Can You Help Me?
Can You Help Me?: Inside the Turbulent World of Huntington Disease | Thomas D. Bird
5 posts | 1 to read
Can You Help Me?: Living in the Turbulent World of Huntington Disease shares the surprising, insightful, challenging, and even encouraging stories of patients and their families who live with Huntington Disease. Having seen patients for more than 40 years, Dr Thomas Bird, a pioneer neurogeneticist, adds a human touch to this genetic brain disease that devastates persons during mid-life when they can least afford it. With a brief history of Huntington Disease and the occasional scientific detail, the true heart of the book is the human experience of the disorder: - The man who cannot stay out of prison because he is addicted to being a burglar. - Another man shoots and kills his roommate while watching television and cannot explain why he did it. - The woman with Huntington Disease copes with her depression by using Texas line dancing. - A twelve year old girl with juvenile Huntington Disease who can barely walk and talk, but her classmates rally around with touching and heartfelt support. - And the 72 year old man with late onset Huntington Disease and severe depression is made worse by ECT, but improved (for a while) with Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation. These are just some of the compelling stories of people of all ages and in all walks of life who feel trapped by a progressive degenerative brain disease from which there is no escape.

How do prize drawings work on Litsy? If I want to host one for 2023 how would I get started? There are so many fun ways that I see folks keeping their reading lives fresh that I don‘t know how to jump in- e.g. I can‘t figure out bingo, double spin thing. But in 2022 I did join a couple discussions, group prompts, and read alongs. I have never had such a great reading year. I think I want to host something next year and a giveaway sounds fun.

Lizpixie I usually keep a list of peoples usernames that have entered then at drawing I write each one on a slip of paper and have the hubby draw one out. I‘ve also put a number next to each name then uses number generator online to choose. Either way works great👍 2y
Lizpixie You can have a theme for each month so when a person reads a book corresponding to that months theme & posts it with your tags, it‘s an entry? 2y
Liz_M The people that host #Booked2022 do a quarterly drawing. @BarbaraTheBibliophage, @Cinfhen, @alisiakae can you offer advice here? (edited) 2y

BarbaraTheBibliophage Hi @Sapphire - we use two Google Forms to track our challenge and its drawings. First, one form to collect signups. Then a second form to collect entries into our drawings. You can email me to discuss further. Barbara the Bibliophage at Gmail dot com. 👩🏼‍🦳 2y
Sapphire Thank you all. I have a couple ideas bubbling. When I have it a bit more formed I will reach out to see if it makes sense or the best way. Plan on starting small - Like a short time frame of a month and the give away is a gift certificate to an Indy bookstore. Just something fun and easy. 2y
Cinfhen Sounds great!!! Good luck 🍀 2y

Hi, Littens. I‘m trying to remember a book. It‘s backlist literary fiction, and a poor, possibly Southern or just small-town girl falls for her young English teacher. They run off together and he becomes controlling. She‘s stuck in the house while he works. She reads books and tries to come up with a plan to leave. This wasn‘t romance and was kind of under the radar. I can‘t remember the title. Does that poorly written summary sound familiar?

Lcsmcat I have no idea, but I have had good luck with the “what‘s the name of that book” group on Goodreads. 3y
Erinreadsthebooks @lcsmcat Thank you! I'll give that a try. 3y

Since I can‘t walk into my local library or bookstore right now, can I get some recs from librarians and book sellers here on Litsy for the April prompt??? #ReadwithMrBook

Texreader Whoa! Didn‘t think of that! Include me on any recommendations you get! Lots of librarians here on Litsy so we should be good! 4y
LibrarianRyan Got a list of what you own? Or if your looking for something free online I have been listening 20000 leagues under the sea. I thought I knew this story but nope. It‘s a little slow but it is a free listen. 4y
amber_ldsmom @LibrarianRyan It doesn‘t have to be free or something I own. I‘ll just order it from Amazon. I do own 20,000 Leagues, though, if you want to stick with that recommendation. 4y

