Mehso-so

I didn‘t love this as much as I thought I would. While there is some very good writing and a sweet, if heartbreaking, story, I found this to be too sentimental. I tend to appreciate a good setting, but the descriptions in this (Oxford, France) often felt overwrought or superfluous, like name dropping. It‘s a good book, but maybe overhyped. This is the third book I‘ve read in a month that touches on the ‘80‘s AIDS epidemic, purely by coincidence.

Notafraidofwords I can‘t handle sentimentality really well. I mean I think some authors pull it off but it‘s hard to do. 6y
Cathythoughts I like your review. I gave it a pick .. but looking back I would rethink my decision. It was good , but not that good. 6y
DivineDiana The book that I am reading also touches on the 80‘s AIDS crisis. I was so moved that I watched the movie Philadelphia again. 6y

saresmoore @DivineDiana That sounds really interesting! I‘m a long-time fan of Florence, too—didn‘t realize she had a book club. Thank you for sharing! 6y
saresmoore @Cathythoughts I‘m glad I read it, because I think it portrayed a unique relationship and I did enjoy her writing. It just felt almost contrived, somehow, in the midst of other really excellent books I‘ve been reading. 6y
saresmoore @Notafraidofwords Sometimes I wonder if I‘m too cynical for my age. Or maybe it‘s just the whole empathy thing—I don‘t need an author to spell it out for me, I can already sense the emotion and the depth that lies beneath. I know you feel that, too. 6y
Tamra @saresmoore I know I am. 😳 6y
batsy I have difficulty with sentimentality in books, as well. And I do also wonder if I'm overly cynical?! Anyway, I just wanted to say this in solidarity #rudeladyreadersunite (I was interested in reading this, but was also worried I might be let down...) 6y
TrishB I normally hate sentimental books, but I didn‘t find this sentimental. Just poignant really. I loved it, but actively dislike some of the books that I think are sentimental and others love 🤷‍♀️ and sometimes depends on my mood... 6y
saresmoore @TrishB Poignant is a great description. I think I may just be saturated in the subject matter (love story complicated by grief, sickness, society) at the moment. But, to me, the characters seemed too good, too omniscient to be believable. 6y
TrishB The hype never helps either! Think I read this before I heard anything about it which always helps. But agree sometimes you get stuck in the same storyline. 6y
BarbaraBB So sorry to hear you didn‘t like it that much! 6y
Suet624 Yup, I liked the first half of the book. Didn‘t like the second half as much. 6y

The Brothers Karamazov | Fyodor Dostoevsky

Hmm, it seems I‘ve fallen a bit behind on my #LitsyClassics challenge. 😳 And The Brothers Karamazov is the one I just started... Well, I still think I can do it. I just have to get serious. 🧐

DivineDiana Didn‘t know about this challenge?!? Looks like you are making substantial progress! 👏🏻 6y
Leniverse Uh. I need to look at my signup document. I don‘t even remember what books I put on it. I might have read some of them. 😂 6y
batsy You can do it! 💪🏽 I need to get serious, too. We'll be earnest and serious together? 🧐 6y

emilyhaldi Fun!!! I want to start this challenge now (with a deadline falling somewhere in 2019 😂) 6y
Sarah83 Looks great 😍 6y
saresmoore @emilyhaldi It is a really great challenge. Just planning for it, I‘ve unearthed all sorts of interesting books! 6y
saresmoore @batsy Oh! Your use of “earnest” reminds me that I also already filled the I requirement! 😂 6y
saresmoore @Leniverse I intentionally left my sign up document blank to be filled in later. I am terrible at sticking to a planned list! 6y
batsy I just remembered I'd slotted in Moby Dick for M 😂 Maybe I should tackle that next year and not on a challenge basis 😬 6y
janeycanuck I just started crime and punishment. I‘m having trouble getting into it. Did you have that problem? 6y
saresmoore @janeycanuck It May be the translation. We compared several different ones for the #LittleRaskols buddy read. Do you know which translator you‘re reading? 6y
saresmoore @batsy I was still harboring hopes of doing Moby Dick for M until I looked at my pathetic list and realized the half-finished Middlemarch was a better choice than a fully unopened monolith! And really, I don‘t know if I‘ll ever finish The Brothers Karamazov. I‘m on page 20 out of 7,000,000 and I‘ve already read three different stories?! Gosh, sorry, I‘m being bleak. *ahem* We can do it! 💪 6y
janeycanuck @saresmoore no, it doesn‘t say and I can‘t figure it out by a quick google. I‘ll take a look at the translation convo and maybe pick up a different one. Thanks for the tip!! 6y
batsy Hahaha! It's totally fine to be bleak, we're reading Dostoevsky and that means we're getting right into the spirit of things 😂 To be honest, I've been too terrified to start because it's been a busy few days. I'm hoping to *really* get started this weekend. 💪🏽👊🏽 6y
saresmoore @batsy Again I find myself lamenting & longing for the seclusion of academic/cloistered/reclusive life. Maybe I‘ll just go hide myself in a closet and read Dickinson to recharge. 😬 6y
batsy Any room for me in that closet? *clambers in with a copy of Dickinson, tries not to step on your toes* 6y
saresmoore @batsy 😁 I‘m now imagining it through a portal to another dimension—we each have a door. Ah, the stuff of childhood daydreams! 6y
batsy Perfect 💫😍 6y
Moray_Reads I'm so jealous of your lovely handwriting! The thing (one of them) that I hated most about teaching was having my ugly writing up on the board all the time 🤭 6y
saresmoore @Moray_Reads It must be the years I spent doodling words in my notebook out of boredom during school. 🙃 6y
