The Morgan Library
The Morgan Library: an American masterpiece | Pierpont Morgan Library
43 posts | 1 read
Now recognized as one of the world's greatest treasuries of seminal artistic, literary, musical and historical works, The Pierpont Morgan Library in New York began in the 1890s as the private collection of the legendary American financier for whom it was named. This highly illustrated publication presents the most significant examples of the library's holdings of paintings and art objects, medieval and Renaissance manuscripts, printed books, autograph manuscripts, children's books and drawings and prints. Seven chapters cover each of the main collecting areas, with key works illustrated in full color and described with extended captions and commentaries.

Although I lived in New York for several years, I had never visited the Morgan Library and Museum before last week. Did you know that JP Morgan was obscenely wealthy? 😁 So much so that he had not one, not two, but THREE Guttenberg Bibles in his collection. Lots of other cool stuff too, including a fragment from the original manuscript of Paradise Lost, an original copy of the Apocalypsis, and Henry VIII's personal Bible.

MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm 😱😍 Adding this place to my bucket list! 2y
The_Penniless_Author @MegaWhoppingCosmicBookwyrm There are a couple medieval bestiaries on display as well. They probably even include a wyrm! 😁 2y
TrishB At least the peasants and non-wealthy can see them! 2y

The_Penniless_Author @TrishB Say what you will about the robber barons, at least they left behind some nice public institutions on their way to the great beyond. I don't have high hopes for the current crop of tech bros when their time comes. 2y

Visited The Morgan Library in NYC today. It was the library of J. Pierpont Morgan and includes illuminated, literary, and historical manuscripts, early printed books, and old master drawings and prints. To this core collection, he added the earliest evidence of writing as manifested in ancient seals, tablets, and papyrus fragments from Egypt and the Near East. Morgan also collected manuscripts and printed materials significant to American history.

LeahBergen I LOVE The Morgan Library! ❤️❤️ 2y

Hanging out at Recycled Reads, making book hedgehogs out of material that would have found their way to a landfill. By the way, books don‘t break down in landfills so maybe consider repurposing them if they can no longer be read. #reduce #reuse #recycle #bookishart

I‘m at the Central Library in Austin tonight for a slumber party - it‘s really an homage to slumber parties but I still get to be in the library for two hours after it‘s closed to everyone else. 😈

It‘s National Library Week. I‘ve been visiting the library since I was about 5 or 6, when I got my first library card. The library has continued to be an important part of my life. In recognition of the important role libraries have played in my life I decided to write about it in my most recent blog post. Feel free to check it out if you‘d like, and share your own love of libraries. #NationalLibraryWeek #LibrariesTransform

JosieG My local library has undergone many a transformation over the years. Since I was a child they have not only completely renovated the building, but also in the years since then completely redone the layout of their books and materials. But it is still a beloved and comforting place for me to go. Books have always been a huge, happy part of my life, and the library had a huge hand in that. 6y

1. I visit my university's library every day and the public library about once every month or two.
2. I love all libraries, so i don't think I could say. I really miss my hometown's library, it weirdly had mpre selection, as a small town, than we do in Philly.
3. Red Clocks by Leni Zumas, My Friend Leonard by James Frey, and The Folklore of Discworld by Terry Pratchett.
4. Real young, probably 5 y.o, maybe younger.

Libraries can be great places to study. The #CentralLibrary has a lot of wonderful spaces you could use. Maybe you should visit? #LibraryLove #APLAmbassador

Note: The Central Library in Austin has a lot of great spaces to use for studying but I don‘t know if I‘d be able to use them because the last time I was there it was too loud on several floors. It might depend on day/time and where you are in the building, though.

Soubhiville I‘m so excited to eventually get to see this library! It looks amazing! 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Soubhiville It‘s pretty awesome. If you can figure out a less busy time to go your first time that‘s best. That way you‘ll be able to really see everything. 6y

I‘m not a fan of 45 but if there are people who want to read his books and they‘re in the public library, well, that‘s how it works. I‘m not going to ask for them to be removed. Just using this as an example. People tend to defend what they love and go after what they don‘t. It works both ways, y‘all.