LibrarianRyan @amber_ldsmom it has been very good. I read the great illustrated classic as a child and there was so much left out of it. I quite enjoyed my audiobook listen. I have about an hour left b 4y
LibrarianBecky Well a recommendation .. so many possibilities .. recently I‘ve really liked “where the crawdads sing”, “PS I love you”, “Tatooist of Auschwitz and Cilkas Journey”. Some all time favs are “The Help”, “The Shack”, “The chronicles of Narnia series”, “The Shining and Doctor Sleep”, “Carrie”! Seriously I can keep going. If you have a fav genre I can go from there! 4y
amber_ldsmom @LibrarianBecky I LOVE ghost/haunted house stories and horror (but not too gruesome). Also love the classics and historical fiction. 😁 4y
LibrarianBecky Well the Shining is perfect .. creepy and scary but not too gruesome! I love historical fiction also .. I‘m pretty sure any historical fiction book on my list was a great read!! 4y
MrBook @amber_ldsmom , looks like you‘re covered. 😆🙌🏻 4y
MrBook @Texreader , how about you? What kind of reads do you prefer? 4y
Texreader @MrBook historical fiction. I‘d love your recommendations! 4y
MrBook @Texreader If you‘re into audiobooks specifically, “Middlesex” and “Z: A Novel of Zelda Fitzgerald”. If you want something very well written, maybe “The Island of Sea Women” or “A Gentleman in Moscow”. 🙂 (edited) 4y
amber_ldsmom @LibrarianBecky I loved The Shining, so I think it would be fun to read Dr. Sleep! 4y

Hey y‘all. So, since my last post, I‘ve started 11 books and finished zilch, nada, zip! 🤦🏻‍♀️ So no bedside snippets.

My pain level is so not good. 😭 I can‘t wait for surgery. I am so lucky to have so much support, though. Thank you!! ❤️🥰❤️

I have, however, finished 2.5 seasons of Hell‘s Kitchen on Amazon Prime. 🤷🏻‍♀️👩🏻‍🍳 So big kisses to my Gordon Ramsay poster! 😘😘😂

Scochrane26 Sorry you‘re going through such a rough time. Pain doesn‘t help you concentrate on reading. I like watching Nailed It! when sick. 5y

Meaw_catlady Sending you healing hugs!!! I‘m here if you need to talk or just need some positive energies !! 5y
marleed Positive thoughts to the universe sent your way! 5y
Lizpixie I totally empathise, when it comes to pain I completely understand how bad it can get. I find audiobooks or music in headphones can help, or those ambient sounds apps or even YouTube can help as well. I also found favourite movies can help, like the Potter movies, Practical Magic, etc. Audiopuzzling or colouring too, basically anything that can distract you. I hope you feel better soon❤️❤️❤️ 5y
faelinwolf *hugs* Don't forget to breathe, Meg! Nice deep breaths if you can 5y
LeahBergen Sending ❤️❤️. When I binge Gordon Ramsey I find myself dreaming about him. 😳😆😆 5y
Megabooks @Scochrane26 That‘s a good series idea! Thanks! We‘re taking a Roku to Dallas because we‘ll be there for 2 weeks and I think I‘d go through streaming withdrawal. 😂 4y
Megabooks @Jas16 🥰😊😊 4y
Megabooks @Come-read-with-me Thanks! 💜 4y
Megabooks @Meaw_catlady Thank you!! I really appreciate it!! If you have time/strength to send any energies on the 28th when I have surgery, I‘d appreciate it! When I concentrate on my breathing when I‘m really in pain, it seriously feels like I‘m expelling fire and trying to take in something cool to quell the inflammation. 💙💙💙 4y
Megabooks @marleed Thank you!! 💜🥰💜 4y
Megabooks @Lizpixie Thanks for the good ideas! I‘ve been on TikTok a lot. I like the comedy, animal, and dancing videos. It‘s just kind of mindless, but fun. My arms are too weak to color now, but I‘ve been trying to find the right audiobook. You are wonderful! 💜😘💜 4y
Megabooks @faelinwolf Thank you! Breathing is so important! 4y
Megabooks @LeahBergen Thanks dear! No dreams about Gordon last night, but I have been looking up his kids up. I can‘t believe Tilly is 17 with her own show, and he just had an empty nest baby like last year! 😳 4y
IndoorDame Hang in there. Sending 🤗. I know when my pain flares up I like audiobooks of things I‘ve already read and just find comforting. 4y
Megabooks @IndoorDame Thank you!! 💙💙 I‘m having trouble finding the right audiobook, but I‘m hopeful about the one I just got! 4y
