An uncanny literary thriller addressing the painful legacy of lynching in the US, by the author of Telephone Percival Everett's The Trees is a page-turner that opens with a series of brutal murders in the rural town of Money, Mississippi. When a pair of detectives from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation arrive, they meet expected resistance from the local sheriff, his deputy, the coroner, and a string of racist White townsfolk. The murders present a puzzle, for at each crime scene there is a second dead body: that of a man who resembles Emmett Till. The detectives suspect that these are killings of retribution, but soon discover that eerily similar murders are taking place all over the country. Something truly strange is afoot. As the bodies pile up, the MBI detectives seek answers from a local root doctor who has been documenting every lynching in the country for years, uncovering a history that refuses to be buried. In this bold, provocative book, Everett takes direct aim at racism and police violence, and does so in a fast-paced style that ensures the reader can't look away. The Trees is an enormously powerful novel of lasting importance from an author with his finger on America's pulse.

Wow. This was stellar. Has anyone read any of Everett‘s other works? I need more but am not sure where to start. Would love a recommendation.

SamAnne I‘m still recovering from this read! Finished it a couple days ago. Erasure and Telephone have been recommended to me. I want to read more of him! 13mo
Jess @SamAnne I know. This one will be with me for some time. Thanks for passing on these two. 13mo
CSeydel Erasure may be my favorite of his. I liked Assumption too, but a lot of people hated it, so I‘d hold off until you really get a feel for Everett‘s somewhat perverse sense of storytelling. 10mo
Jess @CSeydel thanks for the recommendations! I will check both out. 10mo

Bonkers! Smart, funny, outrageous, maddening and I loved every minute.

The lists of names & places is haunting, appropriately so. I won‘t forget this novel.

Suet624 Agree with everything you wrote. Read it quite some time ago and I still talk about it and encourage folks to read it. 1y
Tamra @Suet624 did you listen to the audio? The narrator is fabulous - sounds like Morgan Freeman. 😄 I will pick up a paper copy when I find it second hand as I‘m likely to read it again. 1y
megnews The list. I was crying by the end. 1y

Searching for a photo suitable for today‘s #WinterReadathonDailyChallenge, I can across this photo I took a few years ago. It‘s not an evergreen - not even sure it was still alive! - but look at the way a shaft of late summer afternoon sun catches this one tree amongst all the others.

@Andrew65
@DieAReader
@GHABI4ROSES

Andrew65 It does look as if it‘s a dead tree, but what a stunning image in that sunlight. Summer …. Sun…bring it on 😂 🎄🎄🎄 (edited) 1y

Oof. This book. There‘s nothing I could say that hasn‘t been said. While dealing with horrendous subject matter, scattered throughout you will find witty dialogue, playful language, and laughs. It‘s readable, a page-turner actually. I haven‘t read a book this fast in a long time. Great day to finish it as it was announced that it made the #Booker2022 shortlist. I am rooting for it and Small Things.

Cathythoughts Great review! Sounds good….I must try read it. 👍🏻♥️ 2y

This book blew me away. Lynching & other gruesome murders do not seem the topic of a fast-paced, funny, entertaining novel. And yet this book manages to achieve that. The brutal legacy of lynching is not trivialized & somehow is made readable. It's pretty amazing! And almost perfection but things fell apart for me in the last 20 pages. Still, an impressive feat! This is Everett's 3rd time in the #TOB. I won't be sad if he finally wins it all 🐓

Addison_Reads Great review! I think this book has a good chance of winning it all. 2y
Jas16 This book blew me away too. 2y
Ruthiella Loved this one. It‘s been a while, but I thought it ended well. I just didn‘t quite understand why the scene where Dinah /Gertrude and Agent (Jim?) are locked in the walk in freezer. (edited) 2y

merelybookish @Addison_Reads Thanks! Yes, I think it does too. 2y
merelybookish @Jas16 It is really an achievement! 2y
merelybookish @Ruthiella Yeah, Jim let Gertrude off the.hook. But the Trump speech and other things felt heavy handed. I knew it was going to be a tricky story to end successfully. 2y

Only on Chapter 6 so I can only comment on what I've read so far. Started reading during my lunch hour & chuckled my way through. I've not read this author before, but saints be praised! The Tournament has given me a book I can laugh/be aghast about. I like that combo.

#TOB22

RaeLovesToRead What's TOB? I'm intrigued... 2y
Suet624 @RaeLovesToRead it‘s the Tournament of Books. You can google it or I‘ll send you a link in a few hours when I get home. 2y
alisiakae That's a perfect description of reading this book! I can't wait to read more of his novels. 2y

