Maisie Dobbs (Anniversary)
Maisie Dobbs (Anniversary) | Jacqueline Winspear
10th Anniversary Edition with a special Afterword by the author Maisie Dobbs got her start as a maid in an aristocratic London household when she was thirteen. Her employer, suffragette Lady Rowan Compton, soon became her patron, taking the remarkably bright youngster under her wing. Lady Rowan's friend, Maurice Blanche, often retained as an investigator by the European elite, recognized Maisie s intuitive gifts and helped her earn admission to the prestigious Girton College in Cambridge, where Maisie planned to complete her education. The outbreak of war changed everything. Maisie trained as a nurse, then left for France to serve at the Front, where she found and lost an important part of herself. Ten years after the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie sets out on her own as a private investigator, one who has learned that coincidences are meaningful, and truth elusive. Her very first case involves suspected infidelity but reveals something very different. In the aftermath of the Great War, a former officer has founded a working farm known as The Retreat, that acts as a convalescent refuge for ex-soldiers too shattered to resume normal life. When Fate brings Maisie a second case involving The Retreat, she must finally confront the ghost that has haunted her for over a decade."

This book has moved up on my TBR list. Although I read it quite a few years ago, as well as most of the rest of the series, I think it's time that I revisited this one as I enjoyed it. I was gifted this book by @Amanda61 as part of a Litsy book swap a few months ago.

Maisie is a detective who was also a nurse in WW1. This first book in the series explains how she became both. It had both suspenseful and heartwarming parts, and Maisie is a likeable character, but it didn‘t really pull my interest in until near the end. I liked how the mystery was resolved; it was a light but solid mystery, but I‘m not sure at this point that I will read more of the series.

Triptych for the #TriptychBuddyRead • Lie To Me for my book club this week • The Winter Sea because it‘s overdue at the library • Maisie Dobbs because I wanted to read a cozy mystery (although I‘m not sure it is?)

Anybody read any of these? 🙋🏻‍♀️

Lots of mixed reviews on here but I loved this one. Nice to find a new series to get into. Maisie, who was a nurse during WWI, has a special intuition about people and uses it to conduct investigations and heal psyches. Her relationship with her father is beautiful and the her personal war time story brought me to tears.

It was okay.
A little too superficial, gumshoey, plucky heroine is calm in a crisis.
But happy to finally know what this series is all about. Probably won‘t be reading more, unless they get more interesting- any advice?

Lcsmcat They make good audiobooks for commuting - interesting enough to hold the attention but not so engrossing that you cause accidents. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4w
Samplergal Lightweight. But still ok for a little reprieve from heavier books. I just read this and enjoyed it that it was a strong, smart, feminist MC. 4w

A lot to recommend this one but it didn‘t quite work for me. A cozy with no humour and not enough of a mystery to keep me guessing. Perhaps Maisie needed a kitten to demand her attention when she took herself too seriously?

Overall, I found this predictable and, at times, boring. I mean, the parts about her in the war were interesting, but I really wish all that backstory was weaved in better instead of just dumped for several chapters. Also, I hate when mysteries have a whole chapter where the protagonist explains the how and why of everything.. makes me think the author thinks the reader is too dumb to figure it out themselves 🤷‍♀️

UnidragonFrag Also, found how easily it seemed Maisie got people to spill their guts unrealistic. And the singing.. guys, I listened to this and the person reading it sung and it was not good 😰 2mo

This series will definitely be a library series from here on out. I enjoyed the book just fine but have no real sense of urgency to go pick up the next one. I found the whole premise of how Maisie got so deeply involved in the story to be unrealistic but I appreciated the pay off.

Maisie and I got off to a slow start. For a while I was wondering whether or not I was reading the first in the series...I appreciated greatly the jump back in time for her full story. From there, I was enthralled and didn‘t want to put the book down. I haven‘t read much WWI-based fiction...I found myself thinking about Downton Abbey, too. Anyone else?? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

I have a long story behind my expectations for this book/series (with which I will not bore you). Long story short, I shouldn't be surprised that I was a little disappointed. It's a stretch to call this a mystery. The time line is weird. The author has Maisie tilt her head to encourage companions to spill their guts to her way too often. These are the irritants just off the top of my (untilted) head. I didn't hate it, but I can't recommend it.

Amie I love historical mysteries so I thought that I would love this book, but I've tried to read it twice and couldn't finish it either time. 6mo

I picked up these two books from the library this morning. I read A Man Callef Ove last year, but I need to reread it for book club. I bought one of the Maisie Dobbs books at a book sale, but then I heard that you should read them in order, so I got the first one.

rretzler Maisie Dobbs is one of my favorite series. The first couple of books are a little different in tone than the rest of the series, so if you enjoy them right away, fantastic! But if you‘re on the fence for some reason, don‘t give up - the series is worth it. I have a couple of friends who felt that way, but kept reading and now love the series. Happy reading😀 6mo

This was my choice for Female Detective for #Booked2019 - it‘s not your typical mystery/ detective story.

The first part of the book Maisie sets up her detective agency and she solves a case. It then jumps to Maisie‘s beginning when she first becomes associated with Lady Rowan and her history in WWI. Then it combines everything with the bigger mystery at play.

It was mostly historical fiction, I wouldn‘t call it a mystery. But the end 😭💔

sprainedbrain I‘m reading this now for the same prompt. 😃 7mo

The first in the series of an extraordinaire female PI set in 1920s London. The mystery was not-much-of-a-mystery, and Maisie felt a touch too perfect. I did like the premise and setting; the author‘s ability to convey the aftermath of war and the effect on the men who fought in the war; the use of psychology in solving mystery..most of all I liked the backstory of Maisie‘s childhood and her work as a nurse on the front during the war. 👇

A very well written mystery set post WWI. Winspear‘s compassion for those who suffered physical, emotional, and mental injuries in WWI is almost unsettling in its intensity. In this first book, there is a large flashback to Maisie‘s youth and then her time spent nursing on the frontlines. I didn‘t enjoy the flashback section as much but it was interesting.

minkyb Maisie is a great character. Sweet that you scored the first in the series! 12mo
ravenlee I got my mom hooked on Maisie Dobbs (she‘s the mystery reader, not me, but anytime I find a good-looking series I send it her way. I‘m directly responsible for at least four series she can‘t do without). 12mo
shanaqui I didn't love the first Maisie book, but I hear they get really addictive! 12mo
Andrew65 I love the Maisie Dobbs series, and this was a great introduction. Also love The Historian. 11mo

One of my favourite female detectives #🕵️‍♀️would have to be Maisie Dobbs. Great books that give you a real feel for the years between the two World Wars, as well as having cracking mysteries and a great character.
