Great Gatsby | F Scott Fitzgerald
post image

My first post as a Book Riot contributor is up on their site: http://bookriot.com/2017/05/01/thank-english-teacher/ I'm incredibly excited about it. I talk about The Great Gatsby, being a smart ass, and teaching English. 😍 I'd love it if my lovely littens read it. Tell me what you think.

Bookish_Predator @BeckyRenner I've just read your post and loved it! I didn't go to school much so missed all the books for English classes so I know I've missed out on so many wonderful books and the discussions that go with them. Have always been a reader though and now may be the time to start some classics, thanks to you. 😊 3y
BeckyRenner @Bookish_Predator it's never too late for books! 😊 3y
Bookish_Predator @BeckyRenner that is so very true! Where do you suggest I start? 😁 3y
See All 10 Comments
BeckyRenner @Bookish_Predator it depends on what you like. I love Gatsby, but I'd also want to read more books/classics by women. I love flannery O'Connor, and To Kill a Mockingbird is a perennial favorite. 3y
Bookish_Predator @BeckyRenner I'm a big fan of horror, mysteries and thrillers, basically lots of deaths and whodunnit? So maybe I should start with classics that include that and work my way further when I've read some of those. 3y
BeckyRenner @Bookish_Predator Read Frankenstein! 3y
Bookish_Predator @BeckyRenner I have that as a bind up with Dracula. Oohh, I'll be picking that up when I get home tomorrow then. ☺️ 3y

Hello all! Sorry I've been dormant. I'm exhausted from grad school, teaching, and trying desperately to finish my novel. I'm also running some chats and things for Dewey's 24-Hour Readathon later this month. But NOT YET! This weekend, I'm chaperoning prom, going to an RWA meeting, aaand to my cousin's baby shower. When will I have time to read?

Zelma It seems like we're all super busy right now! Maybe read in the car? 3y
BeckyRenner @Zelma While I'm driving? 😳 3y
Zelma @BeckyRenner ok, maybe not then! 😳 hmm, audio books? 3y

8little_paws @BeckyRenner you know what I do know what I last watched: the new Gilmore Girls, Thanksgiving weekend. And I was ultimately so disappointed in it I've had no taste to watch anything since then. I was like, that was a waste of 6 hours! 3y
BeckyRenner @8little_paws I haven't watched it yet. I don't know if I can bring myself to do it. 3y
8little_paws @BeckyRenner a lot of people really liked it. I thought there was a lot of tactless humor and plot lines (ex: Rory and Lorelei making fun of a fat person, a weird plot line with one of Emily's maids) plus it's clear it was meant to be ten years prior and they just recycled the plot lines. And the ending had me 😤😬🙅 3y

Bakingbookworm @BeckyRenner It's great when you click with the author and the book. I remember thinking, back in May, that it sounded like a great read. I had to reread the synopsis to refresh my memory but I still had that initial feeling 3y
BeckyRenner @Bakingbookworm Some of the promotional materials don't exactly match with the content, so be aware. It's definitely not a YA novel. And it has a few deliberately unlikable characters. But she writes teachers and teenagers so well! I'm a high school English teacher, and I was beyond convinced! 3y

Still loving this book, littens. But I do have a question: does anyone know why all the chapter titles start with A's? #botm

8little_paws I do! I wrote the author an email and he wrote me back! Let me find it and copy and paste the answer. 3y
8little_paws Here you go:
Now, as to the A's in the chapter headings. Early in the drafting of the novel, I had the instinct that I should follow this rule, and I trusted my instinct. In retrospect, I think I wanted to signal to the readers that while AGIM takes place in a dark era for Russia, that the book has an element of play and a touch of magic about it.

#aclassicihaventread is Don Quixote. It's one of my goals next in 2017. 2017 is to be my #YearofLAN aka my year of long-ass novels. 🤓🙃😋 #seasonsreadings2016

My IRL book club is reading this. #botm Don't know what I think yet. I have a thing for Russian nobility. War and Peace is one of my faves. But I'm not that far into this yet.

itsbrb Oh I hope you love it! I'm still thinking about it after I read it. Actually picked his second book for my book club next year because of how much I enjoyed the writing in this one. 3y
Bookish_B I loved it. Took me a minute to get into it but once I did, I was all in! It's one of my favorites of the year. 3y

LLindsey I started it, but had set it aside because I just didn't have the time to devote to the magnificent novel. What I did read very much reminded me of (and made me want to reread) Anna Karenina in tone. 3y

I made a goodreads list for my #LitsyAtoZ Challenge. Knowing me, I will read completely different books than I said I would. Also, I can't seem to choose between some of them, hence to two Ys. Any of you littens participating? What do your lists look like? The rest of mine is here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/list/7298629-rebecca-renner?shelf=litsyatoz-rea...

