🎧 This was a book you need to follow rather closely.

The chapters skip in time and POV. The story is told by a few friends who have gathered at a hunting lodge for NYE

There are shocking revelations. The story takes strange turns. Twisty.

It was a somewhat believable collection of friends but the premise was meh. Still a fun romp & a good audiobook.

⭐️⭐️⭐️3/4

Great suspense. Didn‘t connect with any characters extremely well but was definitely kept on edge the whole time. It was a surprise ending. Wanted more on how everyone turned out in the end

This is a pretty solid mystery, but it was just okay for me. I admit that the identity of the killer took me by surprise, but I did figure out the identity of the victim (also a mystery in the book). If you‘re a fan of the “group of people trapped in an isolated location” trope, you might want to check it out!

This book was a fun book to read with a cup of tea and nothing else to do. Definitely not a ‘thinker‘ of a book, but a little joy ride of a murder mystery.

Not. A. Fan. Despite the short chapter breaks this one was a slog and a half. It got to the point I didn‘t care who was being murdered let alone which “guest” was doing the killing. Not what you want from a suspense thriller. #readingchallenge2022

Compared to my last read, I thought this was worlds better. Multiple first person POVs and jumps in time to before and after the suspicious murder. I don‘t always like first person, but I felt like I knew the characters much more thoroughly in this book. The plot itself was pretty good, with some good red herrings.

This was too slowly paced for a thriller. It just went on and on and I didn't care. I got half way through then gave up and flicked to the end to see how it ended

Unbelievably boring

Reminds me a lot of the Guest List. Had some good twists and turns, kept me on my toes! Lucy Foley makes great characters that you love to hate.

I hope Heather & Doug have the happy ending they deserve.

I liked this but for all the build up it was a bit anticlimactic. I loved all the red herrings (even if it was obvious they were such) and the writing helped make up for the thin plot. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This book was okay. I felt it was very slow-medium paced though for a thriller/mystery novel. I also didn‘t care much for the characters. The ending surprised me though so that‘s why I give it 3 ⭐️‘s. Book 5/52 #52booksayearchallenge

Loved it! Foley can really weave a mystery - unlikable characters, remote location, red herrings, and I love how she doesn‘t reveal killer or victim until very late in the story.

Happy New Year, all y‘all!!‘ I am calling this #BookspinBingo for December. Picked up my #Bookspin and #Doublespin along with a couple of #BookspinBingo completions. I started The Hunting Party this morning and finished it this afternoon. Foley knows how to create a suspenseful atmosphere with morally grey characters. Her endings feel a little too pat, but I enjoyed this virtual visit to Scotland for New Year‘s Eve! ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Well this was fun! A classic murder mystery in an isolated location in the Scottish Highlands. Great characters to hate, fast paced writing and a plot that kept me guessing till the end. Just the sorta fluff my harangued brain needed right now. 😆 👍

Sometimes I read or watch something about a really tight-knit group of friends and I wish I had that. Then I read something like The Hunting Party and I think "Nah, I'm good, thanks". This novel is a very slow burn on the murder-y bits, but quick to show how these 14-year old friendships have devolved into cattiness, resentment & hate. Nine friends are at a Lodge in the Scottish Highlands for an annual New Year Holiday & early on someone dies. ⬇️

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick However, the story slowly unravels through the "now" and days prior to the death. Who is it? Who did it? Keep listening. Yes, there is a reveal in there somewhere. Just keep listening.
The audiobook was great, with a different narrator for each POV we see: Miranda, the perfect one; Katie, the single one; Emma, the outsider; and also Doug and Heather, each of the two employees at the lodge. I think this format helped me to differentiate ⬇️

9mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick the events between people since they all had a distinct voice. I can't say the book was overly compelling, nor was I just dying to know what happened, but it was interesting. A low pick.

This is my favorite type of mystery book. A modern Agatha Christie. Not bloody/gory, not too many jump scenes or scary/wild villains, just a mystery about when things go wrong in a group of friend over NYE… and someone ends up dead. 😉 I couldn‘t predict the killer, but I also am notoriously bad at predictions!
8/10 will definitely keep reading this author

Meh...I loved The Guest List. This one, not so much; maybe because it was the same characters or the setting of a lodge in a snow storm.

Kimberlone Funny, I felt the opposite! But I read Ten Hunting Party first and much preferred that one. Maybe it just has to do with the order you read them; the plot/premise is so similar by the time you read the second one it feels stale? 10mo

July book 3:
Close to a so-so if only bc it was not as good as The Guest List and very similar in many ways.
Things I liked: Foley's shtick where who died is as much the mystery as who killed them; how motives are revealed (everyone has one... Or two...)
Things that were meh: more red herrings in this than others of her books, I found most twists predictable, overall weirdness in parts.

The wilderness of the Scottish highlands is brought to life in this mystery where a group of old university friends got together for a New Year‘s Eve holiday. There are quite a lot of characters, with multiple POVs but they are all awful people. The author kept me guessing not just the identity of the killer but the victim as well. Nicely done. Formulaic plot but moves at a good pace, and reveals a few twists. Overall an enjoyable read.

Very similar format to The Guest List: large cast of characters (ahem..suspects) gathered for a celebration. Suddenly, something goes wrong. A person is dead. The timeline becomes shuffled as we learn of present and past events until all is revealed. I was a little disappointed at the lack of originality with the plot format, but was entertained with the story.

My goals for #JoysofJune is to simply read when I want, and what I want, with no mindset of challenge goals being met. I want to enjoy outdoor reading. I am not setting an amount of books or hours, as I know I will be preparing kids for camps and chaos will be sure to come. I just want to focus on taking joy in relaxing with a book. Not my typical goals but exactly what I need for me. @Andrew65
