North Of Normal
North Of Normal: A Memoir of My Wilderness Childhood, My Unusual Family, and How I Survived Both | Cea Sunrise Person
In the late 1960s, riding the crest of the counterculture movement, Ceas family left a comfortable existence in California to live off the land in northern Alberta. But unlike most commune dwellers of the time, the Persons werent trying to build a new societythey wanted to escape civilization altogether. Led by Ceas grandfather Dick, they lived in a canvas Teepee, grew pot, and hunted and gathered to survive. Living out her grandparents dream with her teenage mother, Michelle, young Cea knew little of the world beyond her forest. She spent her summers playing nude in the meadow and her winters snowshoeing behind the grandfather she idolized. Despite fierce storms, food shortages and the occasional drug-and-sex-infused party for visitors, it was a happy existence. For Michelle, however, there was one crucial element missing: a man. When Cea was five, Michelle took her on the road with a new boyfriend. As the trio set upon a series of ill-fated adventures, Cea began to question both her highly unusual world and the hedonistic woman at the centre of itquestions that eventually evolved into an all-consuming search for a more normal life. Finally, in her early teens, Cea realized she would have to make a choice as drastic as the one her grandparents once had made in order to get the life she craved. From nature child to international model by the age of thirteen, Ceas astonishing saga is one of long-held family secrets and extreme family dysfunction, all in an incredibly unusual setting. It is also the story of one girls deep-seated desire for normalitya desire that enabled her to risk everything, overcome adversity and achieve her dreams.

This book will hurt to read or listen to. The resilience of the author to be able to live through the childhood she had as a child in a family of "hippies " is a testament to what children can endure. Her family lived in the wilderness of the Yukon and other places. He favorite food was bear meat. So much in this book will blow your mind. I recommend.

Perfect dedication for a buddy read book with my Mum!

We both really liked this one. A wild wilderness upbringing, survivalist family, nudity, drugs, thievery, mental illness, family love...never a dull moment in this book! Hard to put this one down.

North of Normal fits well on a shelf with The Glass Castle and Educated. It‘s a memoir of an unusual childhood and a family fraught with mental illness. Cea is frank about living in a teepee, a truck, vacation cabins broken into during the off season. Brought up with nudity and drugs and sex in front of her throughout childhood. What a life she‘s had!

I read this in just a couple days, and it kept me turning pages way past bedtime. Memorable!

Crazeedi The glass castle stayed with me for weeks. I now need to read this 3y

Thank you Holly for this terrific birthday collection 💜. It‘s going to be hard to choose which to read first!

This has been compared to Educated and The Glass Castle, which is spot on. Cea grew up with one of the most dysfunctional families I could have imagined. I‘ve been struggling to find a book to keep my attention recently and this one did the trick. #bathandbook

Thank you @monalyisha for organizing #NewYearWhoDis and for doing a giveaway. I love these list swaps! It is fun to see what another reader recommends. I read two memoirs by Canadian women, and I would never have heard of these books without @michellelav The tagged book was my favorite. I still plan to read others off her list.

From these two lists, the ones I own are The Lady from The Black Lagoon, The Poet X, Sing Unburied Sing, and Circe.

This memoir of the author‘s unconventional (to say the least) childhood draws comparisons with The Glass Castle and Educated. They all made me grateful for my own childhood! This one was hard to read emotionally, as she deals with neglect and abuse but also a page turner. I needed to know how her life turned out. Read for #NewYearWhoDis from the list of @michellelav [Spoiler in comments]

MallenNC I was very impressed by the author‘s willingness to come to a place of understanding, even forgiveness, for her parents and grandparents as an adult. I don‘t know that I could have done that. 4y
michellelav @MallenNC I know!! It was crazy for me to believe that she didn't cut ties with her family once she got older! I was so happy to hear about how much she loved her children and couldn't imagine them living the way she had. I was pleased that she saw the toxicity of her family and broke the cycle! Im so happy you enjoyed the book! I just picked up The Five today after work! Can't wait to start 🤓 4y
MallenNC @michellelav I was so glad she had found happiness. The picture of her with husband and kids made me very glad. I hope you like The Five. It is very difficult to read but I thought it was well done. 4y
monalyisha Ughhhhh I want to read the comments so badly but I also want to read the book so I can‘t! Haha. So interested in this one. Glad it was a pick for you! 🙌🏻 4y
MallenNC @monalyisha Don‘t read the comments! It was a fast read for me and without Michelle‘s list I‘d wouldn‘t have even heard of the book. 4y

So this helped me to break out of my reading slump and I finished it in less than a day. The family dynamics are bizarre and at times really sad, but this kind of memoir is my kryptonite. I can say it was not quite as good as my favs (Educated, and The Glass Castle), but definitely a pick if you are into disturbing family of origin stories #24in48

Finished my pick for #LMPBC. There was a lot to take in with this book. Though I don't want to say too much before my group gets a chance to read it. Very comparable to Educated by Tara Westover. How these women survived let alone thrived, despite their upbringings, is incredible. I can't wait to read my groups thoughts on it all.

A fascinating and alarming memoir about a childhood spent in the woods and on the run. Cea Sunrise Person grew up living in tents in the Yukon wilderness and squatting in unoccupied summer cottages in Alberta.

Excellent on audio. Trigger warnings for child sexual abuse.

Interesting story. Sure don‘t agree with how they lived, and the poor girl had such a crazy life. I liked that she continued her story, though not in as much detail or in nearly as many chapters, into her teen years and adulthood and how she dealt with her unusual background. People compare her dysfunctional family life with Jeanette Walls “The Glass Castle”. It‘s been a few years since I read it, but the neglectful adults sure fit the theme!

First read of 2017. My book club is reading this one for discussion. Love that I have a signed copy of this one. Such a great read. My favourite line in the book - "There didn't need to be an end, and as long as there was love, the rest could fall away." This is the poignant revelation Cea has after years of emotional struggle with her mother and the life she came to live with her counter culture family.