CocoReads I started a list on paper but then I abandoned it because I always wind up changing my mind. 3y
Theresa You're doing Infinite Jest?? I bow to you! 👏👏👏 I struggle with DFW. I bailed on one of his short story collections, but I'm reading this now & finding it strangely enjoyable. 3y
Handmade_Redhead I don't pre-pick my books. I read books organically and start filling in purposely in the fall. 3y

angrylilasian Great idea! I change my mind all the time too but this is a great way to start. Stealing your idea. 😄 3y
BookishMarginalia Great #abecedarianTBR idea! @CocoReads So do I! @theresa I've never even attempted Infinite Jest! (edited) 3y
kim.guernsey I made a goodreads list too! 3y
Loreen I do this with all my challenges. It makes it easy to keep track of my plans. 3y
sprainedbrain 🙋🏻 I usually have a shelf for each of my challenges tbr, and then another shelf for the books I have read for that challenge. I move them as I finish them because I am a nerd. 🤓 3y
Daisey I usually make Goodreads shelves for my year long challenges, but only add books once reading or completed. I also have a private Goodreads group where I keep specific lists for each challenge with tasks, possible books, and completed books. Those lists of possible books are always changing! 3y
BeckyRenner @CocoReads I end up changing my mind, too. But I think this will be more of a suggestion list. 3y
BeckyRenner @Theresa Next year is going to be my year of long books. I want to read Don Quijote and Moby Dick, too. 3y
BeckyRenner @Handmade_Redhead I tried to do that with the Book Riot Challenge. And here I am: it's December and I'm 5 books behind! 😬 3y
BeckyRenner @angrylilasian Link me to your list! 3y
BeckyRenner @BookishMarginalia It's been sitting on my shelf for a year. It's about time I give it a whirl. 3y
BeckyRenner @AReaderWhoMoms Send me the link! I want to know what you're reading. 3y
BeckyRenner @sprainedbrain I should have a books I planned to read shelf and a books I actually read shelf. Lol 3y
CocoReads A suggestion list is a good idea. I may wind up working on mine more as I get time to research. Because, honestly, the research is half the fun. 3y
BookishMarginalia I just wing my reads 😜🤓 3y

I've been so busy with the school year starting. So I've been doing the audiobook thing. This is good book that describes an important civil rights case with clarity. The most profound thing to me though is that it's set where I live. I'm finding that it's easy to forget that injustice has happened (and in many places continues) in very familiar places.

brendanmleonard I need to read this - excited about the movie! 3y
akfreeborn I read this book a couple of years ago. I live in Florida and the history is so recent. I found the injustices alarming. I think of this book often especially when driving in and around Sumter, Lake and other inland counties. 3y
BeckyRenner @akfreeborn One of the murders I just read about happened on a road I have driven all of my life. When I heard that part, I stopped what I was doing, and I was like, Wait. What? It's a good illustration of privilege, that I haven't had to think about these things before. 🙁 3y
See All 7 Comments
BeckyRenner @brendanmleonard It's going to be a movie?! I didn't know! 3y
brendanmleonard @BeckyRenner I think it is! I may be getting it confused with other Thurgood Marshall projects. 3y
akfreeborn @BeckyRenner I can feel for you. This is not a part of history I learned much about in school and I'm sure you had no idea either even though it's where you live. My kids visit their dad in that area and I always think of the description of "the crime" and all the people that likely just went "missing" in that area. Gives me chills and I hope things are much different now. 3y
Jennifer3 I read this a couple years ago myself. Mr. Marshall and those trying to shed light on the injustices of their time sure had a lot of courage and tenacity. There were so many parts of that book that were never discussed in history classes. Phenomenal look into our history and social issues which are still occurring today but in different ways. 😞 3y
