This book is a graphic novel and perfect for middle school students as it is filled with friendship and magic. The book is very appealing to young readers as it is an innovative way of telling the story. I can use this book in a classroom to explore the concepts of fantasy and comics through various activities.

This speculative fiction book, Beetle & the Hollowbones, by Aliza Layne shares the story about a young goblin witch, Beetle, and her two friends, Blob Ghost and Kat Hollowbones. This story is spooky and filled with friendship as it takes you on a journey of Beetle trying to save her friend, Blob Ghost, from a haunted mall with the help of her friend, Kat.

blurb

This story is meant for children between eight and twelve years old. I would agree as it is structured as a graphic novel. Which provides young children with both a quick and easy reading opportunity. I personally enjoyed the illustrations depicted throughout the story. The pages were bursting with orange, purple, yellow, and blue hues, to me creating very spooky, Halloween vibes.

This story is an example of speculative fiction as it possesses elements including supernatural creatures such as a goblin, witch, and ghost. It also incorporates magic. The main characters in this story are Beetle the goblin, Blob Ghost, and Kat the witch. Beetle spends a lot of time with her friend BG who haunts the local mall and cannot leave. Beetle's old friend Kat returns to their hometown with her aunt who is determined to destroy the mall.

blurb

This is a good book to read around Halloween time with students in a book club. It is fun and engaging because it is set up as a graphic novel.

This speculative fiction book follows a goblin named Beetle. She lives with her grandma and spends a lot of time with her friend who is a ghost and haunts the mall. Her aunt comes to town to teach her magic. The story follows her life.

Blurb:
This book is a graphic novel and speculative fiction. It is in comic form but with characters that would not be real in the real world. This book could be used during Halloween time and when doing a unit on graphic novels or speculative fiction.

Review:
This is a speculative book because it has ghosts, witches, skeletons that talk, talking pumpkins, and half-pumpkin half-human characters. These characters would not be real in real life but are in the book.

A cute and cool graphic novel. There were a few panels I had a hard time following, but they all came together in the end. Thanks @ElizaMarie

ElizaMarie I am glad you liked it. It was just cutesy nothing heavy which sometimes is where it is at! 2y
jb72 @ElizaMarie Exactly that! Something fun to read. I love nonfiction but sometimes I want to read fun and fluffy. 2y

The last MG graphic novel for #LMPC Group A was fabulous! Very experiential. No page numbers or right angled panels… I found this to be a slow read, but a completely immersive one. The art and text blended surprisingly well, and I could feel myself there with the characters and see everything they were doing around me. For me this was a 5 ⭐️ read even though I found the storyline fun but not remarkable, just because the characters were so bright.

⭐ ⭐ ⭐ ⭐5 ⭐
Beetle is a goblin. She wants to do more than magic, she wants to do sorcery, but as a goblin, that is not in the pages for her. But still she must learn from her grandma the ways of the goblin. Her best friend is Blob Ghost (BG) but they cannot leave the mall. Yes the shopping mall, that is almost empty. They have to find a way out. Not only has Beetle‘s old friend and crush Kat come back to town, her aunt is going to tear

LibrarianRyan down the mall!. The two friends have to find a way to save BG, come to terms with their feelings for each other, and figure out who really has all the power. After all, Aunt Hollowbones is out to get them. This book was just adorable. It has adventure, it has magic, it has heart, and all sorts of other feelings. The storytelling is spot on, and the art is amazing!. This will be a book I will be telling others to read for years to come. 2y

Chrissyreadit @CaseyTheCanadianLesbrarian full disclosure that cracks me up- my daughter has claimed I don‘t expand my exposure to more lgbtq because I don‘t watch a lot of movies - but I don‘t watch movies in general- I read- and even though I find I‘m reading more and more books with sexual diversity I‘m making more of an effort to actively seek books I can read and recommend to her! So I loved this! And am going to share it with her and her girlfriend ❤️ 3y

These are two of the best graphic novels I've read this year! They are aimed for a younger audience but they are just absolutely so whimsical, magical, and perfect that I think a person of any age would love them! 😍 I originally read them through my library but adored them so much I had to get my own copies! 💕📚

This middle grade graphic novel was just the cutest. Beetle is a goblin witch learning to do magic with her gran when she finds out the mall which her non-binary friend Ghost Blob is doomed to haunt is going to torn down. By who? Power-hungry Marla Hollowbone, whose niece Kat, a cat skeleton sorceress, is back in town. Can Beetle and Kat save Ghost Blob and admit their feelings for each other? Gorgeous Halloweeny art and endearing characters!
