I loved this book! Eden Robinson‘s way with dialogue had me chuckling even when situations in the book were definitely not amusing. There was humour, there was depth to the characters, there was all the feels. #readthenorth #gillarprizefinalst #favourite #octoberread

I read this Sept 6-7 and gave it 4.75 ⭐️ on Good Reads. This book is darkly funny and poignant. It broke my heart in some places and I just wanted Jared to catch a break. I can‘t wait to get the next book.

Does anyone have a source they use specifically for audiobook reviews? I‘m picky about narration & have been relying pretty much solely on Litsy reviews & the Audie Awards lists.

Also, there are some books that are difficult to get through interlibrary loan. Rather than paying for a print copy on Amazon or whatever, I‘d gladly use an Audible credit — IF I knew that the voice performance was good. It‘d be great to be able to look that up!

TIA🙏🏻

tpixie Great question! But I don‘t have the answer. I do sometimes listen to the samples on Audible which gives me a little idea. Good luck 🍀 9mo
thebluestocking I look at Audible reviews sometimes. 9mo
Weaponxgirl I don‘t really know anywhere, I use the audiobooks section on bookriot but that‘s about all I know. Tag me please if someone has a great suggestion 9mo

JaclynW I read Audible reviews and listen to samples. BookRiot also has an audiobook newsletter that I subscribe to. 9mo
Bookwormjillk I look at the Audie awards too. The Modern Mrs. Darcy blog has some good suggestions as well. 9mo
Christine AudioFile Magazine has a podcast that is pretty fun. https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/behind-the-mic-with-audiofile-magazine/id143... They cover most genres, so the books discussed are not always in my wheelhouse, but many are. And I think you can read/search reviews on their website, though I‘ve never tried. :) @Weaponxgirl (edited) 9mo
jmofo The samples help me a great deal. I have a few favorite readers and seek them out, for sure. There are some male readers who are well-loved but I think the voices they do for women are absolute rubbish and keep me from enjoying the writing, so I read reviews with reservations. 9mo
Christine Edit: I‘ve now checked out their website and it looks like a pretty useful resource! Thanks for leading me to the discovery! I definitely think I‘ll use it in the future. www.audiofilemagazine.com 9mo
Weaponxgirl @Christine thankyou! 9mo
monalyisha @Bookwormjillk That looks like a super helpful resource! I‘ve bookmarked it & am looking forward to checking it out. 😍 Thank you! 9mo
monalyisha @Christine Thanks for the heads-up! I‘ll definitely look into that. 9mo
Sharpeipup @Bookwormjillk I agree - Audie Award winners are the way to go! 9mo
SweetAngst I always listen to the samples and can usually tell if I can stand the narrator. Remember you can return Audible titles if you're unhappy with them :) 8mo
Chelleo Yeah, I usually go with the Audies and I have a list of faves and avoids that keep me in good shape. Will definitely check out some of the recs here too! 8mo

Afternoon reading: There are CANNIBALISTIC RIVER OTTERS in this novel and I am retroactively mad at everyone who knew this and didn‘t tell me sooner. 😝

ElvinaGB I just finished #2 in this series. 'Trickster Drift'was a great read. Sea otters, ghosts, scary old ladies and scooters. And a hell of an ending. 10mo

I kept waiting for the story line to further develop and it does not. I found this to be 300 pages of a sad story with no progression throughout the book and no definitive ending. It has left me frustrated as I liked the main character and kept waiting for something interesting to develop.

This book starts as a compelling coming of age story featuring a First Nations teenager dealing with an inconsistent mom, drug and alcohol use, family and neighbours that need a great deal of support etc. etc. At some point it become a very supernatural story (no spoilers) which took me by surprise and pulled me into the narrative even deeper. This book was funny, sad and gut-wrenching with a healthy dose of weird. Definitely recommend it!

Carleneishere That‘s a very compelling description! Thanks! 2y

If you want a story with no swearing, drugs/alcohol or violence, do not read this book. If you want a story that sways between hysterical laughter and heart gripping terror about a boy dealing with a Mother (who takes the “mother bear” instincts to a new level), teenage friendship, a mixed bag of a community, escape through addiction and the consequences related, and choices for love of others and self, read this book. Thank you Eden Robinson.

A funny, but a not comedic story of an awesome teenage boy living in a tough world.

The story is good in pointing out that culture, traditions, and beliefs are always there. I wonder, am I the only one, in this instance, that saw the Trickster as a metaphor?

And, Oh what a mom!

Son of a Trickster was shortlisted for the Giller Prize and is currently on the Tournament of Books longlist, although maybe a bit of a dark horse. Jared is a first nations teen with divorced unreliable parents, a grandmother who claims he isn't entirely human, and a bit of a drug and alcohol problem.
I still can't decide what I think. It's readable but something is missing....

TheKidUpstairs Does it change anything to know it is the first bok of a planned trilogy? I found that it seemed incomplete somehow, and then I read that it is only the beginning and that made so much more sense. 2y
ReadingEnvy @TheKidUpstairs not really. i do think there is an indication of where the story might go but I think in general the author is better at writing the flawed characters than doing something with them. It's not as bad as that sounds but it was as if she could have started the story at any place in time because what happens isn't so much the point. 2y
TNbooklover66 But it‘s a pretty book. 😍😂 2y

Well-written and engaging. I found it dragged a bit around the third-quarter of the book, but mostly because I didn't want to read about the main character being mistreated any longer. 4/5 #canadianauthor

Finished this one last night, and I think I loved it. It's interesting, because for the first half or so is occasionally think "I thought there was going to be more mythology/supernatural elements?" Then in the second half, those came on fast and furious and it seemed a little unbalanced. I ended up loving the first half, liking the second half. Will definitely watch for the next book (I think there's another one coming)

High school is hard enough for Jared without parents who deal drugs and party for days. Then there's the raven who talks to him, and the annoying patter of the fireflies over his girlfriend's head - no one else sees or hears them. If Jared really is the son of a supernatural being, why isn't his life better? Gritty, witty and full of heart. #CanLit #Indigenous

Hooked_on_books So I've done a little research and discovered this book is not for sale in the US! Not cool! I'm about 60 pages into Monkey Beach, and if I keep enjoying it as much as I am now, I'm going to have to find a Canadian retailer to get me this book. 3y
