Pickpick

I am making an effort to catch up on missed #bookedintime @Cuilin and thought this middle grade fiction might be the way to do it. talk about a not just for children! 3 siblings a year into the blight take to the road after their mother doesn‘t come back from trying to find their dad after the death of their youngest sibling. Life on the road is incredibly hard and starvation is near, yet they also see food being exported. A shameful truth.

Cuilin Such a good book! It was a part of the primary curriculum in Ireland. I‘m not sure if it still is. 5d

Amiable Great list! Thanks for posting! 1mo
Cuilin @julieclair oh my gosh I would love to see this list, but I‘m not on Instagram. I wonder if there‘s any other way to see it, we could get some inspiration for #BookedInTime. 1mo
Texreader @Cuilin I poked around and couldn‘t find this posted anywhere on the net. I‘ll see if there‘s only a few pages I can post them here. I think a lot of folks who are not on instagram would like to see these recommendations 1mo

Mehso-so

This book was brutal. I can‘t say I enjoyed reading it, but I did learn a lot. It‘s a dual timeline novel, set in 1930s Berlin and 1950s Buenos Aires. Both locations were written with a strong sense of time and place, and the novel was well-researched, particularly the sections that took place in Argentina. ⬇️

julieclair (cont.) The main character was a famous police detective in Berlin before WWII, became an SS Officer during the war, and was one of the many Nazi officers who escaped to Argentina after the war. He continued his detective work there, investigating some truly horrific murders. Reading this book helped me realize that I‘m not a fan of hard-boiled detective stories. I much prefer cozy mysteries. 1mo
julieclair This was my #BookedInTime pick for August. @Cuilin 1mo
AlaMich I‘m a big fan of this series, though I think the books set only in ‘30s Berlin before and during the war are the more interesting. 1mo

Cuilin Ugh, this time period is rough. Congratulations for finishing it. I‘m thinking of DNFing mine. I also like my mysteries cozy!! (edited) 1mo
julieclair @AlaMich I haven‘t read any of the others. I knew this one was #5 in the series, but it worked well as a stand-alone. 1mo
julieclair @Cuilin It is definitely rough. And I was surprised how little I really knew about it. As with almost all #BookedInTime books, I learned a lot. 1mo

I spent some time researching this one as it‘s not a location or period I‘ve read much about. I recommend Story of the Night by Colm Tóibín. I‘m still deciding what to read. Thoughts?

Singout Have you looked at “Bad Girls” by Camilla Sosa Villada? I found that compelling. 2mo