My niece bought everyone in the family tickets to visit the Pierpont Morgan 1906 Library and Museum. It was beautiful. Three tiers of books. An exhibition of correspondence between Alexander Hamilton, his wife, and his son was on display.

Years ago I resisted the idea of ebooks. Even after I got a Kindle and acquired a lot of free or super cheap ebooks I still didn‘t read a lot of ebooks. Now, I read mostly ebooks because a Kindle is easier to carry on the bus and I find them easier to read in bed. Combine that with Hoopla, Overdrive, and a KindleUnlimited subscription I have access to a LOT of books!

JacqMac I was the same, but Ebooks are so much easier to read in bed. 6y
Tamra What is the difference between Hoopla and Overdrive? I‘m new to the ebook thing. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Tamra In my experience Overdrive tends to have more audiobooks but it also has waitlists for books. Hoopla doesn‘t have waitlists. I only get access to 4 items through Hoopla a month but other libraries have different limits. I think Overdrive, just like with physical books, is more how many you can have out at one time but I‘ve only started using it so I‘ve not worked out all the pros and cons. 6y
See All 8 Comments
Tamra @jpmcwisemorgan does your library have to support Hoopla? 6y
CouronneDhiver I definitely prefer my printed copies but I make great use of my Overdrive app. 😊 6y
catsuit_mango Is hoopla ios only (I'm android)? 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Tamra As far as I know Hoopla is through libraries. I‘ve never checked to see if you could purchase an individual subscription. @catsuit_mango I use Hoopla on my iPhone and Kindle. 6y

One of my friends in college dated a guy who didn‘t understand the connection between what he found in the card catalog and the numbers on the books. We weren‘t freshman either so I don‘t know how he managed until that point. My friend later married the guy and they‘re still married so it wasn‘t a deal breaker for her. 😉

Wife I was shocked that a 20 yr old I met recently did not know (and said she had never been taught) how to tell time with a traditional clock face 🕚🕙🕢🕜🕗🕑🕖🕓🕧😳 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Wife Wow! I guess that‘s about right, though. Digital clocks and cell phones have been around for long enough that a lot people would be more comfortable with them. It‘s kind of sad, like we‘re losing some skill that we‘ll regret someday. 6y
Wife I‘m planning to teach my grandson cursive writing. I‘m sad that it‘s not being taught in school anymore. (edited) 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @Wife It will be interesting in a few decades when these kids are grown up and trying to do primary source research in things like journals and they can‘t read them. 6y

I would love to own a library card catalog. They cost sooooo much money though!

LibrarianRyan Pay attention to EBay. Libraries have a hard time getting rid of them. Normally because they are huge. But more modern ones come apart in sections, and many times you can find sections on eBay cheep. It's the shipping that sucks. 6y
jpmcwisemorgan @LibrarianRyan Thank you for the tip! 6y
LibrarianRyan @jpmcwisemorgan we had the hardest time selling our at my last library. I think we sold 3. One classic sized, two small. And the rest was a mega catalog that came apart in 24 parts. We sold two of the parts and then everyone who wanted a part could have one. I have 4. Dads going to build me a base and put wheels on it so I can stack it two high. I have craft supplies and books marks in mine. 6y
rustoryhuf My first job was typing cards for those lovely card catalogs. I now have one in my living room. It holds yarn rather than cards, but the love is still there. 6y

At professional development this week at the Pierpont Morgan library, we're learning about illuminated manuscripts. ❤️Really excited about the program, our students will get to grind ingredients, like lapis, to create dyes, and use gold leaf for the books they are writing.

Photo unrelated to the illuminated texts but editions I was drooling over! Good thing they were locked away. 📚
