Murder by Cheesecake
Murder by Cheesecake: A Golden Girls Cozy Mystery | Rachel Ekstrom Courage
21 posts | 15 read | 14 to read
The first novel in the all-new Golden Girls Cozy Mystery Series! When Dorothys obnoxious date is found dead in a hotel freezer, it not only ruins a gorgeous cheesecake but threatens the elaborate St. Olafthemed wedding Rose is hosting. Things are heating up, and not just because of Blanches hot flashes. Roses cousin is eloping to Miami, and Rose is playing host. If she can't balance the grooms familys snobbery against the traditional St. Olaf wedding week guidelines, her hometown may never accept her cousin again! Dorothy quickly realizes she needs a date with whom she can exchange wedding-related wisecracks. Turning to a newfangled VHS dating service, she believes shes found the ideal conversationalist. Unfortunately, what looks good on TV can actually be a total jerk in real life. It seems shell just have to enjoy the company of Sophia, Blanche, and whomever Blanche has targeted for a hookup. As the Girls all pitch in, Rose is thrilled that the tea-and-fish-themed kickoff event is perfect, not a herring out of place. That is until Dorothys date is found deadface-planted in an otherwise scrumptious-looking cheesecake. With every guest a suspect (especially Dorothy) and a marriage on the line, the four besties must ID the real killer, get the should-be-happy couple down the aisle, and make sure nobody from St. Olaf gets lost in the wilds of Miami. Its up to the Golden Girls to sleuth out a way for friendship and love to win the day!

This was a cute first instalment in the series. I think the author did a decent job of including character traits of the original tv GGs and spot-on 1980s references (“It‘s not that I don‘t want to help you, Dorothy, I do…But I‘m no Jessica Fletcher. I have no idea how to solve a murder.) 3/5⭐️

MemoirsForMe I have this one in my bookcase too. Sounds like it‘s cheesy enough for me. 😁 Glad you liked it! 3mo
PurpleyPumpkin @MemoirsForMe It was a nice, light read, perfect for the slower summer months. I‘ll definitely continue reading the series. 😉 3mo

“Rose Nylund whispered into the lemon-yellow telephone receiver, twisting the cord tightly between her fingers, her words obscured by the gurgling of the coffee percolator.”

PurpleyPumpkin @AlaMich I had to look that up - hilarious! I really must watch that series again. I‘m so nostalgic about it but I‘m betting there‘s a lot I don‘t remember. What I do remember is loving the show way back in the day!💜 3mo

Ahh this was a sweet and sparkly palette cleanser! Gotta love those Golden Girls! Were the 80s references a little heavy handed? Was there entirely too much St Olaf? Were the murder and the marriage just a little nonsensical? Yes to all of the above, but idc. Fresh and fluffy like a cheesecake, this was a quick, easy, and nostalgic read that cleared some of the cobwebs and darkness out of my mind and made me laugh. Off to watch reruns…

Picture it: British Columbia 2025. A bespectacled librarian comes upon a cozy mystery featuring beloved characters from a tv show that was ubiquitous in her childhood. Was it a little too St. Olaf heavy? Sure. But it was also tons of fun.

Someone else described this as feeling like AI was fed scripts of Golden Girls and told to write a cozy mystery, and this is what came out. I 100% agree. It was just…not for me. I love the GG, but I couldn‘t do this one. I made it 100 pages, and was so tired of St Olaf wedding traditions. 😔

Rose is planning a wedding for a relative from St. Olaf, and when Dorothy‘s date to the wedding turns up dead, she becomes the prime suspect. This was just a good, silly time, and I loved it! I‘m not saying that the story was groundbreaking or anything, but I think the voices of the Girls were captured nicely. Lots of 80s nostalgia and references to things that actually happened on the show!

Silly, most definitely, but still full of nostalgic fun, I enjoyed this new cozy mystery featuring The Golden Girls. The dialogue rings pretty true to the characters‘ voices & I definitely laughed in a few spots! But there are a few anachronistic moments & the plot‘s not very shocking. I still overall had fun with this one and am curious to see if this series will continue on— I would keep going with it for sure!

JenlovesJT47 I love the Golden Girls. Today seems like as good a day as any to start the show from the beginning. I‘ve never watched the entire thing. 5mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 My husband and I did that a few years ago! Such fun since there were definitely episodes that neither of us had ever seen before! I think the spinoff show is also all online now, but we haven‘t watched that yet! 5mo
JenlovesJT47 My fave episode is the one with Burt Reynolds and the ladies of the night 😅 5mo
TorieStorieS @JenlovesJT47 Oh that is a good one!! I‘m not sure which episode is my favorite! I guess we should re-watch again to figure that out! 😊 5mo

I love the Golden Girls (I‘m a Dorothy, by the way). Of course I had to try this. While this does not quite capture the magic of the television show, it‘s close. And really, can anything capture it (I have the same feelings for the Murder, She Wrote book series)???

Dorothy is accused of murder, and Rose has to put the St Olaf spin on her niece‘s wedding. There‘s humor with that heartwarming touch of friendship and family. ⬇️⬇️⬇️

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ There is a glimmer of the witty banter from the show, and it makes me laugh out loud in parts. Fans of the show will also pick up on allusions to episodes. Note that given how the series ends, this book takes place before the series ending, so it‘s not a continuation but feels more like a nostalgic look at the characters. I do wish Stan made an appearance—that would have made for some interesting situations! I‘m craving cheesecake now! 6mo

A sarcastic substitute teacher, a naive Midwestern airhead, a southern sexpot, and a ornery curmudgeon walk into a bar; rather, four 'Golden Girls' room together in a house in Miami and solve crazy crimes. That is the premise in this new fanfic homage to the popular 80's sitcom. During Rose's wedding planning for a relative, Dorothy's date for the event dies leading to a cozy mystery investigation.
