"I bought the milk," said my father. "I walked out of the corner shop, and heard a noise like this: t h u m m t h u m m. I looked up and saw a huge silver disc hovering in the air above Marshall Road.""Hullo," I said to myself. "That's not something you see every day. And then something odd happened."Find out just how odd things get in this hilarious New York Times bestselling story of time travel and breakfast cereal, expertly told by Newbery Medalist and bestselling author Neil Gaiman and illustrated by Skottie Young.

I had no idea until I got this from the library that it‘s illustrated by Skottie Young of I Hate Fairyland. The drawings are wonderful, and remind me of some of Roald Dahl‘s illustrations.

This is a great Middle Grade story, told by a Dad in explanation of why it took him so long to go out and buy milk. You never know what sorts of trouble can befall you when you run to the corner store!

tjwill Interesting. The edition I have is illustrated by Chris Riddell. I didn‘t know there were different versions! 1d

A father went out to buy some milk and a whole lot of weird stuff happen that caused his delay...fortunately the milk saves the day. Gaiman, with his wit and imagination pulled off such a fun story. It‘s bonkers and funny. I got this when my kid was 7 years old and she loved it. Riddell‘s illustrations bring the book to life and the father in the story resembles the author!

Completed another audio book by Mr. Gaiman himself, I so enjoy how he reads his own stories. This was such a fun story, it‘s an hour long and it full of funny, silly, and wacky imagination that a child would love. Very adorable story.

It‘s been a quiet few days for me on Litsy because we‘ve been at C2E2, Chicago‘s version of Comic Con. Super fun & the highlight every year is seeing Skottie Young. I first came across his work in Gaiman‘s Fortunately, The Milk. From there...I Hate Fairyland, Bully Wars, Deadpool, & Middlewest. (And the wider, very cool world of comics generally.) Got a lot of comics signed & even came home with an original sketch (a self portrait) this year. 😍

A dad runs out to buy milk for his children‘s breakfast and gets caught up with pirates and aliens in a very silly adventure. Honestly, not my favorite by Gaiman, but I did enjoy listening to him read it.

I decided to listen to another kid's chapter book while I #audioclean in preparation for the little one. This was a fun, little, one-hour romp from one wild scenario to the next. Great for kids or adults! And it all starts when the dad goes down to the corner store for some milk...

My smallest feegle child is screen time free (read: decided to experiment with expletives in the chat box on her game and got busted) this week. These are her alternatives in between a whole lot of discussions about appropriate behaviour. AKA when and where we swear and why

Vertabrain Lol!! How old is your daughter? My two heathens are 14, and like to push their verbal boundaries too. 🤭😂 1y
PeanutButterPie @Vertabrain embarrassingly under 10 but over 5. When confronted she only managed to use the first letter of each word she‘d typed. She just wanted to test them out. 😐 1y
Vertabrain Haha! Nothing to be embarrassed about. It just shows she‘s not afraid to push boundaries, or test limits, which are ingredients in the recipe for growing a strong, courageous human. In the meantime, the parenting struggle is real. 😂Hang in there, Mama. You got this. 😉 (edited) 1y

A fun, silly children's book about a father's story of why he took so long at the store buying milk. It would make a great read aloud for an early elementary schooler. The illustrations aren't my favorite style but definitely add to the story.

The whole thing would have gone a lot quicker if someone hadn't been actively pushing the book from my hand. Beagle supper time it is!

#ScenesFromABook #NeedToGetGroceries

The whole story is centered around a father explaining to his children why it took him so long to go to the store and buy milk so that they could eat their cereal.

Its absolutely brilliant in the way that only Neil Gaiman can pull off. Also, the illustrations by Skottie Young (I hate Fairyland) are 👌.

GrilledCheeseSamurai @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TricksyTails I have a hard time with audio. I always forget I'm supposed to be paying attention. 😁 I'd like to try listening to Gaiman narrate something though. 😍 2y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @GrilledCheeseSamurai He narrates it and yes, I agree it all depends on a good narrator. 2y
TricksyTails Wait. You've never heard Gaiman narrate? ? We must fix this! I used to have a hard time with audio too. My mind would always wander but you get used to it and become a better "listener" the more you do it. I'm going to vote you start with something by Gaiman because he WILL hold your attention. He's phenomenal on audio. So no podcasts either? 2y
GrilledCheeseSamurai @TricksyTails I have to literally watch my podcasts. Even if they're just sitting around talking into mics. 😂 Is there an audio for Good Omens that Neil narrates? That's my next Gaiman re-read. 🤔 2y
TricksyTails Sadly, no, but the audio is very good! Also, BBC did a full cast adaptation with cameos from Gaiman and Pratchett. I reread Good Omens every year! Will you let me know, maybe I can read along with you? 2y

Neil Gaiman could narrate the TV Guide and I‘d be transfixed. My son doesn‘t take naps anymore so we listen to audiobooks for quiet time. I got this one on Overdrive and we‘re loving it.

Heideschrampf Ha, i'd re-establish nap time, if neil gaiman would be there too! 2y
haileybean @Heideschrampf right?? My son is 4 and instead of fighting with him for a nap we have an hour of quiet where he can do (for the most part) what he wants as long as it‘s quiet. (Tablets are not allowed) if he picks the audiobook he can color while it plays. Today he picked the audiobook and it was a little over an hour and he was quiet for the whole thing. Thank you Neil Gaiman! Lol 2y

This #audiobook, narrated by Gaiman himself, was an utter delight to listen to! When a father arrives home after taking too long to pick up milk from the store, he tells his children a wild story explaining his lateness, involving time travel, aliens, dinosaurs, pirates, & a lot of action. I loved the mundane framing device and the absolute craziness of the story! This is sure to be a fun read for children & adults alike!