RaeLovesToRead I shall Google! 🗡🛡🏹 2y
Suet624 @RaeLovesToRead Here's the great thing about the Tournament. Every year I read books I would never have heard about or picked up. For instance, I'm not one to read science fiction, but I'll always remember the ones from the TOB. It introduces me to books that I don't find on other lists. The Tournament itself, as the judges discuss their reasoning for voting for the book, is always a fun experience. 2y
RaeLovesToRead Looks great! I'll be following it 😊 There are so many books on the list I want to read ❤ I ordered a copy of The Sentence just yesterday. 2y
Suet624 @RaeLovesToRead That‘s the next one I want to read. Gotta find a library that has it though. 2y
Ruthiella Agree that your description of the split between tragic and comic is well done. It‘s a fine line and Everett never oversteps. 2y
Cinfhen Yes, the humor is subtle and balances the darker subject matter 2y
squirrelbrain Looking forward to this one very much. I bought it just before Christmas and hope to get to it soon…. 2y
BarbaraBB Happy you‘re enjoying it. I loved it. It‘s so dark and yet humorous. 2y
Suet624 @Ruthiella I just finished the book I had been reading when The Trees fell into my lap during a recent lunch. I'm generally a monogamist reader and can't handle mixing storylines, so now I can finally jump back into this one with both feet. 💥 🎊 2y
Suet624 @Cinfhen Authors are amazing. I was thinking of Tom Robbins and Christopher Moore as I read this. They often make me chuckle and have such brilliant ways of writing. Moore doesn't handle tough topics, but he sure is something. 2y
Suet624 @squirrelbrain I'm excited for you. 2y
Suet624 @BarbaraBB How do these authors manage to pull off this kind of thing? I bow to Everett. 2y
BarbaraBB I‘ve read three books by Everett so far and all were fabulous for different reasons. I bow to him too! 2y
Suet624 @barbarabb Oooohhh. I guess I‘m going to have to find more of his. (edited) 2y

Truly smart satire of America‘s ugly racism both past and current.

In tiny Money, Mississippi, a white man turns up gruesomely dead with a dead Black man nearby holding his testicles. As the scene repeats itself locally and eventually nationally, law enforcement looks to find out whose involved.

I know, this doesn‘t sound funny, but Everett is an extremely adept at knowing when to turn up the absurdity and when to be pensive. Enthusiastic pick!

Megabooks This is in the top 5 of #ToBshortlist picks for me. I‘m at 11 or 12 that I‘ve read so far. 👍🏻 thank you for the wonderful gift @Cinfhen !! 💚🎄 2y
squirrelbrain This is one that I‘m really looking forward to -great review! 2y
Ruthiella I think this is the clear front runner among readers here and on Goodreads. I have my copy from the library and am off work next week, so I hope to get to it then! 2y

Megabooks @squirrelbrain it‘s pretty amazing!! 2y
Megabooks @Ruthiella I liked telephone last year, but this is even better!! 2y
Cinfhen Great review, Meg. I thought you‘d like it. It‘s in my top 5 too….but I haven‘t read as many as you. 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen it is amazingly thoughtful satire. I am a Percival believer now!! 2y
BarbaraBB Great review. I‘m a believer too. Weren‘t you bothered by the way he describes Mississippi people? I was wondering how Americans would feel since it is so one dimensional and insulting. 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I wasn‘t offended. I guess I‘m kind of used to people thinking southerners are racist idiots. I enjoy proving people wrong about me personally. While the book was a bit extreme, it wasn‘t coming out of nowhere. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 2y
BarbaraBB I wasn‘t referring to you as a Southerner but as an American: I thought the generalization was extreme. I had to laugh at times but personally thought it a bit too biased 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I think that‘s where the satire comes in. It‘s very American in its humor. An acting version of it wouldn‘t be out of place on a sketch comedy show like Key and Peele. 2y
BarbaraBB Ah! That is so enlightening! While I am shocked this is just typical humor for you, nothing new. I now get it - and why I haven‘t read opinions similar to mine! Thank you 🤍🤍 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB 😘😘😘 I love our cultural exchanges dear friend!! 2y

What begins as dark humor quickly turns deadly serious. Everett cleverly reminds us of America‘s whitewashing of history and the need to RISE UP. I found the “humor” a little too slapstick at times. #SocialHorror Not my favorite choice from #ToBShortlist but I‘m happy to see this book made the list. This was also my #BookSpin @TheAromaofBooks

BarbaraBB Glad you liked it. What is your favorite so far? 2y
Cinfhen I think it‘s still this one @BarbaraBB 2y
Cinfhen Is this one your favorite so far @BarbaraBB ?? 2y

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!!! 2y
BarbaraBB I‘m not sure. This one or Lockwood or 2y
Cinfhen I‘m looking forward to this one @BarbaraBB 2y
Cinfhen I also liked this one @squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB but I don‘t think it deserves to be BEST book of the year 2y
Megabooks Hello! Why are we not talking about the awesomeness of 2y
Megabooks Also, I am definitely not feeling 2y
Cinfhen Hahaha @Megabooks Matrix was good but not my favorite xx 2y
Megabooks Well this was my second favorite so far. I hope you like it too. 2y
Megabooks But I also loved the Lockwood!! Such a great field this year! 2y
squirrelbrain Matrix is up there for me @Megabooks - perhaps second so far…. I have both The Echo Wife and Intimacies on hold at the library. @Cinfhen @BarbaraBB 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I‘m not feeling Matrix… I‘m reading a translation, that might be it, it my own impatience, but I can‘t get the hang of it 🤦🏻‍♀️ I hope you do, @squirrelbrain ! (edited) 2y
BarbaraBB @Cinfhen The parcel should arrive soon now, it‘s in Israel according to my t&t 2y
Cinfhen Yay 😁 @BarbaraBB thanks SO MUCH 2y
Megabooks @BarbaraBB I think it would have to be a talented translator to get the beauty of Groff‘s writing matched. The prose (as opposed to the plot) is what made this so wonderful for me. 2y
BarbaraBB @Megabooks I guessed so. To me it‘s a meandering story, a bit of plot, not blown away by the proza - in Dutch. 2y
