Something in Between | Melissa de la Cruz
It feels like theres no ground beneath me, like everything Ive ever done has been a lie. Like Im breaking apart, shattering. Who am I? Where do I belong?
Jasmine de los Santos has always done whats expected of her. Pretty and popular, shes studied hard, made her Filipino immigrant parents proud and is ready to reap the rewards in the form of a full college scholarship.
And then everything shatters. A national scholar award invitation compels her parents to reveal the truth: their visas expired years ago. Her entire family is illegal. That means no scholarships, maybe no college at all and the very real threat of deportation.
For the first time, Jasmine rebels, trying all those teen things she never had time for in the past. Even as shes trying to make sense of her new world, its turned upside down by Royce Blakely, the charming son of a high-ranking congressman. Jasmine no longer has any idea whereor ifshe fits into the American Dream. All she knows is that shes not giving up. Because when the rules you lived by no longer apply, the only thing to do is make up your own.

First, awesome that the MC is a rarely heard from population—Filipino. Second, I thought this book, more so than I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter, did an excellent job portraying the immigrant experience. Although I did roll my eyes at some of the teenage angst, that goes more to my age and not the story. And while this story does have a more Disney-esque ending, I liked it because that‘s how it should be.

5/5 ⭐
It was really well written and I love that we had the chance to explore Filipino culture and to have a glimps of what it is like to be an immigrant and the struggles and hard work they have to go through. It was inspiring!
I love that there was more to the story than just romance. Theres was family issues, friendship, political matters, immigrations and more.
I love the romance, it wasn't perfect but it was cute.
I enjoy reading it.

Currently reading ☕📚
I was tired of reading YA fantasy or dystopian.
So, since it's spring and summer will be here soon, I decided to read something light and cute. Hopefully this one won't dissappoint.
Did you read it? If yes, what are your thoughts?

Thanks @JoScho for the tag!
1. It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover-I just read this one and it was so so good.
2. Sadly I rarely get asked for recommendations (very few people in my life are readers) but lately it has been the Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes.
3. That‘s a good question! What comes to mind is “It doesn‘t have to be perfect to be beautiful.”

I love what the author did with the de los Santos family: the way they end up living in the US as undocumented persons is not the story many people in my area envision when they think of "illegal immigrants" - I appreciate Jasmine's (the MC) perspective on this issue so much.

Big, timely topic these days in the US. I was hooked on how things would end! The story is not without flaws: slightly repetitive and the dialogue was often a bit juvenile.

Chachic Filipino friends who have read this have mentioned issues about how the characters viewed the Philippines. I haven't read it so can't comment yet. 7y
intothehallofbooks @Chachic From what I remember, the characters mostly talk about the beauty of the Philippines and how strict Filipino families seem to be compared to families in America. I think they wonder if it will be a stricter life if they live there. But the MC's mother does talk about living in a compound in Manila and the MC Jasmine talks about poverty and government corruption. 7y
minavesguerra I've read it (and talked about it with @Chachic). Only about how the Philippines is talked about -- the more subtle references are very dated. The parents refer to the country like it was in the 1970s when it would have been the 2000s when they moved, and the country has of course changed. 7y

Chachic Thanks for chiming in, @minavesguerra! Since I wouldn't have been able to explain.😊 7y
minavesguerra I'm not even sure I've processed all my feelings about it...but "beautiful beaches but I'd never want to live there" is a hurtful message at least to young adults who actually live here. It's not what the book is about but it is part of the fabric of it. (Thank you for the space @intothehallofbooks!) cc @Chachic 7y
intothehallofbooks @minavesguerra Okay, yes. Thank you so much for sharing this! I picked up on what you quoted above without even giving voice to it, so I certainly see the subtly being problematic. I also understand what you mean when you say that it is part of the fabric of the book even though not part of the plot. Hearing these thoughts is so valuable to me. I want to be more aware of these things when I read. Thank you @Chachic for mentioning this initially! 7y
Chachic You're more than welcome! I was initially excited to read this but now more hesitant after hearing @minavesguerra's feedback about it. 7y

I wanted to love this book, a romance loosely based on the author's experience of applying to colleges as an undocumented immigrant. I liked it, but it was way too long and I ended up skimming pretty liberally.

Leelee.reads What don't you like about it? Curious! 7y
WanderingBookaneer @Leelee.reads : It's too didactic. I wish she could make the points she wants to make about how immigration laws affect families and kids by weaving them into the story and not separating them from it. She just wastes too much time explaining. 7y
Leelee.reads Interesting. I've been trying to diversify my classroom bookshelf so it reflects the demographic of my students, and have had a hard time finding books that are both high quality and highly relevant. Had high hopes for this one! Sounds like she would lose her audience with the way she wrote it. Bummer. 7y

Wanted to read about how others immigrants felt moving to a new country. As for this author - her writing is much closer to heart as the main character left her home country (my home country too) the same age as I was.

This quote - never heard it before I read this book yet that's how I've always felt growing up.

WanderingBookaneer What did you think of the book? As a daughter of an immigrant I was hoping to like it more. I'm finding it too YA, which is rare for me because I love YA. 7y
kimchi_hannah @WanderingBookaneer hey! I loved it. I'm sure it was only because I was so close to her age when she moved. And I was able to relate to her very well. Just what her parents excepted of her was how I felt too. Plus they're religious too. I'm sorry you're not liking it. 7y

WanderingBookaneer Glad to read this 'cause I'm ready to bail. 7y
TheBookAddict @WanderingBookaneer yeah it was a tough one in the beginning. It's was 250 pages of "why me" and "Royce is so amazing." I felt so bad for hating it, I wanted to like it so bad. It could have definitely been 200 pages shorter. (edited) 7y

Oh-my-gosh...I have to be honest, the 1st 250 pages have been rough. Jasmine is presented as a strong and resilient go-getter, so it's quite disappointing and frustrating when the 1st half of the book is spent on redundant thoughts, whining, and worshiping Royce. I know that finding out that your undocumented is not something that's easy to handle, but she just decided to adopt the stupid "YOLO" mantra and forget about her dreams. Frustrating...?

WanderingBookaneer I'm not a fan on how she is presenting the struggles faced by immigrants. I know the book is YA, but she treats the readers as if they were stupid. She feels the needs to spell everything out and it is driving me crazy. 7y
TheBookAddict @WanderingBookaneer yeah, I know what you mean. And it's like she has to beat the reader on the head with the same thing over and over again for the reader to understand. It was so redundant that it was mind numbing. I was definitely disappointed by this one. 7y

Here's my full Texas Book Festival haul! I kept it down to 5 books, so I'm very proud of myself. It's hard to go to a book festival and not buy a few books, but after my huge October haul, I was a bit hesitant because I already have so many. Right now, I'm set for the next 3-6 months. I do NOT need new books. 😂 No more hauls for me, I promise.

this is such an important story & so relevant with today's political climate and attitude towards immigrants, all I can say is that we need more stories like this one. it's not perfect, but I loved how this book dealt with Jasmine finding out that she is undocumented & her family's struggle with finding a path to citizenship, and these issues really made the book for me. also I absolutely loved the quotes at the beginning of every chapter 📚

WanderingBookaneer I'm just finding it too didactic. I wish the author could have woven some issues onto the characters lives instead of pontificating about it using monologues. 7y

I won this book via a GoodReads Giveaway! I thought this book was awesome! It brought light personally to make me wonder how many of my friends went through the same situation in my highschool and I had no idea. It honestly makes me feel sad that people I know couldve been going through this and I had no idea! This would be great for any girl in highschool. There's a little love story of course as well! ❤️
