6y

saresmoore @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I was stuck on hats for so many years—I have such a hard time getting them fitted correctly! The hardest part about cardigans is putting all of the pieces together. My first one was sort of a disaster—I put it together like pants, rather then a sweater and had to take it all apart. 😆 6y

Eventually I broke down and watched a YouTube video on a particular stitch and figured out that I was holding the yarn wrong (which explained my too-tight stitches and achy hands). Mostly I just gathered books and patterns and tried lots of things.
