The Outlander
The Outlander | Gil Adamson
On a moonlit night in 1903, a mysterious young woman flees alone across the Canadian wilderness, one quick step ahead of her pursuers. Mary Boulton is nineteen years old, half mad, and widowed - by her own hand. Tearing through the forest with dogs howling in the distance, she is desperate, her nerves burning, and she is certain of one thing only - that her every move is being traced. Two red-headed brothers, rifles across their backs, lurch close behind her: monstrous figures, identical in every way, with the predatory look of hyenas. She has murdered their brother, and their cold lust for vengeance is unswerving. As the widow scrambles to stay ahead of them, the burden of her existence disintegrates into a battle in which the dangers of her own mind become more menacing than the dangers of the night. Along the way, the steely outlaw encounters a changing cast of misfits and eccentrics. Some, like the recluse known as 'The Ridgerunner', provide a brief respite from her solitude; others, like the Reverend Bonnycastle, offer support only to reveal that they too have their own demons raging inside. As she is plunged further away from civilisation, her path from retribution to redemption slowly unfurls. A startling transformation of the classic western narrative, The Outlander is the haunting tale of one young woman's deliberate journey deep into the wild.

I did it! I finished another book! 😅

A Canadian western, set in 1903 following Mary Boulton as she flees into the wilderness after killing her husband. Tracked by his relentless brothers, she endures a whole lot and encounters some fascinating characters. I loved the writing style and the story—excellent historical fiction escapism with a beautiful setting. I liked it so much I am sending it for my postal book club!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Getting in some outdoor reading time before the heat gets to be too much. Has anyone else's weather gone from snow to heat warnings in the last two weeks?

BookmarkTavern We didn‘t quite get down to snow temps, but we bounced from 40 degrees up to 78 in two days. 😬 4y
rabbitprincess At the Ottawa airport it was 34 Celsius, feels like 40 🥵 We installed the air conditioner today! 4y
TheKidUpstairs @rabbitprincess ugh, that's hot! But yay for AC!!! 4y
TheAromaofBooks Not quite snow, but close! And we definitely went from having the furnace on to running the AC in less than 48hrs 😐 4y

One positive from these past months is that I've rediscovered the joy and comfort of rereading old favourites. It's like an all encompassing hug from an old friend. I got Ridgerunner for Mother's Day, so I'm revisiting Outlander before I dive into the sequel.

Nothing better than beer with a book on the label. Except maybe when the book is one of your absolute favourites.

For the record: Masala Munch pairs super well with Cucumber Mint Ale.

@Avanders is hosting a super generous #JanuaryJoy #giveaway!! 😍🎉😍🎉

I couldn't pick just one! Lots of bookish discussions over the holidays, and Born a Crime, Beartown, and Kindred were my top recommendations for books I read in 2017. The Outlander is my all time top recommended book, I think more people should discover Adamson's brilliant and beautiful writing.

Thanks for spreading so much joy, @Avanders !!

I often find myself frustrated with my reading speed - I've never been a quick reader but I can recall parts of books I've read long ago. I try to be thankful for this part of reading and try to enjoy every moment of it.

TheKidUpstairs It's all a trade-off. I read quickly, but forget details so easily. Hope you're still enjoying the book! 6y
Cinfhen I read a ton but don't remember half of it so I'd say you're in better shape 😊 6y

The plot is quite basic (widow "by her own hand" flees into Canadian mountains, doggedly pursued by her intimidating brothers-in-law). The language is elaborate and lovely. The characters we meet along the way are the most amazing and loveable string of lunatic misfits. This book is all about the characters.

Leniverse Thank you all! :) Update: I managed to finish Twelfth Night today, and I'm making excellent progress on Kim. Jack London is a collection, so I can pause after each part. Simone de Beauvoir I need to take piecemeal anyway. The Outlander I think might become the kind where the pages turn themselves once I get properly into it. It is working itself out. Whew. But more books are calling me from the Kindle and from the shelf... 7y

Mehso-so

I was really excited for this book, but it dragged in some places and sped in others. I was never very invested in any of the characters, things were very neatly resolved in the end and I wanted to shake her senseless in the last few paragraphs. It was interesting, so it gets a so-so, but I wouldn't pick it again.
