The Golden Age
The Golden Age: A Novel | Joan London
22 posts | 9 read | 24 to read
Winner of the 2015 Prime Minister's Award for Fiction Joan London, author of Gilgamesh, gives her readers an immensely satisfying and generous-hearted story about displacement, recovery, resilience, and love with The Golden Age. Thirteen-year-old Frank Golds family, Hungarian jews, escape the perils of World War II to the safety of Australia in the 1940s. But not long after their arrival Frank is diagnosed with polio. He is sent to a sprawling childrens hospital called The Golden Age, where he meets Elsa, the most beautiful girl he has ever seen, a girl who radiates pure light. Frank and Elsa fall in love, fueling one anothers rehabilitation, facing the perils of polio and adolescence hand in hand, and scandalizing the prudish staff of The Golden Age. Meanwhile, Frank and Elsas parents must cope with their changing realities. Elsas mother Margaret, who has given up everything to be a perfect mother, must reconcile her hopes and dreams with her daughters sickness. Franks parents, transplants to Australia from a war-torn Europe, are isolated newcomers in a country that they do not love and that does not seem to love them. Franks mother Ida, a renowned pianist in Hungary, refuses to allow the western deserts of Australia to become her home. But her husband, Meyer, slowly begins to free himself from the past and integrate into a new society. With tenderness and humor, The Golden Age tells a deeply moving story about illness and recovery. It is a book about learning to navigate the unfamiliar, about embracing music, poetry, death, and, most importantly, life. Awards 2015 Patrick White Literary Award 2015 Kibble Literary Award Queensland Premier's Award for Fiction New South Wales Premier's People's Choice Award From the Trade Paperback edition.

Look what arrived! @CarolynM I couldn‘t wait to open it I‘m sorry 😂 There was a little tear in the wrapping and I was like “well I have to open it then”. It was probably because I could smell chocolate! This is such a lovely gift. The book was on my TBR and it sounds perfect for me. I‘m in love with the snowman (already on the tree) the Santa pen and the bookmark. Obviously the chocolate! ⬇️

Centique And the cold brew teas I am hiding from my daughter who will steal them if she sees them! I hope my package for you turns up soon and there is also a book coming from Book Depository. Thank you so much for your kindness! 😍 3y

1. Atlanta, GA (“OTP” for you fellow Atlantans)
2. The Golden Age (tagged). Of course it‘s a Europa edition 😂 as I‘m trying to get through the backlog of Europas on my shelves.
3. 250-350 p. depending on genre. On the lower end for crime novels and true crime, but on the higher end for literary fiction.
4. @Tamra as we‘ve both been on a Litsy hiatus

Meet Max our new dog.
I loved this book @CarolynM thanks for the gift!
#doublespin #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

This story is set in a children‘s polio hospital right here in Perth in 1954.It is about Frank a 13 yr old polio surviver and his parents who are Hungarian refugees. The book looks at Franks displacement to the hospital and his parents displacement to Australia. It is a beautifully written story of love, family and home.

CarolynM @LeeRHarry @Soozee I thought Dianne was the most consistently interesting character in The Good Wife so her being the focus of the spin off made sense to me. And bringing Marissa and Luca along was a very good decision. 6y

I loved this one, so satisfying. First book I've read set in a polio hospital.Fascinating to read about the lives of children in one of those places, especially as the child Frank and parents were Hungarian refugees, "New Australians". What happens to childhood love, what is the long term effect of having that devastating illness, and how does that kind of experience change one's assimilation into a new country?

When my husband went to our indie bookseller looking for a Christmas gift, he asked for something not too sappy with good characters. This was the recommendation, and I agree with the assessment. I was close to the end before I felt truly invested in the characters. The author described the immigrant experience and the common struggles faced by both the patients and the parents as they each faced loneliness, judgment and misunderstanding.

Spiderfelt Alas, it has been confirmed yet again that my bookseller, as much as I love his shop, does not have a similar taste in books. This title made it on his Best Reads of 2016 list. While there is nothing overtly wrong with this book, it wouldn't make it into my top 50 of last year (I finished 109). 7y

Well written, but missing most of the elements that are generally considered necessary for a "plot." It was very short, and all the secondary characters got their own chapters that I optimistically assumed would come together in a brilliant John-Irving-like denouement, but ended up just being character sketches. Very good character sketches -- but still ...

Meanwhile, I can't figure out who these two people on the cover are supposed to be.

MrBook Nice review! 8y
ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled That last sentence is pretty funny - I hate it when covers are perplexing like that! 8y
Beetle Loved your review and particularly your parting shot! 8y
Spiderfelt Exactly! @ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled I read your review just after beginning the book, which meant I was constantly on the lookout for some hint as to the significance of the cover art. 7y
Spiderfelt I had the same feelings about the story, the characters and the book as @Yossarian Sadly, this book was recommended to my husband by our local indie bookseller, who I realize does not have tastes aligned with mine. This title was in his year end Best Reads of '16 list. 7y

So, not to go all "Comic Book Guy" from the Simpsons on you, but a boy who survived World War II, and is now in a polio convalescing home at age 13 (so, math and history says this is a few years before 1958) will not be poring over "much handled Spider-Man comics," since Spider-Man debuted in 1962.

Small things like that bug me.

LibrarianJen Ugh. I pick up on things like that all the time too. It's not that hard to get time periods of events right in the age of Google! 8y

PenguinInFlight @kmdartist I literally LOLed at that. 😂👍🏻 8y
JessieHeninger But, that's not a small thing. That could have easily been avoided with a little research. Especially when there were other comics out at that time. Historical fiction lives and dies on research. 8y
TsahaiMakeda I concur. If you're going to do it, do it right! 8y
meggofrank Preach. 8y
OrangeMooseReads That's a major issue. The author should have at least done a damn google search. Grrr! Historical inaccuracies of any kind bother me. 8y

You might think that a story set in a polio convalescent home in the 1950s would be depressing -- and it is -- but by adding flashbacks to Nazi-occupied Hungary during World War II, the author has succeeded in making children dying in iron lungs the comparatively LESS depressing part.

Demelza At the risk of sounding utterly morbid, I would actually quite like to read that. 8y

I had heard this was great and was going to save it for next trip to Australia, but then I saw it at the library and that plan was abandoned! It really is good - well-developed sense of place (Perth) and time (just after WWII) and a quietly developing love story. Definitely recommended.
