Cleopatra
Cleopatra: A Life | Stacy Schiff
The Pulitzer Prize-winning biographer brings to life the most intriguing woman in the history of the world: Cleopatra, the last queen of Egypt. Her palace shimmered with onyx, garnets, and gold, but was richer still in political and sexual intrigue. Above all else, Cleopatra was a shrewd strategist and an ingenious negotiator.Though her life spanned fewer than forty years, it reshaped the contours of the ancient world. She was married twice, each time to a brother. She waged a brutal civil war against the first when both were teenagers. She poisoned the second. Ultimately she dispensed with an ambitious sister as well; incest and assassination were family specialties. Cleopatra appears to have had sex with only two men. They happen, however, to have been Julius Caesar and Mark Antony, among the most prominent Romans of the day. Both were married to other women. Cleopatra had a child with Caesar and--after his murder--three more with his protg. Already she was the wealthiest ruler in the Mediterranean; the relationship with Antony confirmed her status as the most influential woman of the age. The two would together attempt to forge a new empire, in an alliance that spelled their ends. Cleopatra has lodged herself in our imaginations ever since.Famous long before she was notorious, Cleopatra has gone down in history for all the wrong reasons. Shakespeare and Shaw put words in her mouth. Michelangelo, Tiepolo, and Elizabeth Taylor put a face to her name. Along the way, Cleopatra's supple personality and the drama of her circumstances have been lost. In a masterly return to the classical sources, Stacy Schiff here boldly separates fact from fiction to rescue the magnetic queen whose death ushered in a new world order. Rich in detail, epic in scope, Schiff 's is a luminous, deeply original reconstruction of a dazzling life.

It's refreshing to hear a historical account of a powerful woman without the overabundance of sexism present. Well, it's still present, as the author compares the sexist characterization depicted so far to a more realistic anti-sexist viewpoint. We need more of this! I enjoyed this book immensely and plan to purchase the hardcover for keeps in the near future. I think it's time to switch to paper... #picsart #audiobook #24in48 5⭐

This was a little textbooky for my tastes. But still an interesting read. So much is unknown about Cleopatra's life, so there was alot of assumptions made. However, the author painted a rich picture of the culture, and the social, political climate in which Cleopatra ruled. Also many important ideas about how history remembers women in power. Cleopatra is most known for her love life, and not the lasting contributions she made to the world

DivineDiana I found this book fascinating! 💗 11mo

There is no doubt that in this book is a lot of research work, and without doubt that Schiff despise Cicero and she obviously have the urge to defend Cleopatra from the evil, bad, wicked ... historians (from the Roman‘s era) and misininterpretaions of the history. And this is where my dissatisfaction lies - double standards. In her arguments, Schiff does exactly the same what she is accusing the others Cleopatra‘ biographers.

I‘m not traditionally a biography reader, so the engaging, fast-paced style of Stacy Schiff‘s writing was wonderful. I just wished her sentences didn‘t have so many asides that made me re-read out of confusion. Other than that, I appreciate what she‘s put together of Cleopatra‘s life out of what seems like so little truthful documentation! Really rich history-telling with tastefully added female author perspective about an awesome Queen.

I took my family to Oxford to show where I have gone to study for a week the past 2 summers. My mother said, “Oh, Sarah- it‘s so much more than I had expected!” The Great Hall in Christ Church had a Christmas tree and the fires going! I got to take a photo of the tree and my favorite portrait (W.H. Auden). And I stopped at Scriptum‘s to peruse their Folio Society editions and am shipping back Cleopatra, Fahrenheit 451 and Enchanted April!

Fascinating not only for its telling of the central figure‘s dramatic rise and fall, but for its exposure of the sexism — in Cleopatra‘s own time as well as through the centuries after — which belittled a formidable, fully competent queen by reducing her to a seductress, known mostly for bedding two quite famous Roman generals. Recommend for those who like historical biographies and strong, savvy women.

Women were pretty much equal in this time and place – at least in Egypt, though not necessarily in Rome or elsewhere at the time. Unfortunately, though, there is not a lot of contemporary/primary source material on Cleopatra. Also unfortunately for me, I do prefer reading about historical women, not men. Cont in comments...

LibraryCin This book (by necessity, I think) told mostly of the men who ruled at the time of Cleopatra (Julius Caesar, Mark Antony, Octavius…) and for purposes of trying to recreate her life, it feels like she‘s an afterthought in the book, always where she is and what she‘s doing in relation to these ruling men. Cont... 2y
LibraryCin Because of that, I tended to lose some interest in the book. It‘s too bad, because I really don‘t know much about her. I know a bit more now, and I‘m still rating it “ok”, but I was a bit disappointed that there wasn‘t more about her. 2y

I really enjoyed this audiobook. It covers a lot of the overlapping Roman history which I also adored. I appreciated how the author tried to give an analysis about the few contemporary reports from men who vehemently disliked Cleopatra. I also enjoyed the attempts to infer details that some people may see as taking too much of a leap. Recommend for any fans of Roman or Egyptian history! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When I was growing up, I loved the Royal Diaries series, especially the one about Cleopatra. So it's no surprise that I really enjoyed this book! In particular, I appreciate that Schiff points out where her story has been obviously influenced by sexism on the part of historians and all of the places where Cleopatra isn't given proper credit for her accomplishments.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

P.S. The endpapers are also gorgeous!

This #biography of the famous ancient queen was an enlightening read. Throughout the book, Schiff contrasts the writings of Plutarch and Cassius Dio, who wrote about Cleopatra long after her death, to show how both myth and Roman opinion have shaped the story of her life. While at times it moved at a snail's pace, it was highly informative and showed how much uncertainty surrounds ancient accounts of peoples' lives, especially polarizing ones.

This took a VERY long time to get through. I tried both the audio and print versions, and I didn't really "click" with either of them. I learned some interesting facts, but most of the book requires a lot of background knowledge about Egyptian mythology and Roman history. I really enjoy learning about badass historical women though, and the author clearly put a lot of work into this, so I'm giving it a 2.75/5.

When a woman breaks the mold, she often goes down as one of the wickedest women in history. Cleopatra is no exception. She's an intelligent, powerful woman living in a time when Roman women lived as legal minors. I love Schiff's take on a long misunderstood woman who achieved great things as the last queen of Egypt. Though her ambition eventually led to her death, Cleopatra's tenacity and grit can't be denied. Hear more about it on Ep. 17.⠀

This passage beautifully sums up the life and legacy of Cleopatra. I've been interested in Egyptian history since childhood, but this is the first book on Cleopatra I've read. It was also the first book of Stacy Schiff's I've read.
