Emma - Marjolein Bastin Classics Series
Emma - Marjolein Bastin Classics Series | Jane - Bastin Austen, Marjolein
6 posts | 1 read
The exquisite illustrations of Marjolein Bastin meet timeless text in this elegant special edition of an English masterpiece.
The Marjolein Bastin Classics Series is a chance to rediscover classic literature in collectible, luxuriously illustrated volumes. For the first time ever, the internationally celebrated artwork of Marjolein Bastin graces the pages of the timeless classic, Emma, the story of the well-meaning matchmaker of Highbury village. Beyond bringing these stories to life, Bastin’s series adds elaborately designed ephemera, such as letters, invitations, and more. Whether an ideal gift for an Austen devotee or a treat for yourself, The Marjolein Bastin Classics Series, as a set or individually purchased, is perfect for anyone who feels a connection to these enduring literary gems.
Discover anew the dramatic world of Emma. Emma Woodhouse is the most influential young woman in the tranquil village of Highbury, where she lives with her father. As a rich heiress, she is absolutely determined never to marry, though she entertains herself with all kinds of matchmaking attempts for her friends and acquaintances. Doing so causes a number of misunderstandings and embarrassments, to the point that Mr. Knightley, the family’s closest friend, intervenes and sharply criticizes Emma. While Emma admits her mistake and makes attempts at gradual damage control, she falls in love after all. . . .

Mid-month check in for Emma 'Now'. I joined a couple of friends for a movie watch party of Clueless. Such a fun trip back to the 90's. What are you reading or watching? 💛💛💛💛💛

AnneCecilie I‘ve also watched Clueless. It was such a long time since I saw it that I had forgotten how good it was. I also saw the 1996 adaption with Gwyneth Paltrow. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @AnishaInkspill I've not heard of Emma Approved. I'll check it out. Thank you. 2d
Crinoline_Laphroaig @AnneCecilie I'm watching 1996 one soon! 2d

Pickpick

#Pemberlittens it's time for Emma discussion! Her are my answers:
1️⃣ 5 total. 4X since beginning to track my reading on Goodreads in 2017 and then once as a teenager. I swapped between the gorgeously summery tagged edition & early autumnal Signature Gilded classic edition. Finished up with Juliet Stevenson audio.
2️⃣ My perspective changed after reading article about as a caretaker she tied to her home parenting her parent. Loveable snob. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 3️⃣ Mr Knightley. He's a bit grumpy and bossy at times. But he is kind. I love how he decides to move into Emma‘s home rather than upset Mr. Woodhouse.
Least favorite - Frank Churchill. He's such a cad! Yes he's hiding his engagement but that doesn't mean he needs to flirt so much with Emma. And he hides his mean-spiritedness with charm.⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 4️⃣ Strawberry picking at Donwell is my favorite. I hope one day to plan something inspired by it for my blueberries. Picnic at Box Hill is so cringy. Emma and Frank are horrible.
5️⃣ It's funny how often great quotes are given to unlikeable characters.
“Ah! there is nothing like staying at home for real comfort.” - Mrs Elton
“No coffee, I thank you, for me — never take coffee. — A little tea if you please,” - Miss Bates. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig 6️⃣ Harriet is so easily swayed that sensible Robert Martin will be a good influence on her. I understand why Jane Fairfax accepted Frank Churchill. But I'm not certain she'll be all that financially secure,he will probably lose the fortune. Also feel he will lose interest in her, cheat, and make her life miserable. ⬇️

Crinoline_Laphroaig Emma and Knightley will be happy I think. With Knightley being so much older she will end up being a rich widow and go back to her busybody match-making ways and turn into a holy terror.

7️⃣ Miss Bates because she's harmless. Mrs. E will run your life.
8️⃣ I take the gruel! When Harriet couldn't make up her mind on ribbon or where to send had me yelling ‘JUST MAKE A DECISION‘ at the audiobook.⬇️
3w
Crinoline_Laphroaig 9️⃣ I love the relationship between the Knightley brothers: “How d‘ye do, George?” and “John, how are you?” succeeded in the true English style, burying under a calmness that seemed all but indifference, the real attachment which would have led either of them, if requisite, to do every thing for the good of the other.”

*October means it's time for #EverythingEmma ‘Now‘ retellings and adaptations. 🎩📖👒

eeclayton I agree about Jane and Frank, not a good match. He seems primarily interested in her looks, not in her person. 3w
Bookwormjillk Yes on everything you said about Frank Churchill! 3w
willaful @Crinoline_Laphroaig Kind of like how Polonius from Hamlet is so often quoted! 3w

How goes your September? Have you finished reading this month's 'Then' - Emma? I've just started. But I did add the very autumnal Signature Gilded Edition to my collection. (I'm up to 9 Emmas.) As well as the very summery Mansfield Park. Peacock Pride and Prejudice is my favorite. Now if only Northanger Abbey would be released. 🦚📖 📚

September means it's time for Emma. My print collection is up to 8. It's a busy month for me. Rather than committing to 2 chapters a day, I'm going to read as I can and listen some.

None of my editions are in the Litsy database so I'll need to add. What edition will you be reading?
