Arcadia
Arcadia | Tom Stoppard
Characters: 8 male, 4 female Unit set. This play moves back and forth between 1809 and the present at the elegant estate owned by the Coverly family. The 1809 scenes reveal a household in transition. As the Arcadian landscape is being transformed into picturesque Gothic gardens, complete with a hermitage, thirteen year old Lady Thomasina and her tutor delve into intellectual and romantic issues. Present day scenes depict the Coverly descendants and two competing scholars who are researching a possible scandal at the estate in 1809 involving Lord Byron. This brilliant play moves smoothly between the centuries and explores the nature of truth and time, the difference between classical and romantic temperaments, and the disruptive influence of sex on our life orbits the attraction Newton left out. "Pure entertainment for the heart, mind, soul.... The best Broadway play for many, many a season. It is a work shot through with fun, passion and, yes, genius." N.Y. Post. "Stoppard's richest, most ravishing comedy to date, a play of wit, intellect, language, brio and ... emotion. It's like a dream of levitation: you're instantaneously aloft, soaring, banking, doing loop the loops.... The playwright is a daredevil pilot who's steady at the controls." N.Y. Times. "Full of complex ideas and pleasures one expects from this master of dramatic composition." Time Out. "A dazzling exposition of epigrammatic wit." Daily Express. We shed as we pick up, like travellers who must carry everything in their arms, and what we let fall will be picked up by those behind. The procession is very long and life is very short. We die on the march. But there is nothing outside the march so nothing can be lost to it.

Initial picks for #LitsyAtoZ! Mostly by title, but a few by the author's last name (Doyle, Joyce, Vonnegut, Zelitch). Nearly all of these are books I already own (I haven't read any of them except for Great Expectations, which I only kinda-sorta read in college, so it deserves a focused re-read!), and several are books that I have been meaning to read for years and years (and years). A perfect way to make a dent in that TBR! ❤️📚 #abecedarianTBR

Donna_sBookMinute Great post. Good way for me to identify books that are on my list as well. "X" by Ilyasah Shabazz and "The Underground Railroad" seem to be the only ones. But I'm not sure I can wait 'til January for "X." 7y
KarenUK Nice list! 💕👍 7y

We're better at predicting events at the edge of the galaxy or inside the nucleus of an atom than whether it'll rain on auntie's garden party three Sundays from now.

This has been kind of a rough week - my depression and productivity has oscillated wildly, and it's been ten days since I did any serious reading. So I valued the chance to go into my books of #favequotes for today's #SomethingforSept . The Trainspotting is one I go to often. The Stoppard is one I encountered again today, and found myself profoundly moved by again. These helped.

SharonGoforth Hope you are feeling better 😊 8y

Having screenshotted my post on Pears's Arcadia, I can now screenshot that screenshot to reference Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, which is about recursive functions, like a screenshot of a screenshot.

Haven't read Lauren Groff's Arcadia, or I could maybe go one more level.

My favorite play of all time. Arcadia blends academic competition, gardening, entropy, and lust. What more could one want?

I want to punch Bernard in the face, but otherwise I like all the characters. It's relatively straightforward, compared to some of his other plays, but it deals with lots of weighty subjects, and features a great deal of witty, sparkling dialogue. Also, it's a play, so it's a fast read...

OTD in 1822, polymath Charles Babbage first proposed the idea of the "difference engine," an early step in the computer age. Babbage is also a key figure in steampunk - and his colleague Ada Lovelace was the inspiration for Arcadia, Tom Stoppard's masterpiece (top). Arcadia is so freaking good guys!

acg Acardia's one of my favorite plays! It introduced me to Stoppard. 8y
brendanmleonard @seekingthespheres I think Arcadia and Long Day's Journey are tied for my all time favorite. Maybe Translations too 😃 8y
Chessa Have you read The Thrilling Adventures of Lovelace and Babbage? It's really fun! Though it does win the distinction of having footnotes that had endnotes that seriously had more footnotes. But definitely an entertaining and educational read! 8y

SusanInTiburon Eight years ago I saw a real live difference engine on display in Silicon Valley. My kids were a little underwhelmed but, oh, it was a beautiful thing. 8y
brendanmleonard @Susanintiburon I went to an exhibit last fall about early computers in the 1930s. I felt the same way. 8y
GuiltyFeat I saw the original Trevor Nunn production at the Theatre Royal in London in July 1994. Loved it. 8y
Caryl Oh, I want to see Arcadia on stage! Lucky you, @GuiltyFeat . A friend encouraged me to read this play about ten years ago, and I'm so glad she did! It's beautiful. 8y
